@curiositycat333 – I think, but am not 100% certain, that when our guidance dept pushes through the updated acceptance history during the summer after graduation, that the full four year GPA is plotted on the scattergram. When I have viewed the scattergrams as my son progressed through HS, his then current GPA was used for the plotting.
Our school does not update Naviance until after graduation, but I recall someone on this thread mentioning that rolling admits throughout Sr year are posted. In that case, I don’t know if the school would update Naviance after the end of 12th grade.
I have been watching Naviance since the summer before the now college Jr started Jr year of HS. Actually, we can log in as guests, so I had looked at it before then, but more useful to have applicant’s stats plotted on the scattergram.
@CT1417 What I really wish Naviance had was more than just our H.S.'s stats. Maybe those from our district (only a handful of H.S.'s) perhaps an option. Some of the schools DS is considering doesn’t have enough information because not enough student applied.
I’m fairly certain that at our school the stats for acceptances/rejects are inputed by the STUDENTS themselves. So unless they student themselves inputs the college decision mid year it won’t show up. The school bribes the kids to enter than information by the End of May.
THE GPA, SAT is clearly inputed by the school. S17’s GPA was only just updated from last year in the past week. Don’t know when they updated those from the graduating seniors though. Still need to email them about the fact that S17’s SAT is inputed wrong. (In the wrong field… it’s a new SAT out of 1600 in a pre-March SAT out of 2400 field.) It’s not a huge deal in that I can plot points myself just fine, but if their data is going to be correct it needs to be inputed right.
Last day before school here…D is having fun being lazy, had brunch with her friends…, while DS20 has a 1.5 hour soccer practice!!
I just realized that I am only scratching the surface on the college application process --DH and I came US for graduate schools. How and where and when do we need to submit the financial forms? It is not from CA, right? If we know that D is not eligible for financial aid, do we still need to fill out the forms? The other outside process is requesting scores…that is from CB, right? D took SAT and SAT subjects only. We will have to track the score sending ourselves, right? Transcripts and recommendations are from Naviance, I believe D told me. I just feel like that I am missing something and don’t have a handle on the whole process. Hopefully I will be a pro by the time DS 20 goes to college!
@SincererLove – I will only attempt to answer one of your question.
You order SAT and subject test scores from CB, but I would not rely on just CB’s word that the scores were sent. Once your D submits her application to a college, she will receive log-in information for the portal to her profile at that school. (I am probably using the wrong terms here–working from memory of three years ago.) Save the log-in IDs as she may need them to learn her admission decision.
Anyway, the portal will list each piece of her application as it is received. I believe the actual scores appear on this profile page, along with other info that I can no longer recall. (LOR, supplemental essay, transcript?)
I believe that FAFSA opens some time in October. Some schools may require completion of FAFSA for merit aid consideration so you may want to investigate before deciding if you need to file FAFSA. Many others on this thread will have more experience than I do on that topic.
@curiositycat333 – I do not know how Naviance will handle the reporting of old and new SAT scores. Our school’s scattergram always had the option of displaying scores as 1600 or 2400, but I don’t know that they will want to mix apples & oranges, but they may have to.
But to your point of entering a new score in the 2400 category…yeah, that one needs to be cleaned up.
@SincererLove - On the Common App, you answer the question about whether or not you are applying for financial aid, merit aid (if available) or both. Many schools want you to fill out the financial aid forms for merit consideration; others don’t.
For financial aid, all schools will require the FAFSA, which you access through http://www.fafsa.ed.gov . Many (most highly selective) schools will require either the CSS Profile (available through the College Board) or, in some rare cases, have their own financial aid forms to fill out.
And yes, you will need to keep track of which schools want which scores and make sure they get them.
Transcripts and letters of rec are handled by the school through Naviance (if they use it).
I would like to make a HUGE announcement (probably pertinent and appreciated only by other IB parents):
The Extended Essay made its final arrival at our house today at 1pm CST after approximately 20 -30 hrs of hard core (i.e. No Netflix breaks, no social media breaks—nada) and unmedicated labor (although I, the grandma do actually admit to resorting to hard liquor during the process!) and at least three weeks of false labor.
The EE is weighing in at approximately 18-22 pages and is already noted to be engaging and interesting and most importantly… Does not simply re-tell the story of the literature being analyzed!
The proud mom will be sending her baby off electronically and after a brief Netflix break will attempt to catch up on all of the other baby projects that need her attention.
@CT1417 I think I have blocked out a lot of the process from last time around with S15. How does the student get the portal login? Is it listed somewhere on the Common Application or is the information sent directly from the college? How soon after the application is submitted does the student get the login to the college’s portal?
S17 has submitted his ED application. According to the Dashboard on the CA, the school has downloaded the application and the writing supplement. I had him go through his emails, and he has not received any communication from the college and I don’t see anywhere on the CA that has portal information.
@shuttlebus – when my son applied three years ago, he received emails from the various colleges acknowledging the submission of his application. AFAIK, CA was not involved in this process at all; email invitation to log in came from college. My son’s years was the CA debacle where it was VERY important to track everything b/c CA was a disaster in the EA/ED round. Almost every college extended their early deadlines by one week.
Timing varied from almost immediate to many days, but again, this was the CA debacle year. How long ago did you son submit his ED app? CC was filled with posts from students worried that they had missed the app deadline b/c they had not heard from colleges for several days.
Still no essay in this house. That first deadline of Oct 15th looms…
@VickiSoCal that’s hysterical actually. @hyppymom on the whole I think Oregon, and Washington’s hippy ratio is relatively low. Liberal, yes. Hipster in spots though that is quite different than hippy. But true hippy? Not so much. And this is coming from someone whose S17’s band just played at Hemp Fest.
@eandesmom I has requested a non-smoking, non-drinking roommate! We made an amicable swap with the girls across the hall the same day and everyone lived happly ever after.
@VickiSoCal oh my, glad you were able to work that one out. It’s nice that so many schools these days have substance free floors or dorms for those that want it.
