My uni is SUPER hilly, and part of me hates it, and part of me likes it because my legs are in better condition from all the hill climbing. I will say, trudging up and down and up and down those damn hills dragging my rolling art bag behind me (it weighs at least 30 lbs), is not fun. The kids don’t seem to mind it, though-they just tromp up and down with no apparent issues.

I don’t think we’ll add anything to the additional section unless we can’t find a place to put info about the business she runs.

Usc, you could call the cali one SoCa.

Heads up to anyone who has to fill out PROFILE for this app cycle.

Check with your schools as they may have gone FAFSA only. As we are EA, 100%, I was confirming deadlines this morning and PROFILE has gone live. Turns out, out of the 3 schools that had required PROFILE, now it appears only one does, the other two have gone FAFSA only with this cycle. Which is uber exciting as one of the PROFILE schools did ask for the NCP form and now I don’t have to deal with it or ask for a waiver!

@itsgettingreal17 That top scholars lunch is going to have to be awesome to get him to write these essays. Yikes! My DH was so lucky to get those Adele tickets. He was refreshing his phone and computer for 15 minutes before they started selling and just got lucky with them. I’m sorry to hear you didn’t get tickets. That really stinks, those scalpers make it impossible for mere humans to get tickets.

USCar vs. USCal?

Not to be a downer, but I encourage everyone to get apps in early. Many of the deadlines are completion deadlines. D submitted apps shortly after NMSF informal cutoffs were determined. Yet here we are at the end of Septemeber with only 4/14 apps showing a completed status. We’ve had to keep checking Naviance daily, follow up with schools (some multiple times), follow up with teachers, and follow up with the GC and college office at D’s school on multiple occasions. One school seems to be requesting AP score reports for admissions even though not listed on their website so D had to ask about that. Multiple schools seem to be asking for a DE transcript even though D has no grades yet. One school sent the email for her to check her status to a wrong email address. One school called my D’s hs to find out about her incomplete honors college app even though the status page shows it as complete. Several schools aren’t showing her 2nd LOR, which the teacher submitted. One school didn’t have her SAT scores and had to look for it. One school is showing the school profile as missing even though Naviance shows it as having been sent. No transcripts have been sent to CA schools. And GC still hasn’t finished counselor’s letter. I’m very nervous for the Oct. 15 deadline. D is starting to share my concern now as well.

Lots can go wrong and delay things. Plan well ahead. Let your kids know.

@CT1417 I was talking about UofSC like @itsgettingreal17.

What schools have a hard deadline of 10/15? My D is applying EA to UNC-CH with a deadline of 10/15 but that is just for the CA and app fee. Other items can arrive later.

Question for the ACT experts…

Son took ACT with Writing this September. He also signed up for ACT with Writing in October. We feel there is no need to take the Writing section again. I tried to change his registration but it’s an expensive nightmare and he would need to move testing centers - not interested.

Question: If he is registered for the Writing section, MUST he sit for it? Can he just leave it blank? Anyone with any experience?

I like it @Gator88NE. DS attended an in-school visit from a USC B-) rep. He didn’t take it off his list, but he was a bit turned off by the somewhat anti-academic slant of the presentation. “We are fun. We have research, but it doesn’t have to be nerdy and boring. You can watch movies as research for film studies. Who likes to watch movies?”

@kac425 YUP! We had the same thing happen. I was beyond annoyed too! In this case the early worm got screwed.

@STEM2017 Not an expert but at DS’s ACT sitting, kids were able to switch between w/ or w/o Writing on test date. They had different classrooms for the w/ or w/o testers, and kids had to go to the right room. There were a number of confused souls. I think the kids who take w/o Writing may get an extra experimental section so if that happens, they finish about the same time as w/ Writing kids. I don’t think he will be allowed to leave the room before the end, but he can certainly leave it blank and get 0.

@itsgettingreal17 But many applications aren’t competitive deadlines. Check with your schools to see. Over half S17’s applications don’t consider anyone till all the applications are in & if you get the app in early vs… close to the deadline. And all the details, SAT, LOR have an slightly later deadline. Yes… leaving the application to the very end isn’t a good idea. But there is no need to panic yet.

This entirely depends on what type of school you are trying to get into and how competitive for scholarships you need to be. The one school that this matters for S17 he will apply to EA, meaning before Nov. 1 vs. by Feb 15th and they still consider applicants AFTER that deadline.

I would not suggest leaving it blank for a zero. I would call and find out what to do. Also my son took the ACT in Sept w/o writing and the w/o writing kids got out before the writing kids did. They did have separate rooms.

@Dolemite - DS is also planning to apply for UNC (CH) EA mainly for scholarship purposes. It’s odd they have different deadlines and EA results won’t out until last week of January.

QOTD,
Progress Report
3 Complete/ 1 acceptance/ 10 to go
Common App just about complete with essay. no supplements done
LOR 2 complete, 1 expected this week or next, none uploaded yet to Naviance
Guidance Counselor meeting today
Essays so many to go. not sure he can do them all. This is most frustrating. I don’t think what I have seen so far is great or exceptional. Not good enough for reach schools.

Testing complete
Interviews. Had one no others scheduled.

Visits Complete until spring acceptances are in
He will apply ED1 to an IVY, ED2 to a long shot reach, and then the rest over the next two months
Anxiety- High for me. While I really do know that it will all work out in the end, his pace of essay is making me crazy. He does not realize how good they need to be, and thinks he will get them done. I think he will not be able to apply to his full list… His anxiety…low…he thinks he will get it done. He doesn’t understand how good they must be for his reach schools.

I have been away for 5 days, and realize this is an old QOTD. Sorry for my let contribution.
While I am at this edit, @vandyeyes, wishing you all the best for all good news forever

Agreeing with @curiositycat333 on the “it depends” part. I don’t think any of DS’ schools will look at their applicant pool until after the application deadline. Only one to turn in before the “deadline” is USC (the “watching movies is research” one) by Dec. 1 for scholarships.

That said:
– Turn in UC applications around Thanksgiving; don’t wait until Nov. 30. The application website reportedly is always slow or crashes the last week.
– I’ve already sent SAT and ACT scores. I don’t trust those companies to be timely.
– Send DE transcripts early. I’m planning to do that soon. I’ve sent them before to summer programs and to myself, and they are generally about a week. But, Murphy’s Law says send them early.

Well my son did talk with college representatives and they said his 1st quarter grades won’t hurt them that they are late because the end of the quarter is November ist plus they have a week to work on them so because of the early timeline of early decision. They won’t base his decision on those grades. That seems strange. She did say though if something really bad happened with them at the first semester they could rescind your offer. Does this sound kind of standard. So I am guessing then they are basing his class rank up to junior year and not include senior year. That is early decision
