I know little about NYU either, but wanted to add that the Tandon School of Engineering is out in Brooklyn, not in the Village with the rest of NYU. My son worked with a CS prof out at the Brooklyn campus the summer before last. It was a pleasant enough commute, but it was still not Manhattan.
Common App question here: In the “activities section”, the last question asked for each activity is “do you plan to continue in a similar activity in college.” This is a tough one because D has two very major ECs but most schools don’t have one of them and some schools don’t have either. She is applying to schools that have one, both, and neither, as continuing would be great but not a dealbreaker. I’m afraid if she indicates that she intends to continue an activity, then a school that doesn’t offer it will think she is not serious about attending. But there is no way to customize according to the school. Should she indicate she intends to continue or not? Or am I overthinking?
No more essays or apps but D just turned in her EE
You mean EA?
We toured NYU this summer, Tandon is in Brooklyn, the rest of campus is centered in Greenwich Village.
@Aida There IS a way to customize EC list for each school. CA allows unlimited edits. You just have to be careful each time the “correct” answer is chosen for the right school.
@payn4ward - Got it! Thanks so much!!
@SincererLove – I just watched the video, that does make you feel a bit better!
@hadmeathello - yes the Open House was great, my D really wants to go there… pretty much has wanted to go somewhere in NYC since she was 10 - not sure where she stands though - only 3 of 10 get in. Your comment about being back and forth on caring about EA apps being done hits home! She is applying to 3 as safeties. She wanted for ED2 or RD for NYU to “up” her sat scores a bit. Also, my D is interested in astrophysics and I agree with @Mom2aphysicsgeek in researching it that it’s more of a grad school major
@payn4ward, I think @carachel2 means EE as in the IB extended essay.
@hadmeathello How bad is the SSA??
For those out of the loop, what is SSA?
@Ynotgo - Hi, she wants CAS for Physics but we also sat in a session for Global studies which has a core curriculum with smaller classes and study abroad early - she liked that option, they say you can work it with CAS.
Butting in, SSA is Selective Scholarship Application for Indiana University.
Or social security administration.
Or selective service application.
Or almost selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Which I probably need.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek The SSA is IU-B’s Selective Scholarship Application, used for Honors and a bunch of other programs.
@hadmeathello I’m curious about the SSA as well. How many essays are there? D is still working on her Fry application. Hopefully she’ll be done with that before she has to start the SSA. 1 school, 3 scholarship applications, 20 essays (I’m exaggerating…only a little :)))
For those interested in USCar . . .
We went to the Top Scholars dinner today. It was held at Ruth’s Chris. There were about 18-20 students. The rep said that they host about 20-25 of them across the country and try to keep attendance to 50 or below (that includes one parent for each student). D actually knew 3 of the other attendees, which was a surprise. The food was great. They did not skimp on the selections. Large steaks, lobsters, etc. The vegetarian option for D was just grilled vegetables, which is what I expected, but a little disappointing for her. It is a steakhouse after all. The presenters were very engaging and represented the school well. I want to go there now. lol D was excited until the end when they mentioned how competitive the top scholarships are. It was news to her, but not news to me. The competitiveness of these top scholarships is precisely why she’s applying to 16 schools. They get about 3,000 applicants and invite 40 students to interview, each of whom will receive a scholarship. 20 get McNair (the top one), 20 get the Horseshoe (second top scholly). Good luck to all who are applying! Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Sunday update
Bit of drama here this weekend. It was supposed to be homecoming but instead we were preparing for a possible “storm of the century” which meant all school districts in the area cancelled homecoming and any Saturday activities. But of course the kids still wanted to get together and after finally being persuaded driving in what "could’ be 70 mph winds was a terrible no good bad idea, they settled for takeout and hunkering down at one of the girls houses. Which is fine but it meant the bulk of the day, lost, for college apps (and homework). And then we get to do it again on the rescheduled date!
S worked on his activities list. In his mind. In mine he changed maybe 5 words on 2 of the activities. Not done.
He also worked on the essay but thinks he made it worse. And isn’t versioning…luckily he has a paper copy of the previous iteration.
But hey…he came up with two “solid” ideas for his senior quote (yes, we can see the priorities here)
To wear a floral shirt is an experience
-Brian Wilson
Just quote Karl Marx
-Mom
OK, Cubs lost. Back to college apps wishing I taught my daughter a split seam fastball.
@itsgettingreal17 Yeah, we bought one of the Top Scholars lottery tickets too. We go next weekend…also to a Ruth’s Chris’. Have you visited?
As for the SSA, 2 more essays. Get ready for another analytical essay. Not exactly clear if you can re-use the one from the Wells app, but I’m thinking not.
@hadmeathello We haven’t visited. No more visits for us unless merit comes through. You? D really liked the campus based on the virtual tour. It’s the “lazy river” school often mentioned on CC with derision.
@itsgettingreal17 Yes, we visited when we did a visit much like Quan’s visit of the Carolinas. It was another driving rainstorm, so D always seems to like those schools :-??. She really liked the campus. It doesn’t have Neuroscience as a major, so that’s the strike against it, but she sure wouldn’t mind the warmer weather. It borders on hades-hot, though 8-X. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about the honors college. It’s quite nice…dorm is beautiful. It’s remained in the top 4-5.
I’m not familiar with the ‘lazy river’. Maybe I don’t want to know
I thought the lazy river school was High Point in NC? Is there more than one lazy river school? I guess climbing walls weren’t enough…
