Seriously, there used to be JOTD. Where is the JOTD?
D decided the other day that she is done and going to Alabama. She applied to 4 schools and still waiting for the other acceptances, but in the end her heart is at UA. It will be fun to see the other merit awards. We just put a big ass sticker on the back of my car last night. It is really tacky and we all love it. My middle D thinks it doesn’t look right with my 26.2 and I should get rid of one. We have earned both and will continue to embarrass our kids:)
Common App: started, hope to finish today except for essays and activities
LORs: Counselor and 2 Teacher’s invited, one “other” still to ask for 2 of the apps
Essays: Common App final draft done, may still have minor tweaks. Several supplements to go.
Interviews: None required/requested yet.
Auditions Scheduled: Not officially scheduled yet but the date is selected in the common app
Testing: Done although he REALLY should test again
Visits: Only after acceptances unless work trips provide a happy coincidence/opportunity
Art Supplement: He may add one to one of his apps, remains to be determined, can’t tell if required as it’s scholarship only and should be covered by the audition but a supplement may help.
Your anxiety level (1-low, 10-high): 5. Anxiety is limited to worry about merit at 6 out of 7 choices (hence the “8” on the list that may get added) and getting S to express interest/engage directly with the schools that value it at the right level. He is on track timeline wise
DS/DD anxiety level: 5
@jeepgirl congrats! The stickers are a funny thing. I finally put one on my car for SD14’s school and then felt lame because my Alma Mater wasn’t on there so added that and now with my DVC sticker…my car looks a bit junky. I think I’ll pull my alma mater off when S17 picks his school and/or drop my DVC one but I love the one for SD14’s school so that will stay. LOL! I’d keep a 26.2 too, you earned it.
It’s so funny, Alabama is such a darling here (and for good reasons). I looked at our Naviance, 5 have applied over the last 4 years (none in 2016) but no one has ever attended.
Applications complete/acceptances/applications to go: 1/0/8-12
Common App: Complete except essay tweaks.
LORs: Counselor, 3 teachers - invited & gave them info; not done yet
Essays: 15-30 to go, from 100-800 words
Interviews: 1 complete, 1 requested and 2 more at least recomended.
Testing: SAT II Physics next week
Visits: 2-3 in October/November
Incidentally, re: stress with the process. I think it helped that my daughter did not over do it with her schedule this year, since decisions would not be made based on pretty much anything she’s doing. She’s got a ‘full’ schedule, but nothing outside of her HS offerings (several APs). Marching band has been the largest time commitment. No studying for standardized tests (ok, just a bit for Physics SAT 2). She has been hanging with friends more this year that last year so far. She is going to get a job second semester, at which time she will also have her first study period ever in HS. Hopefully the job will be something she can carry through summer to make some spending $. She’s never had a paid job before. She is totally stoked for college, and finally making a decision.
Oh, and in case you haven’t, check the 2016 Parents thread. It’s interesting to see how kids are adjusting to their schools, and may give you some things to anticipate.
Good luck to all your kids as they make their way down the home stretch (it feels like the home stretch, anyway, with so many EA apps in our house).
@eandesmom Bama is pretty popular here. It’s the good large public school with great sports thing (similar to our hs). 15 have already applied, 5 admitted, 1 enrolled. That type of school does well with our students. The liberal arts schools are not popular at all.
@itsgettingreal17 I know every school does it differently, but do you mean no LORs submitted? We have to submit the CA (the student) before our GCs and Teachers really get involved.
@rtidwell I mean transcripts, GC LOR, school profile. Nothing at all from the GC’s office has been released for CA schools. They have gone out for non-CA schools, however. Now I wish D had used the school specific app for a few others that gave her the choice.
@itsgettingreal17 no transcripts, GC letter, profile or LOR’s will go out from our HS until the CA is submitted and the student changes it to “applied” in Naviance. Also, apparently nothing will go out til early October as that’s when the official school profile will have been updated but I am assured it’s all pretty instant after that date, within a day and sometimes hours.
Bama is just very far away and I suspect far far out of most of our kids comfort zones. Big state schools do well with our kids, they are just concentrated in the PNW and West although there are several private universities and a handful of LAC’s that do as well as the OOS big state sports options that are the most popular.
We did have a top athlete go to Kentucky from our 2016 class and that was kind of exciting, very out of the box for us. LOL!
@eandesmom All CA apps have been submitted weeks ago and Naviance updated to applied. I’m sending D to the GC’s office tomorrow. GC mentioned some GC training re Naviance but that was weeks ago.
I’ll see if they are waiting on a go date at D’s school too. As I said, it’s not just D that is having the hold-up.
(Sorry for my quick unclear postings. Posting on my phone.)

Transcript is ready with all senior courses listed on the transcript, School Profile looks good, NM app will be complete as soon as S17 puts the essay in the text box and hits submit, resume finalized.
4 apps will be submitted for EA so 10/7 is the date S17 has as his cut off. I’m hoping he just let’s it go and his submit next weekend. Remainder of the apps (a/k/a wave 2) will be submitted mid- Nov.
@HiToWaMom that wasn’t us on Friday, we play you guys in 3 weeks. Our team is absolutely horrible so it should be interesting to see how it goes.
Yes, the commended list made more sense to me and was fun to see as we know many of the kids quite well but I was surprised that it was only 1 who made SF. I did find out why they took the page down as soon as it went up, they had spelled his name wrong! It is interesting though, given how it came out it kind of makes me wonder if S’s class standing is better than I would have thought. We won’t get that info of course but in an odd way it made me feel better and does make me think S19 has a solid shot at commended at least when it’s his turn.
