Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@snoozn @STEM2017 and many of us are using this link:

http://profiles.asee.org/

For enrollment, I would recommend looking at the number of Juniors and Seniors. Freshman numbers will not include undecided majors or transfer students. Also, it doesn’t reflect the normal attrition that happens when students decide to switch out of engineering. At some schools, you have to spend your first year as undecided/pre-engineering and then apply to your major. The UC’s tend to accept a lot of transfer students (hence large jumps from sophomore to junior year in enrollment)…

@Gator88NE That’s exactly where I got the data from - thanks! And thank you for the fresh, soph, junior, senior perspective on engineering. I hadn’t thought of that when looking at the numbers.

@longwood I only have a binder right now, known as the binder of destiny (it should be capitalized but I’m on my phone waiting on an oil change and typing is a pita.)

I print out a weekly to do list that’s dated, and every Sunday we go over the list. The ones that don’t get completed move forward to the next week’s list, and the old lists go in the bod.

This seems to work for both of us, she’s happy with it and it allows me to keep it open all week when I’m on the computer and add stuff as I learn more. Sometimes I remove stuff, too.

I’m usually multitasking unless I’m working on art (and then time and the world disappear) so I just slot it in around my other tasks.

@Ynotgo The mit site, she logs in and then gets a picture of the mit beaver with the words, sorry, down for temporary scheduled maintenance. Been like that since Saturday. I’m going to have her log in on a work computer and see if that changes anything. I said maybe it’s a test to weed out the dum dums.

Off topic but you know what is heartbreaking?

Hearing your kids friends talk about college and their application plans. Oh.my.word. I can only do so much without being irritated.

Kids are just now taking tests for the first time (what the heck!!?) and planning to apply to just one school–U of Southern California because they “heard they give good financial aid.” OMW.

Makes me so sad.

“Emphasis on old. 50 years old to be precise.”

@stem2017 - 50??. lol. I’m going to be 55 in November and I don’t consider myself old.

@MotherOfDragons Hmm. I googled the error and can get that page if I go to http://www.mit.edu/admissions/common/MyMITdown.html

Have her try logging in and then going to https://my.mit.edu/uaweb/dashboard.htm

Might need to clear the cache or browser history. Or, try a different browser if she has multiple browsers.

speaking of spreadsheets, I have decided to create one more for LORs with college names, teacher names, research advisors names and figure who needs to send to what college and DS can make separate one for each teacher and give it to them. Some colleges are saying they need 2 but allow upto 4. In that situation do you go for 4 or 3 or depending on how strong you think other 2 are? DS thinks he will get strong letters from 3 teachers but not sure about the 4th one (happens to be English teacher and he supposedly writes good letters).

Is today’s QOTD age of the parents in this group ?

Sorry @MichiganGeorgia Apologies if offended anyone in the 50+ club. I just joined and I’m having a tough time with it.

QOTD: <50 and I’ll leave it at that, lol.

@srk2017 Heck no! I didn’t want to open that can of worms.

Another interesting fun fact: When I graduated high school my parents were 36 year old. Different times.

^^ My parents were late 30’s too when I graduated. They finished college and immediately had me. I can’t imagine me doing that. I can barely parent now, imagine doing that in your early 20’s. I do have 1 friend who got married at 19 and had a kid, our minds were blown. They are still married so I guess it worked. I’m pretty happy I did not marry my girlfriend of the time when I was 19.

Holy cow!!

@MotherOfDragons regarding MIT…make sure your browser supports MIT’s application. I don’t remember any of the details at this point, but I was having trouble 2 years ago with S15 until I realized that the version of the browser I was using was not supported. I switched to one of the browsers that MIT had listed and had no problems after that.

I have no idea if the problem I had is similar to the problem you are having, but thought I would mention it. Good luck to your D on her MIT application. My S spent a ton of time on those essays.

I am an older parent who worked on a career before having kids. My kids could technically be my grandkids! :-S

I am a tad bit younger at 46, but my husband is 56 and acts like he is 20!

QOTD: barely less than 50. My parents were in their early 40’s when I graduated high school.
YQOTD: S17 had 10 colleges on his list and visited them all at the start of junior year.

QOTD: I am buying “L” roman numeral candles soon to reduce the number of candles on DH and my cakes  or go binary candles, 110010, to avoid the arabic number.

At my age, my mom had … one kid in college and 2 kids graduated from colleges … her kids were all married by her 56th birthday …
I’ll be working till 80s paying off college loans. :((

I am all for marrying young and having kids early for DS’s :)) so that I can have a chance to spoil grand kids.

I just want to celebrate little victory steps. S has been waking himself up every day for school, albeit not in time to make a lunch. There is hope that he will be able to get to college classes on time. I really like not being responsible for his mornings.

Scarily close to 60 – turning 59 this month.
