Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@cruisecontrol - Under “Application Staus”,.I see “This application is complete”.

@srk2017 are you logging into the following: https://psmobile.pitt.edu/app/dashboard? I’m not sure if it matters, but it seems I’ve seen two places to log in for status…but this is the one where she saw the ‘Admitted’ status. This is part of the reason for the confusion.

D is done with the Common App! Also submitted UT but that application is so confusing. She made a mistake and needs to get in touch with them tomorrow to correct it. We also couldn’t find Essay topic S. Worse application ever! 1 school to go plus a handful of scholarship supplements.

Congrats on the new acceptances!

@cruisecontrol - yes, mobile site is showing as admitted but not regular site, strange!

@srk2017 OK, then I think we’ll assume “Program Status” means something different than “Application Status” until we hear otherwise. Thanks for looking!

I’m printing out the form D17’s high school requires to get her absences exempted for college visits, and jeez, what a rigamarole! Not only does she have to have ALL SEVEN of her teachers sign it, she has to have the college she’s visiting sign AND NOTARIZE the letter. That’s going to be fun-hey honey, find a notary in Maryland and then one in Virginia while you’re running from college to college. Grrr…

On the upside, I did manage to get the transcripts sent to UA and MIT today  Well, I requested them and paid for them. We’ll see how long it takes for the school to do it. D17 and I spent more time reading through the MIT application-it’s HUGE! The maker portfolio is taking her as long to do as the application, but she’s about done with both.

I need to do some research to see if I need to have D fill out the scholarship request form for UA, or if it’s going to be automatic because of her stats. I may have her do it just to get practice for the ones that she will have to do for some other colleges, and hey, it can’t hurt? (she would probably disagree, lol)

@cruisecontrol, I only wish my daughter was applying to Pitt—I think it would be a good school for her, and if she went there it would give me a chance to occasionally visit Pittsburgh, a woefully underrated city that I adore. Not to be, though…

In application news here, the Honors College short essay for Alabama is in—now to wait for the likely invitation to apply to University Fellows in a couple weeks. The whole multi-stage-do-this-now-then-wait process for her application to all the different parts of Alabama is still really weird at me.

@MotherOfDragons, notarized, seriously? Does she attend one of those military-style boot camp high schools? :))

@snoozn I know! No, it’s a normal-ish large public high school. It’s verging on looking and feeling like a prison because of its (ever increasing) size. Everyone is presumed guilty until proven innocent…

@MotherOfDragons —that is harsh about the absences. Also surprised that they charge for transcripts. I thought everything was sent via Naviance. What is the cost to the school associated with submitting another file electronically? (Other than the guidance secretary’s time in hitting send.)

We checked out the university of alabama huntsville it is very much a computer school for half the students what do people not like about commuter schools

D’s school charges for transcripts. Same price of sending it through Naviance or if sending a paper copy. It’s not that expensive.

@fun1234 , I currently attend a commuter school full time (almost have my BA), and the reason I wouldn’t want it for either of my kids is because the kids who do live on campus complain that none of their friends are on campus with them.

As one of the commuters, I go to class, and I go home. I don’t do any of the on-campus activities (and they have some good ones) because I’m not going to get stuck there after hours. They are trying to change the culture by building more dorms, but most of the kids can’t afford to stay in them, anyway. So there is definitely a no-nonsense-this-is-a-job-not-a-life-experience feeling to the campus.

@MotherOfDragons Write to admissions and ask where there is a notary on campus. Usually, there are several to choose from as faculty often require notarized documents. Departmental office administrators are a good place to start.

My D got her Pitt portal notification and activated and logged in. Her status is Incomplete. Says she needs to pay the App Fee (she got a waiver) and needs a transcript. Do you have to send a transcript for applying? My D’s school won’t accept transcript requests until 10/05.

@MotherOfDragons I did notice when we visited there were a lot of interaction from kids playing card games and other things. They did say 4000 kids lived on campus which is at least half the kids. I would think that would be enough kids to be able to find friends… I know they also had lots of clubs like outdoor club ultimate Frisbee so I am thinking he’d be able to make friends there. I haven’t heard many people talk about that school so I wonder if anyone one on here has any kids that go there and how they like it. It is my son’s safety

@CT1417 it’s $4/transcript, no matter what form it takes. Since 95% of the kids go to college at our school, that’s raking in some serious bucks. This includes colleges on the common app-I can list that the school is on the common app, but I still have to request and pay separately, it appears. I’m going to confirm that through the GC. I tend to over-read and over-think stuff.

Don’t get me started about all the other fees I pay to the school-$40/kid for “engineering fees”, $150 for older D for her sculpture class supplies (clay does not cost that much!), uh, lockers, etc etc ad nauseum. I’m glad my kids don’t play sports anymore-the one year D17 did equestrian we spent over $2k, and we don’t have a horse!

@Dolemite - you can either send a transcript or self report all the courses and grades. You need to have exact descriptions and honors/non-honors classifications.

@MotherOfDragons – Wow!

The only academic fees I know of at our school are for tests (APs, SATs, PSAT–all except the new state-mandated in-school administration of the SAT). Seniors pay $100 for a parking permit, and yearbooks cost close to $100, but those are not academic expenses. A couple of sports have fees associated; squash and ice hockey, I believe, because the teams have to use private facilities. Luckily for me, the school had a reciprocity agreement with the YMCA so I did not have to pay a fee for swim team because pool time would have been expensive. I suppose parents need to steer their children toward sports without fees, if that will be concern. Rowing, ice hockey and squash become expensive.

I did have to pay quite a bit when my son attended the national Quiz Bowl tournament but that seems appropriate as I do not believe that the taxpayers should be paying for my son to travel to Dallas for three days. The sports teams hold car washes to raise funds for extras not covered by the district (coach buses to playoffs, extra tee shirts or team apparel).

@Dolemite … Do the self reported transcript. It will save so much time and will put her in a more solid place for merit consideration.

However, you do almost need an unofficial transcript to make sure the course codes and such are all exact. Will they print an unofficial transcript for you?
