Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@3scoutsmom thanks so much for the link, can’t believe I overlooked that!

@odannyboySF, I asked her to cough up the username and password when she set it up, in case she had any issues with her account, etc., i.e., in case she won’t turn over info to her mother.

@Kayak3, so you do have what you need to send the “correct info” to NMC? Can you get a meeting with the GC before school lets out for the holiday? I’d be very unhappy and all over this.

@odannyboySF, too funny. My S is pretty casual about sharing access with me for his college stuff (CB, ACT) and his school actually gives parents their own Naviance login separate from the student one. Although S doesn’t care if I log in via his Naviance account. He likes the unpaid research assistant work I’m doing to help him decide which schools to apply to, and he knows I won’t mess with anything in his accounts.

ETA: I suspect part of the reason he doesn’t mind me seeing all his test scores in “real time” is that his school has a program for reporting grades to parents throughout the year, so I see every single grade his teachers put in for assignments and exams. He’s used to me knowing all his academic info.

@suzy100, Yes…I was given an email address to send the correct info but was also told that I won’t be notified until Feb or March whether they made the adjustment. Thank you for your sympathy ~ I am quite annoyed! And unfortunately D18’s GC has left most of us less than impressed. I feel like half the time I am giving her more info than she is able to give me. I actually spoke with the head GC when I called (since D18’s GC has yet to respond to my 7am email about this, even though I know she is in the office today) and the head GC sounded a little stand-offish. I tried to be sweet as can be (catch more flies with honey) but she still sounded stressed. I think they know they screwed up bigtime on several (or all) of the 11th grade scores. If they had already heard about several, imagine how many more there are since parents don’t all have access, and students who aren’t at higher thresholds would never pay attention to an asterisk next to their SI.

S18 got a 1360 and a 209 so we will be looking for scholarship elsewhere :frowning: S17 also missed NMS, then got a 32 on the ACT and several nice scholarship offers due to his 32 and his GPA. S17 has a higher GPA and a higher PSAT so I am hopeful.

Congrats to everyone who got great news today!! <:-P

Hugs to everyone who didn’t, and those who are dealing with administrative issues! >:D<

We are not in the running for NM but we’re not expecting to be, so neither excitement nor disappointment in our house today.

I looked at Compass Prep’s 2018 projections and I find myself increasingly concerned that PA will rise to 222 for some reason. (It was 218 last year). Maybe it’s bc of this Admin stress, but also perhaps contributing is the fact that I looked at the breakdown of D18’s scores and she made silly mistakes (the only one she had wrong on verbal was labeled an “easy” one, which makes me think she filled in the wrong bubble or didn’t read the question). She had calculator math 100% correct and then had four wrong on the non-calculator (yikes). All of those things seem like they could have easily been correctable and would have netted a higher score since she knew the challenging stuff, so I wish her score was in a safer zone.

I have to hope 221 is okay in PA for NMSF. Anyone else worried about large jumps? And more importantly, can anyone explain WHY it takes until September for the cutoffs to be released??

D18 was very pessimistic about her math after taking the PSAT, but she is safely above the cutoff in Texas. SAT Subject tests in January and we are done with testing!

@Kayak3

Very anxious here in WA. I didn’t think DS would have such a high SI. We even talked with him before the PSAT about how difficult it would be to get a 220 (last year’s cutoff here).

He scored a 223 and now I’m so nervous that the cutoff will jump up. Of course, CC isn’t the place to go for the “average” scores, but seeing all the high 220s makes me anxious that the test was somehow easier this fall and being in the top 30k will need a much higher score than before.

Not much we can do, but know you are not alone in your stress ball!

S definitely did better on the PSAT than the ACT. I was pleasantly surprised. Now I have to decide whether to pay for some official test prep, or the old “Mom forces him to do Khan Academy and a couple of practice tests” method. I think I’ll go with the free method first and maybe some test prep for another one if it seems like it would be worthwhile.

Congrats to all the kids who did great and look to be in line for the NMS!

Congrats to the rest of us for being done!

@RoonilWazlib99, CC is definitely not a representative sample of PSAT scores. Now, if you learn that your school has seen a significant increase in 220+ scores this year compared to last year you might have cause for concern. But even so, the likelihood that the cutoff will jump to 224 in your state seems vanishingly small.

@traveler98 Logically I know that it shouldn’t jump that much, but emotionally, I’m still concerned it could happen!!

I agree - I would be pretty comfortable with a 3 point or higher score over last year’s cut off.

And DS is not one to talk about scores/grades so unless others are sharing, he’s not going to start a conversation about it. I’m hopeful that it will be a big topic at lunch and he’ll come home with good news!

@RoonilWazlib99 If it makes you feel better, I was talking to my friends (smart robotics kids) at my fairly above average high school in Spokane, and the scores were lower than on CC.

@snowfairy137 - Thanks! Don’t know why the rest of my post didn’t show up, but DS is looking at Gonzaga. We’re on the other side of the state, but all his cousins went to Prep and then Gonzaga so they have been talking it up. He went to visit last month and really liked it!

Update from GC, they “claim” they straightened it out with National Merit and that D18 should “look for an email in March confirming that.” Somehow I don’t feel 100% appeased with that but it will have to do.

Ugh, Kayak3. I would not be happy. Is there any way you could contact CB (after the craziness of the next couple days) to confirm that they have everything they need from the high school?

@RoonilWazlib99 That’s awesome. My dad and both his parents are Gonzaga alumni, its a great school. I don’t think they offer national merit scholarships though, so don’t worry too much.

@snowfairy137 - no, they don’t, but they offer a ton of merit aid. He had an interview and at the end the woman (assistant dean of admissions in charge of the honors college) told him if he applied she would personally nominate him for the Ignatian Leaders scholarship in addition to the rest of his Merit money. That’s another $6k a year. Of course withbthe cost of Gonzaga, you need all the money you can get!
