Do you think they’ll need the college transcripts for applications or just to those she’s accepted at??? Ugh… we are applying to over 20 schools, such a pain in the butt.
@NoelleCf CSU does have WUE and many other options for OOS students

CU Boulder doesn’t offer squat lol. But I also suspect Boulder is along the lines of exactly what she doesn’t want. Our D is motivated to make it work at Cal Poly, she absolutely loves it there.
I am really not sure what to do about the whole college transcript thing. All S has is one “college in the hs” class, which shows on his HS school transcript and a summer class that was 1 credit. I was thinking I could send both to wherever he matriculates.
We sent transcripts from both universities where our son DE during high school even though the courses were on his transcript. For some schools it is easy bc you just log into the national clearinghouse and just list all the schools where you want the transcripts sent, sort of like ordering SAT scores.
We went to the USCar scholars dinner on Saturday and there were about six kids with parents so a small group. It was a good presentation and I thought it sounded great. DS looked at the app and essays when we got home and said no way. He is happy with Bama and is confident about his UT app so he says he is done. I am jealous of all of your kiddos that will have choices. I’m afraid my DS is limiting his choices and it worries me that he will regret not applying to more schools in April. I can’t do these apps and essays for him and no amount of nagging gets him interested in other schools. Anyone else is this boat?
@jedwards …my kid is done too.
Honestly, I think it shows a content kid who has a reach school but can see himself at his safety. You’ve done a great job!
@paveyourpath sorry to hear about the interview. I don’t even know why some are necessary. I don’t think they have much of an impact on admission.
Welcome to those current delurkers!
I’m envious of the kids and parents that are done!!!
My daughter has an alumni interview Sunday for one of her schools, ahh… I hope it’s not like that!
@NoelleCf re Naviance - yes the child’s account is needed to perform all the app changes, see LOR requests, etc.
Activity participation in college - My fear is that by checking no for some activities, it will appear that she won’t be active on campus. :-/
Welcome to new posters and congrats for being done to the lucky few!
S has completed all initial apps and if online portals are to be believed, he has been accepted at 6 of the 8, with the remaining 2 being regular decision schools. Now I’m lost in a morass of who has separate scholarship apps, who requires the FAFSA or other fin aid docs for merit scholarships, and the deadlines for those and honors college apps. I am envious of those of you who love research and spreadsheets!
@paveyourpath oh no, that’s a bit terrifying. Is the school now off the list???
S is not thrilled about trying to fit in interviews but since he can’t visit most of his schools, it is the best way to show interest even if not required. It does make me nervous an interviewer will kill the school for him though.
@IABooks I’m envious of all initial apps in and 6 acceptances! We are 0:0 so far…
@NoelleCf Cal Poly really isn’t for everyone particularly as you can’t change majors very often. If she won’t go, they don’t have her apply. I know students at MS that love it there. I guess as a parent I’d like her to have more than one choice, but I think it’s OK not to try for top schools. I’d tried to get S17 to look at MS but he has his heart on Oregon Schools. The mechatronics minor is probably not that common. I assume she has looked at CU Fort Collins? That’s a school several people on CC have been suggesting for my S17.
Stuff I stopped doing after HS.
I was politically active in HS. Very strong social causes.
Music, I used to play 3 instruments. Although I gave up most of those after 10th grade.
Stuff I started in College.
I joined the sailing team.
Scuba Diving
I’ve watched a bunch of D12’s friend totally top major EC’s they were in when they got to university. Theater, music etc. This is why I’m skeptical S17 will really do Marching Band in college, even though it’s been one of his criteria for a school.
@DMV301 My son was very much like your until a few weeks ago. Wasn’t sure if he wanted to do Engineering or not probably something in STEM. Maybe math or physics, maybe engineering, CS or even Biology. But he’s settled on CS for now and it gives him a lot of flexibility. For the time being he’s picked CS.
What we did was add in a lot of flexibility to where he looked. Many Engineering programs you must get INTO the program as a freshman. We looked at a few schools where there was flexibility, like OSU. The idea was he’d see where he got in, and revisit the issue next spring when he’d have a better idea after a most of senior year courses.
The tricky part of CS is in some schools it’s in Engineering, other’s it’s not, and some it’s in BOTH. (True for UC Berkley and CU Boulder for example.) If you think you want Engineering apply there, it’s easier to drop out and do something like physics.
@socalmom007 UC’s and Cal States don’t ask for transcripts at application. Every other school I know does ask for them. Check with each school individually. Was about to look into sending the 3 transcripts DS needs sent tonight.
@jedwards70 Don’t fret, you’re in an enviable position of your son having an acceptance he’s happy with. I wish it was that easy with the California schools. It used to be, but hasn’t been that way for a long time.
@greeny8 The interviewer cited the % the interview was worth in the admission decision. Granted, it is not an overwhelming percentage but it’s still a percentage.
@eandesmom It’s not off the list. He had a great info session/ tour and then had a great interaction with the regional AO when she was in town last month. I told him to shake it off and don’t look back. Onward and upward. He has a few more interviews he’ll have to endure. It can only get better from here.
@paveyourpath – there is literally no vetting of the alum interviewers. I was an alum interviewer right out of college. What did I know? I know so much more now ( b/c of a general interest in college admissions, having a child at the same school, and b/c of all the info that is pushed out electronically). However, now that I realize how much the applicants think these interviews matter, I am afraid to step up to be an interviewer again.
My son has had a couple of on-campus interviews conducted by seniors working in the admission office. At least those are more consistent and the students know more about what is happening on campus.
Personally I don’t feel that alum interviews hold much weight beyond demonstrating interest, although I am sure this varies by school. (Per my son, the same older man conducts all local MIT interviews, so I would guess his comments are taken more seriously.)
I just believe that it is important to request the interview when it is offered, as to not do so would imply a lack of interest.
Remember back to the best case / worse case situations we had for the question of the day earlier? Many of us talked about our children getting essay fatigue and we’ve seen some of that. However, did anyone predict the essay review fatigue we parents have? I am loathe to complain about it anywhere other than here because I see how hard D has been working. I smile and repeat out loud, “Oh good, I can’t wait to read another one or your essays!” My nose only grows a little.
I’m trying desperately hard to only spot the grammar errors and not change her voice. After four years of Latin though, sometimes I can’t help but a suggest a word change or two. Usually, I’m duly ignored.
But hey, she can have the coffee today. Pitt app complete and submitted. Common app and essay complete. Many supplementals nearly complete.
(There seems to be a backup at the editor’s office.)
@Dave_N – others may disagree, but I am with you in suggesting a word or two. He doesn’t always listen, and will never go so far as to thank me for my suggestions, but I have seen my rewording appear in a subsequent revision round. The essay is his, but he has adopted one or two of my suggestions, and he will allow my comments on the activity section.
I cannot yet complain of fatigue as he has only submitted one app. (And its portal says that the transcript is missing and required, while I know the teacher submitted it days ago and the school downloaded it yesterday.) But I am tired of the months of writing, editing, and last-minute filing that are still in front of him.
At this point, he has started his fourth year of Latin and I only got through three of Latin & three of Spanish.
Hope the backlog at your editor’s office clears soon.
@NoelleCf, you asked if anyone had a high stat kid who wants nothing to do with elite or prestigious schools. I do. S will be a National Merit Finalist and is competitive enough to roll the dice for an elite (lottery) school. However, he doesn’t want the stress that an elite school would entail. I respect his choice and concern. He is applying to schools where he will be in the top 25% or higher. He will get into the honors colleges. He will be happy. Luckily his GC understands that not all kids will fit at an ivy or top tier school, and she is supporting his choices.
(I will add that he is applying to Cal Poly. He liked it but as an OOS, it would be his most expensive choice.)
