Question for you all planning on sending in apps soon for EA/ED.
Have you already had your test scores sent to the schools you are planning to apply to? Or do you wait you submit the Common App and then send the scores?
We’re getting to ready to submit a few apps soon and I was thinking of sending in test scores now that Son17 is done with his testing. We have not sent in any scores from previous scores.
What do the schools do with test scores that come before a full application is submitted? Do they open a file for the student, or do the scores just sit in some sort electronic bin until they receive the actual application?
@RightCoaster I sent in D’s scores back in May. Most schools quickly matched her scores up with her application, a couple needed an email to help them locate it. I’m not sure how that all gets done but the matching was almost immediate, i.e., as soon as she was able to see application status, the scores were there.
There are now a few on that list that won’t be getting an app, and as of this morning there might be one going in the Binder Of Destiny that hasn’t gotten any of our info, but just offered D a free fly in/stay over. It’s one of those colleges that I love but H felt was too far away/probably too expensive. I’m currently negotiating by text about it since he’s off with her today looking at colleges.
I’m looking forward to her snapchat stories that she does when she visits colleges. They are consistently funny, and I wish there was a way to save them.
@rightcoaster - I sent scores to some schools and one school acknowledge receiving the scores (without application) and been contacting DS since then including information about their highest scholarships.
@RightCoaster send the scores at least 3 weeks in advance of the application deadline. It can take that long for the test sites to turn them around. Schools will set up a file for your student and wait for the rest of the material.
We sent the scores out over the summer too. Only one school sent a postcard notifed us they received them. Haven’t received much follow up communications from these schools ( I don’t have access to D’s email, so just what she told me). Maybe her scores are not that inticing to them…
When my D applied two years ago, she found out the schools had received her scores by checking the online portals after applying.
Each school sent her an email with info on how to set up the portal after they received her application. That usually took a day or two. Through the portal she could check to see what they had received and what they were still waiting for.
@srk2017–we have the same email/personal assistant set-up in our house. I ordered scores a couple of days ago, but do not expect to be able to verify their arrival until after he submits an app, and that is still a long way off (11:59pm on Oct 15th, to be exact).
When my son applied three years ago, I waited until after his Oct SAT score was in before sending scores, and had no issues with scores arriving quickly, even w/o paying for rush processing. Of course, that was the CA debacle year where all schools extended app deadlines. In light of the problems SAT had in sending scores last fall, I figured I may as well order the first batch of scores now.
I sent D’s second batch of freebie ACT scores to her state safety schools back in June, but haven’t sent any others yet. I’m hesitant to spend $12 a pop to send off all those scores when we’re not completely settled on her app list yet.
Question for all of you - if you sign up for sites like Collegedata or similar, do you use real information? I find it pretty annoying that they want names and mailing addresses just to sign up for the site rather than having that be an opt in. :-L
Oh, @longwood I like the “chunking” concept, and have passed it along to D17. Even being able to cross off one item a day helps a lot. She got her LOR sheet for elusive AP Chem teacher done last night and the request put in through Naviance. We have an appointment to go over her essay this weekend. Slowly but surely!
So 1 more dumb question, thanks for being helpful.
Son17 took the ACT 9/10 and his comp score was posted already, but not the writing score. So if I log into his ACT score account and request scores to be sent will they wait until the final scoring is done before sending them to the schools? It could be a few more weeks until the writing is calculated.
Sorry to be a goober this morning regarding this stuff but I’m just trying to get everything lined up for 1st week in October when his GC and Teacher letters should be done and we can just hit SUBMIT to all schools on his common app list. Right now I’m having him apply everywhere EA with Nov1st deadlines.
Okay smart people who have done this already. My ds is applying SCEA to one school which is obviously private. He is also applying to his state flagship EA b/c thats allowed. He is ALSO hoping for a particular merit scholarship from another private institution and is planning to apply regular decision but by this particular merit scholarship’s deadline. I saw somewhere that most people who get this schollie apply ea. Can he apply EA to this private school without breaking the SCEA promise because of the merit scholarship opportunity or should he stay RD and just make the merit deadline?
@crazym0m – you would have to read the wording of the SCEA school’s own policy. I believe it is Stanford that allows EA apps to privates for scholarship consideration, as long as EA decision is non-binding. I believe, but best to confirm, that the other SCEAs do not allow this. They each have slightly different wording.
I spent most of my adult life as a career counselor at several top universities. Over the years, students began to focus their job searches towards companies featuring more work-life balance. Over time, even the most established companies began to realize that in order to attract top talent, they needed to change their company culture to reflect these values.
As I read through many posts here and see so many smart, talented kids pass on schools requiring a multitude of essays and hoop-jumping just to be considered, I wonder if this will usher in a new trend in college recruiting. Maybe eventually the top universities in the US will have to adopt a system more like the Europeans, which feature a much more streamlined admissions process - one essay and test scores, with maybe an interview. One can hope.
@RightCoaster if I remember correctly, the ACT scores are sent out once they have the writing score. It’s on their website somewhere, I vaguely remember reading it.
I’m trying to limit my nagging/college talk to the weekend. Spykid didn’t make it to bed until 11:30 last night due to test prepping for today’s math test. He was really dragging this morning. And I suspect his exhaustion is exasperated by an impending growth spurt. He’s eating non-stop.
On the stalker front, a school that came off his list 15 minutes into a campus visit has oddly begun to shower him with email and booklets. Why now? The campus visit was almost a year ago.
Okay, thanks people. ACT scores have been ordered for all schools on the “list”. I guess now it’s getting real, money has been exchanged.
Next stop… Common App submissions. Jealous of you people that have already sent in apps and got accepted.
