Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Oh no @vandyeyes I am so sorry! I am relieved for you that everything is showing clear now - prayers it will continue. and hopefully all of the signs for ED will prove to be fruitful!

@vandyeyes … So thankful you are safely through that brutal part and are emerging onto the other side.

@vandyeyes take care and prayers.

I’d give you Naviance data for my D’s school but it would probably be pretty useless. No APs/IB/Honors. Max GPA is 3.88. Lots of URMs, First Generation, etc Maybe a recruited athlete once ever few years.

@vandyeyes – wow – what you have endured and are emerging from – and your courage and composure and focus still on DS is very impressive and touching as well. Must feel good too for him to go for the ED. Hope it all works out well.

@vandyeyes --echoing others’ sentiments that I hope today’s all clear is harbinger for the ED school.

@vandyeyes I’m so sorry for what you have been through. Stay strong, and best of luck for the ED app.

Someone was asking about funny interview stories. When my D was interviewing for a scholarship a few years ago, she told the head of the school’s humanities dept that Latin was a dead language (to his great consternation). She got the scholarship in spite of that (although she didn’t end up attending the school).

I’ll play the Northeastern game! Our school had 54 apply, 27 accepted and 10 attending. Average accepted ACT score of 29, gpa of 3.4 (our school has grade deflation, one 4.0 graduate every few years).

Have we moved onto Richmond stats off Naviance?

Richmond is quite popular with our HS. A mix of athletic admits & some unhooked admits, but the athletes have definitely dragged the averages down.

3.78 GPA, 2046 SAT & 30 ACT. 47% admit rate ED & 19% admit rate RD.

ACT has been gaining favor, but we were historically an SAT school

2016 49 14 4
2015 44 9 6
2014 39 6 2
2013 38 9 4

@vandyeyes You and your family must have been going through unendurable stress these past months. I’m so happy that the outlook is positive and I hope you continue to regain your strength and health.

@vandyeyes So happy you got the word that all is clear. Great news, and the ED sounds like a good way to mark the date! Hope everything stays clear. Such a tough time for your family, I’m sure.

@vandyeyes It is great that you got the good news today and are able to begin moving past these incredible struggle. Hope that it serves as a good sign for your son’s ED choice and that yoir health continues to improve!

@vandyeyes I’m so sorry for all you’ve been going through! My thoughts are with you and your family.

@vandyeyes praise indeed. What a blessing of a day after darkness fear and chaos. How perfect for your son to seize this moment today and celebrate momentum and healing.

I am so grateful for your good news, for all the little magical signs giving you strength and pointing your S to hit submit!

Stay strong stay positive, he’s a lucky kid to have you there for him while you fight your own war.

Naviance data from an independent school with graduating class of approximately 80 a year:

Northeastern:
34 accepted 50 applied in the last 5 years,
3.68 avg GPA 29 Avg ACT
Scatter gram shows everyone above a 3.5 GPA 26 ACT being accepted

Richmond:
6 accepted 20 applied
3.79 avg GPA 28 Avg ACT
The scatter gram has more wait listed/ deferred dots than green accepted triangles.

GPAs are weighted. No honors or APs freshman year, up to 3 honors Sophmore year. .5 boost for both honors and AP. As long as one student has been accepted, the school provides access to the scatter gram. No privacy whatsoever.

@vandyeyes I was in your shoes almost 6 years ago. Cancer changes everything. I can say now being on the other side that it has changed our family for the better. My thoughts and prayers are with you and you family! Good luck to your son.

I asked my husband what his thoughts about UMD were (out of earshot of D). He said it was the type of school where if you never wanted to come out of your dorm room, nobody would notice or care. For D this isn’t an issue, but he said he’d be very cautious about recommending such a huge school to a kid who might need more connection to feel at home. It was an interesting perspective because he’s seen six schools with D now and this was the only one where he was worried about the sheer size of the classes and the size of the physical campus.

D said that Richmond reminded her very much of Duke University (where she’s spent 3 summers), so if you’ve been to Duke and you’re wondering about Richmond, she felt that they were very similar in terms of how the campus looked and felt. She also said the tour guide was one of the prettiest girls she’s ever seen.

This is interesting and why the ACT is a better test for some kids. Follow this http://in.reuters.com/article/uk-college-sat-redesign-specialreport-idINKCN11R1V6

@vandyeyes I am so very sorry for what you have been through this summer and very happy for you and your family for the good results yesterday. I echo @jeepgirl 's sentiment that such an experience changes a family in many positive ways. Best of luck to S17 on his ED app.
