Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@STEM2017 you may be on to something there. H went to 4 schools but has 3 degrees, The first school he transferred out of after year 1. Odd though as he has a greeen check! I will look at that. Thanks!

@STEM2017, I am not sure of your question. If you say you attended 3 colleges, you will get 3 opportunities to look up and list your colleges. Then for each college, you can say how many degrees you received.

@carachel2 D decided to go to homecoming last minute, so we scrambled to get a mum. It was the first year for us. The mums…definitely gaudy. D spent $100 and her friend $150. She texted me mid-day to say it was hurting her neck so I can’t imagine how heavy a $500 (!) one would be. No way I’d spend that much. I thought $100 was pricey.

For those of you not in Texas who have never heard of mums— here ya go!

@4beardolls – thought I saw a question from you about the CA and the essay. I don’t have specific answers but I’ve had good luck with various similar organizations if I send them a tweet on twitter with the question. For some reason, I get the quickest responses via that social media!

@4beardolls I was trying to help @eandsmom with her CA problem. I wasn’t asking a question.

My point was, if you say you (parent) went to “3” colleges, you MUST list all 3. If you say you earned “2” degrees from a college, you MUST list all 2. If you skip any of those steps, you may get hung up.

@STEM2017, OK. I see now. Agreed with what you said.
@itsgettingreal17, @thinmints, thanks for your help on CA.

Congratulations to all acceptences!!! I don’t think we will get any before december… :frowning:

@carachel2 :)) :)) Those “mums” are hilarious. DS would have never attended homecoming dances in Texas had we moved there 3 years ago. =))

Someone (sorry I don’t remember who it is and I didn’t come up with anything using the search function) mentioned a while back that when applying to Texas schools you need to complete the application first and then submit test scores, transcripts, etc. using the cover letter accessible from the application.

Well, we’d already sent his test scores and HS transcript to UT-Dallas in a fit of misguided optimism ;)) about how long it would take S to complete apps, so I didn’t worry too much about it. But now that he is actually moving forward with the app, I see how strongly they word their recommendation to use the cover letter and send everything after the app.

Did the original commenter end up resending anything using the cover letter? It’s not a huge deal for us to do so since we don’t need to pay or go through some of the hoops you all do for transcripts, etc., but I was curious before I had S call or email to find out if they have those records already associated with his name.

Same here. It was also reasonable cost. Glad DS is listening to him while not listening to me. 8-|

I think in the new landscape of what High school kids are accomplishing the Additional Info area is going to be used more until the Common App adapts and catches up. It probably needs a new section called Research/Senior Thesis/Publications or something where a kid can detail research or explain a business created. Something beyond the average Activity.

My D is in the middle of a 5 day weekend. The teachers seemed to purposely not assign homework so the seniors could prepare for the SAT/SAT 2 and work on College Apps. My D also needs to work on her research paper that she is presenting in November. Still waiting on the ACT Writing score otherwise can’t self-report the ACT in Common App.

@carachel2 I had no idea that’s what you meant by “Homecoming mums”! Mums were a thing for my HS homecoming, but they were just regular flowers. You know, corsages, on the stem, etc. Bigger than the mums sitting on my front porch but not like that!

RE: Research. Agreed with @Dolemite that kids who have done multiple research projects need a place to show case them. What is the best way for now? Use the ‘additional information’ section? Should it be title of the project and then a layman summary or abstract?

@STEM2017 well, I think you were right but there is no explanation for why that hung it up as it was all entered correctly but the hangup was in H’s education somehow. I emailed Common App this morning and literally within 10 minutes we got an email back saying they’d refreshed it and voila! Green check.

Rather impressive customer service though!

@IABooks I sent test scores (April! sent for free) ahead from CollegeBoard/ACT. I think there is no problem their “matching” test scores with the student. Actually, UT-Austin already matched them for us.

Once he gets UTD-ID, he can log in and check if what is received and what is missing.

Ok those mum’s are crazy! We had mums for all dances…but in the sense that you could buy a single stem mum and have it delivered to someone in class the day before the dance, or on valentines day. Some girls would get dozens…others none. Which seemed pretty cruel actually even if that wasn’t the intent. I don’t think they still do that at S’s school, though he is in the same district.

Now the kids do these elaborate “asks” for the dances though it’s usually more time intensive/creativity focused (and horrible spotlight if it goes wrong, aka a “no”). S plans to ask someone this week for homecoming and did ask me if he had to buy the flowers for the ask. No, I will buy those. I just hope it goes well. While he hasn’t attempted a lot of this kind of thing he had a failed valentine candy delivery and then a yes…or wait I mean no…to last years Homecoming (the girls was going with her group of girlfriends and they all got mad at her for not sticking with the group, the groups did meet up at the dance and so she retracted her yes). So…ugh. I hope it goes ok.

@eandesmom, what email address did you use? dd wants to email CA for word count questions.

Those mums were hilarious!

Homecoming was very low key. D got together with a group of girlfriends beforehand and they went in a clump. Dress ranged from formal to jeans to cross-dressing. Her school does not have a football team.

@carachel2 Wow, those mums are unbelievable!! And congrats to you and @Mom2aphysicsgeek on the recent acceptances!

We’ve been out of town and then were battling a plague here. BUT we submitted the NMSF app, and I think we’ve finished all 4 college apps! (Unless dd decides to apply some other places.) I was feeling great about it, but then she met with her old Russian prof (at the local Uni) a week ago, and she was really urging her to apply to more competitive schools. It has been bothering me, and I haven’t been sleeping well. Nothing like a little unsolicited advice to upset the cart!

I’ve been thinking too much about “undermatching,” and I know I need to let it go. Dd’s illness makes it so hard to know what a match actually is! We’re hoping to visit schools soon to get a sense of how easy it is for her to get around campus. She has been working hard on trying to increase the amount of time she’s able to walk, and I’m so proud of her!
