Ugh. We made D applied to a directional school that is just about 5 miles from our house. It would be virtually FREE for her to attend and we wanted a solid “the world is falling in” type of school on her list.
So today they send an email “Welcome to the X Family” —it does not contain an official acceptance though AND you can see the full email address of about 70 other kids who were also sent the same list. So ridiculous and so basic.
Oh, yeah. Kid has Physics SAT tomorrow! Thanks for the reminder, @CA1543. Unfortunately she has been tied up with homecoming festivities today, and the game starts shortly. I need to find her entry ticket and change batteries in her calculator. Band director was nice enough to let her leave after the halftime festivities, so at least she’ll get some good sleep.
@rtidwell Don’t quote me on this, I saw from some one’s post on a different platform, 59/75 can possibly get a 800 in physics. I have no idea how people get these kind of measures.
I have a question for all of you folks…D17 has a friend who moved here from Poland in about the 5th grade…she has a single mom who doesn’t make much money and who isn’t at all familiar with the US college system etc. Not sure how she’s going to deal with the FAFSA/Profile etc. Anyway, I am helping out as much as I can, and she just mentioned that she wants to take a gap year. What usually happens to your financial aid if you take a gap year? I feel like I’ve heard that there’s no guarantee that it will carry to the next year. Any advice/knowledge appreciated.
My daughter recently spoke to a friend of the family who works at a university that is near the top of her list. He is a professor in a program that is closely related to one my daughter is interested in (neuroscience). I emailed him a thank-you (as did my daughter), and a portion of his response was the following:
SAT: I’m pretty sure that you can use a calculator on one of the math sections, but not on the other.
I’m about 10 QOTDs behind.
Never heard of norts either on east or west coast (NY/CA). Maybe it’s a southern thing??
No applications submitted and probably not happening until shortly before EA deadlines. Good progress on essays, supplements, etc. Stress level is ok.
No strong feelings about quality of websites; I just wish there were more uniformity among them (e.g., easily found info re: CDS, NPCs, scheduling on and off-campus interviews, finding out about local rep visits, merit/FA that are in the same place across various schools’ websites).
QOTD: What’s the worst/best thing that’s happened on a college visit? This question is prompted by my very recent swan dive in front of an admissions office in which I dislocated my shoulder. D17 got to see the school; I got to see the local ER. Fun times.
JOTD: A neutron walks into a bar and has a drink, has another drink, and then a few more. At the end of the night he says, “Bartender, I want to settle my tab.” The bartender says, “For you, no charge.”
JOTD #3 (because we need three jokes today): At the Cat Olympics, there are three cats entered in the swimming race: An American cat named OneTwoThree, a German cat named EinsZweiDrei, and a French Cat named UnDeuxTrois.
The starting gun goes off and the cats dive into the pool and start swimming. They do the flip turn and come back. The first cat to the wall is OneTwoThree. The German cat, EinsZweiDrei, comes in second.
The French cat never finished because UnDeuxTrois cat sank.
@LoveTheBard That is a some visit. What did D17 think of the college? What did you think of the local ER? Now that’s one way to find out what the hospital facilities are like.
QOTD: The best thing that happened on the college visits is S17 and I visited 13 - 15 schools traveling 3 - 4 days at a time on 5 different trips. The time I got to spend with him was wonderful and I will cherish each visit. I hope he will look back on these years and cherish them as I do. I am really going to miss this kid when he leaves for college.
There really aren’t any “worst” things that come to mind.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek, @disshar - thank you for the info on your kids’ experience at Alabama. It’s comforting to hear that from actual parents with kids attending the school. DD & I are calm again - I’ll stay away from that stats page!
@Momtaro - thanks for clarifying your thoughts on W&L.
