Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@Tgirlfriend my heart is broken for all of you.

@Tgirlfriend There are just no words. The second tragedy on this forum in just a couple of days. It’s truly heartbreaking.

Let’s all hug and kiss our kids and also, as they approach their 18th birthdays, make sure to have medical POA for your kids so you can make medical decisions for your child God forbid you should ever need to.

Can teachers customize LORs for different colleges on common app?

There has been much heaviness, so in a desperate attempt to elicit a smile:

A ham sandwich walks into a bar. The bartender says “Sorry, we don’t serve food here.”

It seems that the first batch of September ACT scores is out. Good luck to those who took it! :)>-

DS got another 32… oh well, he didn’t study so I guess it shows that he is consistent.

@Tgirlfriend How awful. Big hugs… I can’t imagine. That is so very tragic. Think I’m going to go embarrass my son and give him a big hug.

@thermom Our school shows both unweighted & weighted. (But unfortunately not UC which would be useful in our case.) And there is an annoying bug where it comes up with ‘unweighted’ pop selected but displayed the weighted grades.

I believe you are correct and the grades you are comparing against are end of senior grades. They certainly are in our school. I also believe end of senior year grades are in the stats universities often publish for their incoming freshman year. But keep in mind while some students grade will rise, others might fall senior year. Particularly second semester.

@Tgirlfriend that is absolutely heartbreaking. I cannot imagine what the family is going through and the poor surviving twin. We’ve had some summer tragedies locally though none in our school district, it just all hits so close to home.

We are a little bit happy at our house…D17 got her ACT scores and she got a 33. She finally studied, not the way that I wanted, but enough to get the scores she needed:)

@youcee D’s school does not calculate an unweighted GPA. But we can change graphs in Naviance between different standardized tests.

@srk2017

I don’t believe so. I think each LOR is plugged into whichever applications have that teacher listed.

Well, I’m happy with the guidance department because we looked on the bama website and it shows her transcript as having shown up and now the honors college app is open :). She’s working on that essay, should have it done by this weekend, then hopefully she’ll do the CBH application. She’s calling it a “sweet safety”, which is good (means she likes it).

We’ve both been ignoring all the senior yearbook photo propaganda ridiculousness, and today is picture day-for 9-11 grade. Seniors not included. Sigh. Ok, What infernal hoop do I have to jump through to get her picture in the yearbook? I go digging online…

Oops, too late, no times available before the deadline for the only studio that’s allowed to take pictures. Neither of us is terribly broken up about it-the package prices for the cheesy posed photos were ridiculous and we’d never use them, and the basic “just take your yearbook picture” sitting was $50 bucks. Just for the sitting.

D17 says it just makes her look more mysterious once she becomes powerful. “No dorky yearbook photo to show to the media” was her opinion. Lol.

Last year D18 deliberately color-cued her hair to match the greenscreen background, and the pictures that they sent home had her hair in every color that the backgrounds were. It was the funniest thing we’d ever seen-that kid has a hell of a sense of humor. She did it again this year, lol.

@jeepgirl — fantastic!!! Did you stay up til midnight?

Congrats.

@MotherOfDragons - The hair color thing is pretty funny.

I told DS he got another 32 and that it was a good score but that I just had been hoping that he would get a 33. So he asked what doors would open up if I got a 33 and I explained it just would have helped with a few merit scholarships. So he says well it probably would have helped if I had studied… ugh.

@carachel2 I happened to wake up at 1:40:) I will be a little bit tired today.

@MichiganGeorgia my D did not study the first 2 times(30 and 31). This time around she studied, but in my opinion not enough. She now sees what putting in a bit of effort can do. Now she is deciding if she should actually really study and see what she can do in Oct. Her decision is already made(UA), she just wants to see the results.

I am going crazy now. My son finally got his ACT scores first time taking. He took the practice tests and acheived 36 Math 35 Reading 36 Science and no higher than a 31 each time on writing. Had just gotten his wisdom teeth out and stayed up to take the last two practices still getting a 31 writing. He came back from the test felt like he got perfect scores in science and Math very unsure with no time to check in reading and felt great finally about writing. I almost had a heart attack. He got a perfect score math and science 35 in reading like the practice tests and a 35 for the first time in writing. No tutor this time just practice test basically learning on his own. My son is at score and won’t call me wow I just cant contain myself I guess he does better in the act test. Sat test 1500 Act composite 36 Stem kid so proud.

We got DS’s last and final ACT scores and he got a 33C (superscored with the April test it’s a 34C). Am I correct in believing that a 33C (34 SS) is better than his SAT of 1470? Should we submit both the ACT results and the SAT results or skip reporting the SAT altogether?

And just for complaining sakes, the ACT makes you pay for each test date that you want to submit. So if you want to submit scores from two test dates, that’s $24 >:( Kinda mad that he needs to report two test dates to superscore and that it’ll cost me double. The SAT allows you to pick and choose which scores/test dates to submit all under one single charge.

@fun1234 - Fantastic!!! So happy for him!!!

35!!!

I’m so happy for her!

No more testing!!!
