@4beardolls - Thanks for college list preview. I looked at top 10 public schools list and 6 of them are in CA, but it appears lot of kids are going out of state lately.
@Ynotgo - I thought he continued the battled till the victory I don’t think school boards gets persuaded by kids easily. My S thought of lobbying the school board for an issue but figured takes too much time and may not get the desired results. Instead he promoted the nationwide petition for that cause.
@payn4ward thank you so much for that link! I shared it with my husband - who thinks I am doing too much for her and pushing her too much all at the same time He seems to think if she really wanted it she would just take over and we shouldn’t have to be involved at all. I think this will help him understand what is going on a little bit more. The voice of that letter sounded JUST LIKE my kid.
Relieved the ACT is over. She said science was easier (the once she needs most improvement on) but Math was harder. She swore there was some calc in it now. But she probably just forgot the easier way to do it and calc is on her mind right now In any case hopefully worse case is only science will improve and it will help with the schools on her list that superscore. Still have fingers crossed that she improves at least 2 points overall to bring her reaches closer.
DS won 34 inch curved HD monitor in a video card company raffle. Apparently he submitted few surveys about the product so he ended up having lot of entries :-), we have to figure out how to use it. He already has 2 monitors (27 inch and 19 inch) for desktop and one separate monitor for laptop and now he wants to stack desktop monitors! Tech overloaded kid :))
My D also has the in-school SAT in October. At a parent meeting one of the GCs said since the in-school SAT is a district requirement, it can not be waved by the school for any reason. However, there is no makeup provision for the in-school SAT, so if your child does not show up for school that day the test is missed and there is no way it can be made it up.
Very touching ‘letter’ @payn4ward. It’s not quite my kid, except for the sentiment of having too much to do overall. It’s also why I am ‘over-helping’. Any busy work I can take off my daughter’s plate, I don’t mind doing. Especially if it could mean tens of thousands of dollars. I’m not going to say: “Well, if you don’t want to do it, that’s fine”. It’s her choice, but it’s my money. They are not mutually-exclusive.
@stlarenas I feel for you and your daughter. That’s very tough, and it seems you’re doing everything you can. Your daughter will appreciate it.
@nw2this…my S is a NMSF and we visited TAMU this summer. Great school just keep in mind that 3.5 GPA that you have to carry to keep your scholarship.
For those taking the in-school SAT…We had the same issue in CT last March with an in-school administration of the NEW exam three days before the March SAT exam date. A handful of students had taken the SAT early so as to avoid the confusion and timing of the new SAT. Anyone affected was really annoyed as those early test-takers also tend to be the same students who apply to ‘submit all testing history’ schools.
The school came up with a solution that made everyone happy. Students sat for the exam so that the school received credit for state testing percentages, but walked down to guidance and cancelled their scores as soon as they took the test. We were promised that Guidance would eventually receive the score so that students could learn the score, if interested, but that never worked out. The test does not appear in my son’s CB account so the compromise accomplished what we needed.
Perhaps the same can be achieved in your schools? The students had to go to class for the remainder of the school day, so might as well sit through the test, as long as the score was never reported to colleges.
On the US News and World Report rankings, obviously the rankings within the top 25 may have shuffled around somewhat, but it’s all the same schools as the 2016 rankings. One exception, UVA seems to have moved from last year’s 26th ranking into the top 25. But no real major changes.
@dfbdfb University Fellows application is automatic with a 32 ACT. Good luck.
@jeepgirl, I know. I just didn’t expect that quick of a turnaround, given my daughter’s, um, experience with the whole process to this point. Given what @cruisecontrol (I think it was) said, though, the invite was presumably from the general application, not the honors application, and if that’s the case the timing makes a lot more sense.
@dfbdfb I totally forgot about your D’s experience. Do you think your D will attend UA?
Congrats to all the NMSF kids!!
My D’s high school announced NMSF. There are seven. That’s more than past couple of years. One of them is a girl who ignored my D’s questions and opinions and denied her whole existence in the Pre-Calc group table because my D was the weakest in math at the table. I got this mama bear instinct and growling at her smiling photo in the school website!!
We had our family meeting with my DD’s College Counselor this afternoon. My daughter is going to apply to two state schools EA and one, as yet to be determined, REA school. She does not want to ED anywhere. The College Counseling office at her school moves the schools from the thinking about to applying to list on Naviance. I am excited to see the progress on her list. My daughter says that even if she gets accepted by her REA school she will submit RD applications.
@CaucAsianDad They discussed the October SAT in school today. The teachers told the students that did not want to take it to go talk to their counselors. I’ve already told D to go handle it. Neither of us will be happy with any requirement that she take it at all. It’s about the score primarily, but it is also about the fact that she just doesn’t want to take another standardized test right now. And the school cannot require it. So we will not agree for her to sit for it and cancel the score. We’ll see what the counselor says. I feel fairly confident it won’t be a problem. I’d just rather it be resolved without me getting involved.
@jeepgirl, if she had to decide today, she’d probably not. She’s warming up to UA slowly, though. If she doesn’t get something approaching full tuition to one of a couple other schools she’s applying to (e.g., getting a Trustee Scholarship at Mt Holyoke), I think UA is the likely winner.
from PITT thread " I am an impatient millennial, so would it trouble you to tell me how soon like today? Or tomorrow?" :))
Just turned 50 this year and my husband is older I have a home childcare the kids keep me young
@srk2017 That post was classic! :)) But schools still don’t seem to quite have the hang of this electronic admissions process. Over a week later, D is still waiting for formal notification of acceptance to another school, though it shows as admitted on her mystatus page.
