Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Question about sending SAT scores. Today is the last day to send free scores from the October 1 sitting. My daughter only took the Physics Subject Test on that date. We want to utilize our 4 free score reports. When I select the schools, it looks like her older Math 2 score will go to each school too? Is that right? (I guess I should call CB, but I thought a reminder was in order). We have already sent her Math 2 score to some schools, so didn’t know if this was overkill, and if we should use the free scores for some of her schools that have not gotten any scores yet. Also, it may get confusing to dbl-send scores, so should I uncheck the Math scores?

@123field Welcome and congratulations on your daughter’s successful applications!

@hadmeathello – I would not resend SAT math scores to schools that already received the. I would uncheck math if duplicative. My DS took SAT Physics to but I am waiting to see the score - only a few colleges will be expecting to get it.

Question re common App Honors list. Do you think it is better/more meaningful to list AP Scholar, NM commended with PSAT score (1 pt below NMSF) or National Honor Society - NHS is also under Activities as DS has to do tutoring. thanks!! thanks all!!

@hadmeathello, I agree that if you already sent some score to a school, only send the nre score using score choice. But if you have a school you haven’t sent any scores to yet, use the free sent to send them all.

Thanks @CA1543. Just got off the phone with CB, and your answer was way more clear than theirs! They confirmed what you said. I would have waited to send any scores until now had I known I would get the previous for free!

I would list NM Commended, for sure, but I wouldn’t list the selection index. NHS and AP Scholar I would leave off. They can figure out AP Scholar, and you already have NHS. I’ve heard NHS varies wildly between HS, though. Ours is extremely lame. No time commitment other than turning in the forms. Sounds like yours has a little more of a commitment.

I would also list NM Commended, maybe AP Scholar but they can probably figure it out if scores are self-reported on the application.

OK, now I see my SAT score question was really uninformed :D. We are an ACT family. I’ve heard of score choice, but I thought that was an ‘option’. Now I get it…whenever you order a score, you get ‘score choice’, but it defaults to ‘all scores’. We only have the 2 SAT Subject scores, so it looked a little weird.

When we started all this, I signed my daughter up to take Subject tests. In reality, she probably could have gotten by without them. Don’t tell her that, though!

FB secret group CC2017 is active now. Due to FB bugs, it became a multistep process to add member to the group, but I am willing to do it. Please PM if you are interested. My day job is very strict about privacy, so I give utmost importance to privacy.

Welcome @123field and congrats on acceptances!

I gotta say not nagging is heaven. My D came home from school today (yup, no holiday here) and I said to her ‘go take a nap and enjoy your free time’. She smiled and all is good in the world.

@greeny8 - I’m hoping to be nag free by October 23rd. My DS has an appt with his GC on Wednesday and then next Thursday he booked a double appt. This week, they will review essays one more time. Next Thursday, they’ll review the common app, activities, who needs what test scores, etc. Then he and I will sit down with the Visa card and submit apps to 3 EA schools. I’ve encouraged him to have everything done by October 23rd so he doesn’t have to scurry around at the last minute. That gives time to have uploading or copy-paste errors and fix in plenty of time.

We have paid to have ACT scores sent to all schools already (something I could do).

Question - DS was not pleased with Subject Test scores (didn’t study) and none of his schools require them. But he got 5s on Physics 1 and Calc AB AP tests and 4s on Eng and Computer Science. Should he submit those? Applying for Engineering. Sending a 34ACT (Superscore 35)

YAY for NAG FREE! 13 days and counting.

@phoenixmomof2 You do not have to send the AP test scores, but you can self report them in the Common App. There you can choose to report AP test scores as well as SAT, ACT, SAT subject test scores.

@Ynotgo - Please pardon my ignorance, but what is slideroom? (I know about the Coalition app’s notorious “lockers” and zeemee, but I haven’t heard anything about slideroom).

Which brings me to the QOTD - how many of your non-artists and non-performring C17s are using zeemee and the like? What are you putting out there?

@youcee - love the candor of USC’s response!

And welcome new de-lurkers!

@LoveTheBard I haven’t actually looked at either one; DS created the Slideroom account. I just nagged. But I gather that Slideroom is similar to Zeemee. My impression is that Zeemee is somehow more artsy.

MIT uses Slideroom for kids who want to submit various types of supplements. DS will be doing a research supplement and a maker supplement. They also use Slideroom for art and music supplements. There are specific questions that they have to answer in the supplement (lots of questions for research), so perhaps Slideroom is more controlled, and Zeemee is more free-form?

I found a list of Common App colleges that allow Slideroom supplements here: http://www.slideroom.com/commonapp/ Lots of colleges I’ve heard about here. Only a few from DS’ list, and those might be for drama/art/music type supplements–we don’t know yet.

I think Slideroom also has an agreement with the Universal Application, because DS asked me what the Universal Application is when he was creating a Slideroom account.

@phoenixmomof2, I agree with payn4ward. You can self report the AP score and only send them to the school he chooses. If your S doesn’t like his subject test scores and he doesn’t need them, then there is absolutely no reason to send them. The AP send and the SAT send are different pices of the College Board and each costs a separate $15 (of course).

Thank you @mtrosemom and @payn4ward .

I guess I was wondering if sending official AP scores would enhance an engineering app. But, since his ACT is very strong, he’ll just self report his APs on the CA and leave it at that. Not sending SAT score (took it once) or Subject tests.

The northeastern slideroom is only for art and design majors. D17 could not submit her maker portfolio for computer science, unfortunately. Which is too bad because she put a crap ton of work into it.

@LoveTheBard My daughter has a ZeeMee page that she has included in a couple applications as additional information (non-CA schools). Tulane and another of her schools specifically ask for it (optionally), but Tulane is off the list now. ZeeMee is very free-form. My daughter has pictures/short video clips of her active in some of her ECs: Band/Orchestra/Lacrosse/Service project. Then she has some artsy photos and friend pics. It sounds random, but it’s kind of cool. She also lists her ZeeMee page on her resume.

BTW, @srk2017, thanks for setting of the FB group. You beat me to it.

@LoveTheBard I really encouraged S to set up any of the tools to share a portfolio, but he never got enthusiastic about it. He really enjoys 3D modeling and printing in his own time, so I envisioned some video of the process and finished products as well as some videos/stills of his ECs a la @hadmeathello’s D.

It was really cool in my head. 8-> Too bad it never happened, but I don’t think it would have mattered for admissions at any of the places he’s applying.

@lovethebard My Dd has a zeemee page. It is pretty simple. She does not do an introductory video. She doesn’t talk about herself. She simply put together a visual portfolio supporting what she included in her application.
