Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@eandesmom, thanks! That helps a lot!

@klinska I think if a school requirement is satisfied for a given section, the dot is green. If a section is not required by the school, it will automatically be green. For example, some of D’s schools require 1 teach LOR, some require 2. We only have 1 teacher uploaded so far. So the schools require 1 shows green dot since their requirements of LOR are met. The schools require 2 shows yellow dot since their requirements for 2 LOR are not yet met. Most schools do not require other section, so they all show green for D even there are nothing in that section.

This discussion about recommendations prompted me to open son’s CA and take a look around. University of Delaware requires 1 teacher recommendation and allows 4 optional. They also allow 5 optional “other” recommendations. Add this to the 7 writing assignments as part of the app.

Last year they had 25,000 applicants.

Now, of course most applicants will not send in anywhere near the maximum amount recommendations, but if they did, that is alot of reading for the admissions department at U Del!

@IABooks We hear “I forgot” an awful lot too. It’s amazing he’s able to pass any classes.

Thank you all. We are very proud of S on his Eagle achievement.
@RightCoaster, S’s Eagle Scout project was pretty involved and included computers, which he has a fondness for. First he coordinated an e-waste recycle day for our community in conjunction with a local e-waste recycling facility. The he took some of the kids from the Troop to the recycle facility and they spent the morning putting in community service hours by tearing down computers for recycling (great fun for the boys). Finally, he identified a couple of families from a title 1 schools that needed, but couldn’t afford, computers (each family also had to have volunteer hours at their school) and used his Troop community service hours bank to donate computers to these families. It was a project that seemed to go on FOREVER! But now it is done and yes, we can plan the party!! <:-P :smiley: :x

Congrats @mtrosemom !!! What an achievement for your DS.

I’ve noticed that many colleges give automatic scholarships to Eagle Scouts. Is there a comprehensive list out there for you to research. That would be helpful.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

H is tech support for our iPhones here. When he travels abroad, he buys a SIM card ahead of time (eBay) for the country he will be in, and switches it out when it’s time. He has done this for the kids when they’ve done exchange programs too. That’s all I know about it. Blissfully ignorant here. :slight_smile:

@IABooks Senior Night for our marching band is all about the pictures. It’s why they put the “parent” part of it during the first half of the game. The band parents, organize someone (usually another parent) to come and take pictures. But we don’t try and do it on the field. I was asked at the last minute two years ago to do this from the field and it was a disaster. Not enough time, pictures came out blurry and I missed groups.

@mtrosemom Congrats on your son making Eagle scout.

Anyone here use Parchment to send transcripts? I tried the other night and was frustrated. If I am frustrated and can’t figure it out, I figure other must be. I’m trying to make an account to send the transcripts (figured it’s a step I could do for S17) and it asks me if I’m a parent. If I click “yes” it gets confused between information about me & my child (the student). Or maybe it doesn’t but the UI isn’t clear. Obviously the solution is I just make the account “for” my child and don’t worry about this nonsense of am I am the parent or the child.

@STEM2017, @oldbrookie, I seriously could’ve been a contender for the diddly-squat title back in high school, too, but I figured, why bother putting forth all that effort?

@mtrosemom Sounds like a GREAT Eagle Scout project. I really like how it involved leadership. I’ve seen the results of a well meaning but ill thought out eagle scout project in my neighborhood.

And just a nit pick on your explanation, I know girls that would enjoy tearing down computers. Probably not your intention to imply girls wouldn’t enjoy it but I pay a lot of attention to my pronouns when talking about engineering/cs projects. We need to teach boys that girls enjoy this stuff as well.

@mtrosemom What an achievement! =D> :O) Congratulations on becoming an Eagle parent! <:-P <:-P <:-P
Some Eagle scouts in our troop wanted white horses and what not for their Court of Honor but they never materialized. :)) :))
Now you can show off all the trophies, pinewood derby cars and arrow of light achievement on display at the CoH. :x
Time to gather photos and music for the slide show. Lots of fun work for after apps are in! =D> <:-P
S19 likes building computers. I should mention your S’s Eagle project to him. I am really really hoping S19 does Eagle service project this summer. :-w

@mtrosemom congrats to your son!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I’ve had tmobile for about a decade. It works pretty well when we’re on cruises in the caribbean. I"m not sure about Skype or Facetime since that uses data, and for the life of me I can’t understand how the “internet” can be unlimited but your “data” isn’t, but every time we dock in mexico we can catch up on texting.

Which reminds me, in the Condi Rice autobiography she talks extensively about switching her major from music to Russian, and all of the various meanderings she did within that major that brought her to where she is today. It’s so fascinating, and I was wondering if the parents on here with kids who are looking at Russian know about her extensive background?

D17 took apart a computer when she was in second grade, but it didn’t belong to us. She was friends with a boy in her class and the mom asked if D could come over and play with him. I was like, sure. I dropped her off and was expecting to meet the mom, but got the nanny instead. I am not a fan of young nannies (or nannies, really), but I was literally five houses down and it was just for a few hours.

Turns out the parents were on vacation in mexico and D and her friend were left to their own devices. They found a computer in the garage and D proposed they take it apart to see what’s inside. When I picked her up two hours later the computer was in a million pieces and she had burns on her hand from trying to take apart the battery inside of it. To say I was unhappy was an understatement. D still remembers it.The parents suggested that we should pay for the broken computer and I suggested they could pay for her medical bills (I took her to the urgent care) and her pain and my suffering over being stupid enough to leave my kid with checked out parents.

Good times…

Asked this question on another board. For apps that are due by 11/1. Are they due by 10/31 midnight. Or 11/1 midnight? Not that it matters because S17 will be busy ALL day 11/1 and if he doesn’t have the apps in by then they aren’t getting in EA. Honestly if they don’t get in this weekend they won’t get in.

At least S17’s EA application are straight forward apps that don’t require LOR or anything complicated. It’s one reason why we chose them to be EA.

@curiositycat333

You have until 11:59:59 PM on 11/1 to get it done. Pay careful attention to the time zone of the school with the deadline.

@curiositycat333 I didn’t read @mtrosemom’s post saying anything about gender. Boy Souts are boys, so the kids participating were boys. So, it was fun for the boys. There weren’t any girls present.

@mtrosemom Are you aware of the scholarships for Eagles? The deadline is the 31! https://nesa.academicworks.com (We missed the deadline.)

@curiositycat333, S’s Eagle Scout project was inspired by D15’s GSA Troop’s Bronze Award project, which invloved the same e-waste non-profit (S tagged along with big sis). The girls learned about e-waste recycling and did community service by tearing down computers. They also put in enough hours to help pay for a computer to be donated to a family. So I am an equal opportunity expoliter. ;:wink:

@Mom2aphysicsgeek, Thank you for the link. No I didn’t have that info. I will look ASAP! And @STEM2017, I do not have a list of schools that give scholarships for Eagle Scout. I’ll have to try to find something. That would be very useful.

@mtrosemom if you end up with a list of Eagle Scout scholarships that would be wonderful to see for my S19.

Here’s a unique Eagle Scout project…research and put together a comprehensive national list of every university and privately funded college scholarship specifically for Eagle Scouts. It would take hours of work and lots of phone calls but would be immensely valuable to all Eagle Scouts.

@mtrosemom Glad to hear the project involved girls even if it was a boy scouts project.

@MotherOfDragons this is the third time I have posted this. I am not sure why they keep disappearing???

I did not know that about Condi Rice. What is the name of the book you are listening to? I bet Dd would enjoy it! It would be something to listen to on that long flight.
