@Tgirlfriend we visited and liked OU as well, and in the end the decision for her was between UA and OU, and she chose UA because it was closer to home. Yes there were some tax implications this year for the scholarship that DD has at UA. I don’t remember all the details and I don’t do the taxes in our house, but it if you search the Alabama threads from early this year, you will find some info there.
@tgirlfriend - Have you looked at Auburn? I think NM scholarship is tuition plus 1 year housing. They are supposed to have a good band. Some of DS13’s friends went there for engineering instead of GT and are in the band.
Congrats on all those acceptances! <:-P <:-P
Still working on essays. She has great potential but still lots of editing. I’m hoping she will be able to hit send in a couple of weeks.
No apps officially complete yet. Probably won’t submit to the end of the month. I suppose it makes sense to wait till D is officially named NMSF. No wink/wink, nudge/nudge from the school yet.
In theory, it will be public in 8 days? At this rate I will be asking you for third party sites where I find out if she made it.
Just my neuroses getting the best of me…
Looks like S is about ready to submit the ASU application. He just needs his social security #, which means he needs me because He doesn’t know it (yet). The first app may be in tonight!! ^:)^
So D is finally working on the Ole Miss app. So frustrating!
Silly fill in the boxes. All of her classes fit the description for “advanced” classes. It looks so weird with “none” in the boxes for English/math/science/social studies :))
Silly drop down major choice that does not contain her potential major (!!)–she sent an email to Croft asking what the heck.
So exciting for all of these kids who are getting apps done and sent. S is getting closer, but will probably not be ready for another few weeks, at least.
It seems that the hyppyposts are to be no more.
Something about being banned. Now we’ll never know what happened on the rest of the tour.
Ok, so I need some advice here. D18 (I know, wrong year but D17 and D18 are kinda a package deal in terms of making me crazy). D18’s bf, a really bright kid who is taking several AP classes this year as a junior, isn’t planning on taking the PSAT.
This has me worrying (surprise surprise), and as I explained it to D18-if she takes the PSAT and does well and has some scholarship options to schools, and he doesn’t take it and doesn’t have those same options, is she going to choose the school he goes to to be with him and give up better opportunities, or is she going to leave him and pick the opportunity. I tried to stress that taking the PSAT does nothing but preserve opportunity, and I think she understood (at least, she made me put another $1 in the I Swear Not To Talk About College jar).
I’m wondering if I should send his mom an email that says hey, did you see all these awesome scholarships if he makes NMF or NMSF? Or is that going way over the line?
I know it’s entirely likely that they’ll break up way before this, but I’m trying to cover all my bases and make sure D18 has as many good choices as possible, plus I’m bummed that he’s not taking the PSAT, because he’s a bright kid.
@Motherofdragons if you have a good relationship with the BF’s mom, I’d send the email. The worse that can happen is she ignores it. In that case, at least you tried.
@MotherOfDragons … Do you ever text the mom? I could see myself spouting out an informative but also casual text
“The PSAT that’s coming up for these kids has some amazing $$ attached! Are y’all excited???”

UA has a very interesting student profile.
Last year, 64.8% of freshman were OOS while 53.7% overall were OOS (page 16).
36% of freshmen scored 30 or above in ACT composite (page 9) for a total over 2500 students.
This is a very competitive and diverse pool.
@MotherOfDragons Maybe the BF (maybe even his Mom) doesn’t know the relationship between NMSF and PSAT. I came to awareness way after D took the test. If she doesn’t know, she would probably appreciate that info.
School starts tomorrow for D17. I am trying to get her to talk to her GC as soon as possible. We need to figure out how the LOR process work at her school (she already asked the teachers last year for LORs). She has completed all CA and supplement essays for her EA schools. But we are not sure if we should submit app first and then ask for LOR and transcripts or follow some other process. Also, I think she should discuss her list with her GC first before start submitting apps. Am I right?
@whataboutcollege – Awesome she has gotten so much done!! In our school students meet with GCs to discuss app process, including timing and LoRs and the list of colleges they are considering. They also consider info on Naviance - do you have that??
We also got the Rice fee waiver email which D was really happy about. Rice is one of her top choices although we’d definitely need a lot of aid. If she isn’t completely burned out by December, she’ll probably apply.
Meanwhile, she has turned in all the necessary information to the teachers who are writing her rec letters, so everything is handled on that front. Now the big thing is just the essays which are quite challenging.
We don’t have Naviance and I have no idea how lor’s are actually submitted.
@ca1543 We do have Naviance and it has become my best friend already :)). We met with her GC a couple of times during Junior year so she does have a sense of what D is looking for. But in a public HS where one GC manages tons of kids, it is not easy to keep her up-to-speed on all the details. There are also scholarships that need school nominations. We do want to make sure D is being considered for those. However D is 150% in her Field Hockey mode right now, especially since she made captain this year. Plus she still plans to work Fri/Sat/Sun nights after school starts, where do we find time for anything else??? So I had to nag her to talk to her GC asap so we can get her EAs all submitted… And she is ignoring me so far…
@whataboutcollege – I totally hear you - feel the same but our DS’s GC has about 150 kids (40 seniors or so) on her watch at our school --a lot but can be responsive to emails sometimes. I might suggest given your D’s intense focus – is to call or arrange a short meeting with GC – just to get clear direction on your top line questions relevant for the short term and to preserve any long term options. Hang in there!!
@MotherOfDragons I have to say I regret not saying something about NMSF to D’s GF’s mom before they took the PSAT. I’m not sure how she does on standardized tests, so maybe it didn’t matter. They seem ok (from limited conversations with S) with applying to totally different schools, thank goodness, but they really don’t have the financial option to going to the same school now that S is eligible for NM scholarships and the GF isn’t. In your case, if you’re in contact with the BF’s mom, I’d mention it casually via email, text, IM or however you usually connect.
Congrats to everyone with a Bama acceptance! S just filled out the first step last week. How long did it take you all to receive the info for the next step? I think I remember seeing something about a CWID (?) that S would get via email so he could apply for scholarships. He says he hasn’t gotten that yet. Does he just need to log back in and apply for scholarships?
I’ve exhausted his patience for this stuff (senior pics tomorrow and all kinds of reminders about LORs, etc.) today, or I’d just have him try it.
