Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I just wanted to post on behalf of all the people who don’t have any apps submitted, and in fact can’t imagine submitting any much in advance of the deadline. (There are others of you, aren’t there???) For us, the 1st deadline is 11/1. DD has an essay that’s solidly in the “do no harm” category. She’s not 100% satisfied however. She keeps imagining this amazing “costco” essay, and so instead of improving her existing essay, her favorite activity is to write a couple of paragraphs for a new essay…

I feel like I have to let her explore for a little bit more. To be honest, there’s no real reason to finalize yet. Yes, my personality would really really really like the apps to be submitted and out of the way. But that’s definitely not her personality. So I just have to bite my tongue and be patient…

@thshadow – will be right there with you at midnight the night before each deadline. This Sun night for NMSF, next Sat for GT, then a few for Nov 1st, another for Dec 1st and yet more for Jan 1st. Fun, fun, fun…

I asked that he TRY to finish the CA essay today so that he could step back and look at it before hitting send. Nothing yet.

Our first apps are due 11/30, my daughter won’t submit any much earlier than that. She’s still taking one more ACT on 10/22, so we want that in for CSU and UC apps. All of her Common app schools are 12/15-2/01 which will allow her fall grades to be in which will only help her as she’s taking 4 AP and 3 college classes. No early apps for us

We’ve got 3 due 11/1. Waiting until then makes me REALLY nervous as the school will not send transcripts or upload LOR’s until apps show as “applied” in Naviance. One of his LOR writers is notoriously late on things and requires nagging. If he can’t nag until he hits submit…it makes me super nervous! Very close on 3 of them. Need final edits on the main essay and tweakage of the activities list and then should be able to hit submit.

The rest are 12/1 that have supplements, none of which are started. They are working on essays in AP Lit on Monday (and I really hope another day but I’ll take what they give!). I would vastly prefer he spend that starting the supplements and that the main essay is wrapped up in a bow tomorrow but we will see how that plays out tomorrow, he’s out of commission today and booked solid all week. Next week is homecoming so that’s shot and then we are into the timeline danger zone in my opinion.

@theshadow @CT1417 @socalmom007 - Count us in on the no apps yet bandwagon for now and for the immediately foreseeable future.

I’m hoping for the REA/SCEA (I forget which schools do which) app that is due Nov. 1st will get out by Oct. 20th or so…then there are two OOS Public with EA, followed by a scholarship app by mid Nov., followed by the UCs, then USCal.

I was pushing for her to submit the CA app to schools without supplements, since her CA essay has been pretty much good to go for a while, but all of the schools other than the aforementioned are RD (no rolling) so what’s the point? Every once in a while when she works on a supplement, she’ll get an idea about wording something slightly better on her CA essay, to the extra time hasn’t been without its benefits.

Ok, I finished our FAFSA. After the submission, the page said that our EFC is zero and D is eligible for grants, when I know that we should be full pay practically everywhere. I used IRS interface to import our tax return. Do anyone know what happened? Did I make a mistake? I think I should be able to go back to edit?

^ sounds like you did or it’s not working correctly. I would go back and look through everything, the good news is you have plenty of time.

@SincererLove In addition to importing from the IRS did you manually answer the questions related to investments and cash/savings/checking and parents pyaments to tax-deferred pensions and retirement?

@thshadow I’m with you! No applications submitted. Bits and pieces are starting to trickle in, FAFSA done, first interview complete, test scores submitted, LOR should be all set… but no formal applications submitted. None of the schools on the list are EA and D17 can’t decide if she wants to do ED or not and will make the decision this week.

We didn’t get Rosh Hashanah off, nor will we get Columbus Day off of school so limited time to work on applications.

1 choice's application is submitted. Finishing the last essay for the last 1. One 100 word short response. Tonight is the finish line. So close. I am waiting for her to run through the ribbon!

Sorry, guys, I cannot imagine this dragging on for months more. Ugh. I want her to have her life back!

Gifts for LoRs: Um, she’ll probably write a thank-you note? As a college professor—caution: that means the dynamic is probably different—I’ve gotten a couple bars of chocolate along the way, but mostly written or verbal thanks, and that’s all I really want. Even not that much is fine—writing letters is a service to the discipline—it’s just part of what I do.

@thshadow No apps submitted here yet, but he’s finishing up some essays and is almost ready to hit send on a few.

With regard to the essays, my D15 was constantly editing and rewriting. She changed her opening sentence and rewrote another part of her common app essay literally 3 minutes before she sent it off for an EA app on 10/30. It was very stressful with lots of anxiety, and she felt it was never good enough.

In contrast, S17 has had his common app essay ready for about 2 months and doesn’t feel inclined to redo. He told me that he wrote it one day in school during his lunch period. ~X(

LOR thank yous - frankly I’m staggered that his teachers and gc think so highly of our kid. I love him dearly but truthfully he is a massive PITA. Like really, he is. Very, very grateful and happy that his recommenders see a different side of him. Our gifts will be handwritten notes and fancy chocolate. A rule of thumb in our house is only give gifts you would like recieve. And, if for whatever reason the recipient doesn’t do chocolate, they surely know someone who does.

Oh, I just came across this thread, wish I joined sooner  This is painful waiting for D17 to finish the common app. She has a couple schools with the 11/1 deadline and as someone mentioned earlier, I keep stressing that her HS wont submit transcripts/recs until she’s done! I tried to encourage her to use her days off last week and this long weekend to finalize everything, but it’s still not happening! very stressful.

LOR thank you’s. Our gifts will be handwritten notes and then I am not sure. Possibly baby gear from the school of choice for the newest addition to one LOR writers family, brand new baby a month ago but all will get something personal.

@Fishnlines29 our school will not submit until the application is in. It’s their policy. I understand, why send a transcript or a LOR and then the kid doesn’t even apply. Still though, it makes me feel we HAVE to get them in well in advance.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek - au contraire, DD is pretty much ignoring the application process. Not crimping her style at all!

The important (weird) reason it’s helpful to wait for us - we’re not sure of her senior schedule yet! :open_mouth: In her school, typically the kids that take BC calc took AB calc in 11th grade. She only took pre-calc in 11th grade, yet studied (a little) over the summer and signed up for BC. She’s struggling a bit, and was considering switching down to AB - but then she’d have to make other changes to her schedule…

Congrats to all with recent acceptances or progress on the application front.

D now has good clean drafts of all supplemental essays and is waiting on GC approval so she can hit the send button. Then she’ll have several more for scholarship consideration, three of which must be complete by Nov. 1.

Still waiting on one LOR.

@thshadow Our oldest son approached college apps that way and everything turned out exactly the way he wanted. It isn’t necessarily a bad choice!

This child, however, has a lot more pressure on her bc she needs competitive scholarship $$ and she weighs every single word.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

This: “she weighs every single word.”

Finished Ds Bama dorm registration—did we miss the page where you select an actual dorm preference like Ridgecrest or Lakeside, etc??

Read some profiles and I think I spotted a few CC daughters, lol!
