Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@iabooks I would definitely have him contact them and ask.

@hadmeathello Congrats on MSU!!! When did your D apply? Still waiting here. It’s in D’s top 5.

I have no problem with Bama chatter at all. Keep chatting! I like hearing about everyone’s journey and no college is a problem. :slight_smile: D and I both really liked Bama. The CC love is well deserved.

Bama is not a huge draw at D’s school. Kids here prefer UT, A&M, OU, OK State, UArk, UTD, TTech, TCU, and UNT. But it’s obvious from our Naviance that a lot of top students apply for the scholarships.

DS applied to Mississippi State and they sent an email saying his transcript didn’t have his senior schedule on it and they needed that to accept him… so I had him order one with the senior schedule which he hasn’t picked up from school yet. Then he gets an email today saying he is accepted. I’m not sure if they called his guidance counselor for the schedule or just went ahead and accepted him anyway… Now we have another transcript that he could use to apply somewhere.Hmm.

@hadmeathello - My mom,brother,sister & brother-in-law all went to Michigan State. Congrats!

@STEM2017 I do expect my kids to make the contacts with schools. The only times I have made contact are with FA office or in my role as counselor. Schools really dislike parents making the contact. I figure it is good practice at learning to advocate for themselves.

The one time I didn’t hesitate to make direct contact myself was with the GED issue. I figured that fell under my role. Even if it hadn’t, I would still have made the contact.

(ETA: I have even started making her go to see her specialist on her own. I want her to be able to handle all her own health issues by herself. By going to the appointments alone now, she can come home and discuss how she handled it and the decisions they have made. Seems like good preparation for completely being on her own.)

@hadmeathello Congratulations! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Haha, I got curious about the UA apps from our Naviance too. Just a handful applied, and none of them seemed to have stats at Presidential level, maybe a couple eligible for one of the smaller guaranteed awards. I don’t think the Bama bounty is much on the radar here.

Re: the prestige thing (is this our QOTD?) my D is hearing increasing amounts of chatter and gossip among the kids at her school. Her year seems to be a higher than average performing group by local standards and there are some kids who are quite competitive. There is definitely whispering about who got what test score, who is applying where, etc. D has kept out of it - she’s only talked a little with a couple of her very closest friends and has zero interest in getting into, erm, peeing matches :)) with these other kids. But people are asking her because they know she’s a good student. They’re probably trying to make sure she’s not thinking of applying where they are for fear of competition. I think there is a lot of bravado masking a lot of anxiety right about now!

@itsgettingreal17 Thanks! From what I’ve read, our daughters have several schools in common. Looks like she finally hit submit on 9/8. It goes from #1 to #3 on her list. She doesn’t have a strong #1 anymore, and will definitely want to wait until the $s are known. She attended the Honors College event at MSU and that was it. It went from a ‘meh’ to top contender. Had she made NMSF, she would probably be done. As it is, she should still be in the running for some decent merit. I’m not going to hold my breath, though. Good luck to your daughter, I’m sure you’ll hear soon.

@IABooks It definitely can’t hurt to contact them and find out! Especially if his app is already complete and in, I can’t see why they wouldn’t shift it for him.

@IABooks I recall lurking on the 2016 thread, and seeing people call the school to move apps between EA/ED and RD. I don’t think it’s a big deal at all.

@RightCoaster @curiositycat333 Re: the surge in Bama apps from MA schools, my guess is that this had something to do with it:

New England Record Snow Tracker: Boston Breaks All Time Seasonal Snow Record in 2014-2015

https://weather.com/news/news/new-england-boston-record-snow-tracker

I sure as heck would want to get out of Dodge with weather like that!

(perhaps that speaks to the ever-gaining popularity of the Claremont Colleges as well?)

I’ve been away from boards after my DS17 confided in us about strong feelings of depression and anxiety. We have started counseling and he has started medication. All college apps have come to a halt and he feels paralyzed and can barely make it to school. It’s a really, really tough time and I don’t know what to do. Is there anyone out there who has faced a similar circumstance. His mental health is our first priority. He really wants to go to college in the UK and his deadlines are earlier (Oct/Nov) He’s nearly done but can’t seem to revise his essay. I don’t want to push him, but am mindful of the deadlines.

@LoveTheBard – I saw (but refused to open) an email announcing a brutal winter for CT. Cannot bear the thought. Last winter was a non-event, but the one before was relentless. I haven’t opened your link, but the winter before was the one in Boston with the ten foot tall snow banks. Friends’ daughters’ prom photos had melting snow piles in the background in late April.

@christygb Sending strength. Our boys are fragile. I would strongly reconsider sending him to the UK in his current mental state. I wouldn’t even discuss it anymore. It may be the root of his anxiety.

Best wishes

@christygb I’m so sorry for the difficulty that your S is going through. I hope that you get some answers soon about the way to proceed.

@christygb I agree with @stem2017. I would not mention applications at all. His mental health should be his only concern.

Hugs and strength @christygb.

We haven’t faced that yet, but DS21 has varying levels of depression and anxiety related to being transgender (but us not being ready to let him make any hormonal changes). He has weekly counseling, and that seems to be helping, so medication hasn’t been recommended at this point.

So, I know what the refusal to go to school thing feels like, at least with a younger kid. He has said that he’ll want to go to college in-state. Probably both because of some insecurity and because of treatment of transgender people in other states being in the news.

I would worry to have our DS21 go to school out of the country or even across the country, just because the fluctuations in his moods/etc would be harder to keep track of from farther away.

Is this a longer term issue with your DS17, or is it a new thing related to senior year, applications, etc?

(Aside, I had some short-term mental health issues in spring of both senior year of high school and graduation year of college. I’ve decided that impending big transitions are/were difficult for me.)

@christygb, my daughter hits similar issues right around this time every year for seasonal reasons (we’re at a high latitude, and so the daylight hours have been rapidly getting noticeably shorter—by better than 5 minutes per day—and the sun’s azimuth is dropping equally quickly), so I’ve got a bit of experience with this (though with a condition that’s treatable with light therapy, so possibly qualitatively different). I’d suggest getting him into counseling, stat—if nothing else, it should help with the paralysis in the immediate term, and longer-term it can help provide him with some good strategies for coping.

@christygb - I am so sorry. I love to have options. Can you finalize the applications for him so that the UK is still an option?

@christygb - So sorry to hear about your son’s struggles. I would rethink his being so far away for such a long time, and perhaps explore shorter-term gap year options that include travel/study. Is weather/seasonal stuff a component in his mood? That’s also something I’d be concerned about with with respect to studying in the UK
