@itsgettingreal17 You are walking the tightrope. I would wait until Tuesday (after holiday) then make a polite call directly to GC. I think its rare that GCs write really personal LORs for these kids. I think they are cookie-cutter notes, so I can’t imagine it takes them very long to get one done.
My son has at least three applications that are waiting for a transcript to make a decision. Unfortunately, those apps have January and February deadlines, so I’m afraid that the guidance office has put them on the back burner. Very annoying because all it takes is the push of a button to send it.
@itsgettingreal17 I know if I were falling down on my job, my clients would contact someone else at my company. I don’t see how this is much different. There are deadlines that need to be met. I don’t see a problem with contacting someone at the school for help. I think you are handling it calmly. It is already 10/6. I would be freaking out. – From a project manager that sees the year slipping away. ~X(
@itsgettingreal17 I am thinking maybe you can email GC for a meeting request. And summarize some topics you’d like to discuss with her. That list should include things you want to update her with (such as fin aid/merit app information that you want to share with her – just to make it not appear as if you are just pushing her for tasks status) and things that you need her help with. So that she know that you are looking into this, and she probably should hurry up completing her tasks like now BTW, I am the KNOWN team player in my department :))
@itsgettingreal17 So sorry to hear about the trouble. Is there another GC, more senior at school, kind of Head of GC department who can submit the transcript for your D?
Ours is a very small school but with several GCs and I am now finding out who does what. There is the Registrar who normally handles transcripts and class registrations but she is not at all involved with college apps. And then there is a recent hire in CC who sends electronically all the transcripts (sort of secretary for all GCs) and then sends GC newsletters to senior parents (information overload!) The nice thing is that this person has been very responsive and immediately responds and sends out the transcripts even Friday 9PM. I know we are lucky. Apparently he has access to all the transcripts and all GC and teacher LORs, if completed, and he can upload them if/when needed.
I think that many high schools do not send transcripts early. Since we haven’t heard about scary stories of kids not getting transcripts sent in time, I’m not worried yet. If apps were due next week, then I’d be nervous.
I was just looking up application requirements for Rose-Hulman (I think RH might be on @STEM2017 S’s list) and read that they actually superscore across the SAT and ACT:
I’ve never heard of any other school doing this, but it works out great for D. Her math score (strongest area on all tests) is a bit higher on ACT (3 percentage points), and her SAT reading is 8 percentage points higher than ACT English. I thought I’d put it here in case anyone else is in a similar situation and lucky enough to have a school that scores across both tests.
D came home pretty enthusiastic about college apps today. She has two non-CA EA schools that she plans on submitting this weekend (first submissions). We’ll see!
I hope @greeny8 and family along with anyone else who might be affected by the hurricane is staying safe.
@snoozn Rose-Hulman is our “prestige” school thanks to US News! If he gets accepted it will be nice for him to know that the #1 engineering school in the country wants him, regardless if he attends or not.
@fun1234@carachel2 If I remember correctly Northeastern changed the verbiage on their NMF award last year. It used to be a flat $30k, but the new verbiage was up to $30k, with several kids receiving significantly less. Check the Northeastern threads, but I think there was also a lot of discussion about their NMF award decreasing the amount of financial aid the student received. D17 toured Northeastern last spring, and though she kind of liked the co-op program, it did not make the list.
Oh hey I’ve got a story to share that really chaps my hide.
The girl who sits next to me in ceramics class came in with red puffy eyes. We’re like, are you ok? Turns out she’s not sad, she is allergic to cats.
Her roommate got a letter from a “doctor” online stating that she needs an emotional support cat. She took the letter down to the disability office at our university, got an accommodation, and went out and got a kitten. Without asking the roommate.
Now the roommate is miserable, and the disability office is saying there’s nothing they can do. Unbelievable. There are going to be animals all over the dorms if something isn’t changed (and I post this as a HUGE animal lover).
Bama Talk - I welcome it. I enjoy reading about all of the different schools. But if y’all (heh) want to have a separate conversion, might I suggest making a thread in the University of Alabama forum? Seems like a better solution than facebook.
And can I just chime in that the thought of a cat in a small dorm room makes me kind of sick? Where on earth does that litter box go? There is no escaping the smell.
Don’t get me wrong…I love cats. But I don’t think they belong in a dorm room when the other roommate doesn’t have a choice.
@MotherOfDragons if it were my child who was allergic I would be going all Mother Of Dragon breathing fire at the disability office and elevating post haste.
I’m done being nice. I sent a strongly worded email to the principal and assistant principals. I will give them time to investigate and follow up in the early afternoon. They never like when I have to get involved, so I expect that D will get called to the office tomorrow to get it handled.
