Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@srk2017 Good handyman could be useful if he could seem mostly book learning to his teachers and EC coaches.

Ok, Georgia Tech was the only one I thought required the CSS – I was just going to utilize it for Princeton since I was doing it anyway – but then I found this:

https://www.finaid.gatech.edu/incoming-freshman

Can someone double-check me? If I’m reading it correctly, they only require CSS for need-based financial aid. D2 won’t qualify for anything but merit aid. They mention a couple of merit scholarships in particular that are exempt from needing CSS, but I think it applies across the board to merit aid…?

@STEM2017 I know you’ve provided that list before, but I still find it helpful. But what the heck do they expect you to say for #8?

Seems like the standard interview question that leads to answers such as “I tend to work too hard.” Is this where you talk about the weeks’ worth of dirty socks laying around the bedroom, the inability to look an adult in the eye or the failure to grasp the meaning of present participles? I don’t see the point of it for a brag sheet.

My son’s answer to “What’s your greatest weakness?”

@IABooks – you’re right, I would just skip that question. What’s the advantage to answering?

That looks like a great school to go to. It actually reminds a little of my Dad’s description of Brooklyn Tech (high school, for those who don’t know). No one in his family had ever gone to college, and he went to BT with the idea of being an electronics technician. But thanks to their STEM-focused hands-on program, he decided to go to college and be an engineer. (I’m happy to say he’s still an engineer at heart – forever tinkering with his ham radio, learning obscure software and building gadgets). I’m pretty sure the school was 100% male in Dad’s day, but hopefully not anymore. I love that your S’s school is 50/50 – wonderful!

@Ynotgo Wow, what a unique high school program! I think one of my kids would really like that.

Grades are not getting off to a good start. 3 IB HL classes is hitting like a freight train.

Deep breaths.

I know these have very little weight and will improve after the first quiz, but S17 turned in homework leaving much to be desired, 40% or 50%. Anything below 60% is Fail so he has amassed 2 Fs and 1 C last time I checked his grades on Infinite Campus. :-& ~X(
No more checking grades. [-( :))

I will wait one more week to check grades and they will get better.

@VickiSoCal - We are on same boat. 3 IB HL, EE and essays, school spirit etc…

Yes, it was spirit week this week. Tomorrow night is the “big game”

I just went from my biggest worry being she won’t get in to the college of her choice to it being she won’t graduate high school!

I’m definitely not checking grades! I’m tempted though! No senioritis until after all admissions decision are in :))

Georgia Tech and UNC-CH and the like–
Merit at schools like these requires more than high stats, right? A student would need hundreds of hours of community service and multiple leadership positions, correct?

S too. There are so few assignments that the one F (forgot to do it, forgot to bring in the notebook, etc.) totally skews the GPA. I shouldn’t look until at least 4 weeks have been completed.

Apparently teachers notice scool spirit active participation like float design.

I can’t keep up very well. I’m back on page 1053. I didn’t get to fill out a brag sheet for S, but the GC asked the kids to fill it out for themselves. I never saw it before he turned it in.

No word from the school on anything national merit related, although I’m pretty sure he could be commended. When do they tell you this? Also, we’re still waiting on transcripts.

and @STEM2017 that’s awesome on your son’s new position. Such an honor, and well-deserved, I am sure. Be proud. The kiddos of this year’s senior class were all in pre-school back in 2000. Wow, it’s amazing to think that far back.

Essay progress- The essay prompts are printed out and have made it into the Binder of Destiny for each school. Common app essay and one supplement is almost done.

@nw2this – yes, the merit is very competitive at those schools. Our D2 doesn’t expect it, but wants to try.

Sorry to be a pest, but if anyone could look back at comment #15805 and check my understanding of Georgia Tech merit aid not requiring the CSS profile, I’d be grateful.

@NerdMom88 That was my understanding, also, but I will check too.

According to the GA Tech website, the application deadline to be considered for merit is 10/15, and the FAFSA and CSS profile are due Jan 31.

Yes, the date for the forms are quite a bit after the EA deadline. However, I think what they are saying is that FAFSA must be submitted for all aid applicants, but the CSS Profile is only for need. I think maybe I’ll just call the Financial Aid office next week to be sure.
