Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Dd’s writing serious essays, too. Common app prompt 4 omg

Essay fatigue is a real thing @Mom2aphysicsgeek I think the remaining private school on D’s list will fall off it, just based on how D has prioritized the essays!

@itsgettingreal17 I’m not even thinking about scholarship weekends. D knows that the biggies are very long shots, though she’s giving the applications her all.

@Ghibelline2017 Ouch! I hate storm damage. We’ve lost a few trees in the past couple years, but they have landed far away from the house. When d17 was a toddler we were without power for 8 days after a tropical storm in early September. She was a cuddler (still is  ); I was miserable and sticky!

I miss @2muchquan I hope he and his family are well

@Ghibelline2017 - I hope you get your power back soon. It is so difficult to provide meals day after day without power. If you have access to dry ice it makes keeping a cooler with things like cold cuts and milk easier.

@WhereIsMyKindle All of the competitive scholarships are long shots for D as well. I’m starting one of those Arya Stark prayers. :)) But just in case, I’d hate to have to choose between scholarship weekend/interview and an expensive trip with no refunds. I
The process should be much shorter.

Wait, did I say my daughter’s essay was not serious? All I said was it was about her relationship with a sandwich. =))

S was working on a part of an application over the weekend, and in the middle of one of the sections (senior year classes, I think), he hit “enter” instead of “tab” to move to the next line. Beware that “enter” will submit the application. :open_mouth:

Fortunately, he got a message that said that his application was not complete, and he was able to get back to where he was.

But I could envision a scenario in which the app was filled out but not proof-read, and it would have been submitted as is. A few years ago, my D15 was super careful in her apps, checking and rechecking about 20 times before she ever submitted anything. S will just tap a key and move on without making sure of what he’s doing. Will have to watch this with him.

Our school profile still has last year’s stuff on it, including two guidance counselors that are no longer there. I’m debating whether to send the secretary of the counselor’s office an email telling them about the address discrepancy re; Alabama.

I checked quan’s page, they haven’t been on since Aug 22. I hope they’re ok. It’s kind of one of those things you have to accept about the internet-people just disappear sometimes. Usually I’ll tell people ‘hey you won’t see a lot of me from now on because I’m doing xyz and it’s eating up my time’ so people don’t worry, but quan may not realize we’re worried about them.

@longwood thanks for the heads up. D17 is also not careful that way and it makes me crazy.

Ooh A fake gift basket for the fake kid. I like that!

@itsgettingreal17, I think the scholarship competitions are held at all different times, usually when whatever college is holding it is NOT on their spring break because they want the kids to see what the campus is like. When D15 did her scholarship comps, they were all at different times from each other. I think that schools that are in the same category (i.e, top 20 LACs) try to hold their events at different times so the overlap kids get a chance to go to both. We are not scheduling any spring break vacation this year (S17s spring break is in March) so we can either visit schools or do the scholarship events.

Couple of local kids we know who wouldn’t qualify for FA accepted full merit scholarships from Duke and Vanderbilt.

Chicago, Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory, WashU and USC, top 25 schools, have various levels of merit scholarships for some lucky students. I am never sure how they pick them but those I know who have received them have always been deserving.

@itsgettingreal17, the whole serious essay prompt thing makes me especially appreciate the setup for Smith’s (short—200 words or less!) essay:

And in honor of @2muchquan, let’s all raise a glass with a JOTD that I ran across when I was an undergrad dealing with the problem of multiple center embedding* in my syntax classes:

  • That is, the fact that you can say The cat the dog chased meowed and The dog the cow kicked barked, but not The cat the dog the cow kicked chased meowed.

By the way, an alternative form of the JOTD, borrowing an idea from the “tell me a story” scene in Scieszka & Smith’s The Stinky Cheese Man:

@dfbdfb is rocking the font sizing! Upping the game here

well done and a very nice tribute

For anybody that applies to Rice University. I was just curious what the essays are since my son still hasn’t started yet. So I plugged in all the dates for the colleges on when the applications are due only 4 had dates before December 15. Plus he wants to apply for Tulane scholarship which makes 5. I guess he would have 4 he could apply to after the early decision date once he finds out the outcome of that. I am thinking he has to do the application first before he sends transcripts. Can the references be done before the application. I just think he’d rather not do all the work if he doesn’t need to. Is that kind of typical kids only do a few and then when they find out submit some more?

I’m sitting in a French class at Wake Forest. I’ll try to post a review tonight. Can’t on my phone.

Rice prompts:

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (150 word limit)

With the understanding that the choice of academic school you indicated is not binding, explain why you are applying to that particular school of study. (150 word limit)

How did you first learn about Rice University, and what motivated you to apply? (250 word limit)

The quality of Rice’s academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What personal perspective would you contribute to life at Rice? (500 word limit)

In keeping with Rice’s long-standing tradition (known as “The Box”), please share an image of something that appeals to you. See the Help Section for more information.

When I pull up Rice University from Maine no one is listed as submitted an application. I guess one kid got in, but they are not listed in naviance. I guess he can’t compare his chances.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Let’s dispense with discussing a user who may no longer be here, please; it’s a little too gossipy for this site. Rest assured that the user in question is alive and well. Several posts deleted.

For anyone even remotely interested in The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, I just took a quick look and there are 9 short answer essays with an optional 10th open ended essay.

Nope

So, not quite a question of the day but for the parents with kids that have already been through this process, do accepted students visits help or just make the kids more confused about their decisions? By the time we get down to decision time, it will have been a year or more since DS17 did his initial visit so some of the details have faded. Any opinions on the accepted student visits?
