Can’t she just stay home that day?
I’m hoping so, @jprtaco. I just don’t know if it will negatively impact her or the school if she does that.
ACT composite score was exactly what I predicted, although the individual section scores were not what I expected. She will be taking it again. D18’s composite score was exactly the same as her D16 sister’s and that one was successful for admissions acceptances to 12 schools.
How much attention to you think the schools pay to the the individual section scores vs. Composite. Because her Science and Reading scores saved her butt and the English (which she did not finish) and Math (which she thought she killed…) were average at best. I am guessing more weight is placed on the Engliah and Match score which is why I think she should retake.
@suzy100 Do any of D’s schools superscore the ACT? (Assuming there is a little room for improvement.) Seems like the downsides to taking it again are minimal, unless she’s applying to schools that require all scores.
@bearcatfan I love your D’s attitude!
@droppedit We got the Yale mailer, too. Well done, I thought. All along H and I have declared that Ivies are out of the question since we’d be full pay and there’s no chance of merit. That mailer made us hesitate, though.
@labegg - from what I’ve heard, it’s math and English that are the most important. At least you have a baseline and have particular things to study and work on. Did you order the copy of the answer sheet with the questions so she can see what types of questions she missed?
Second day of college visits yesterday resulted in a no. S18 visited Purdue. He had high hopes because of their reputation for Aerospace Engineering.
To quote from his text to me, “Mom- finished up at Purdue! Not my favorite school, campus is pretty bland, and they didn’t have a great engineering lab space. Programs for engineering are pretty good, but I definitely couldn’t see myself living there. On the way to Illinois now!”
I’m glad a couple schools are starting to get the axe because he had about 25 on his list!
Will update once I get the report on UIUC!
So jealous your ACT scores are in - we are sill in “registered” status and waiting for the next release. Congrats on the good scores!
SAT scores come out tomorrow. When DD signed up for the test, she gave me the names of 4 schools to whom she is sending score reports. This morning, she told me we would switch three of them, if she could. Interesting how preferences change through the process. I am expecting more changes over the next 10 months.
Trying to help S18 find schools to apply to that we can afford! He is 28 ACT, 3.78UW, 4.03W. One sport athlete, very into DECA (ICDC qualifier freshman year, State qualifier last year and will be competing at states again in March and we hope for ICDC). He is VP of DECA this year and will most likely be President next year. Older brother is very high stats and is currently at U of Michigan. S18 does not really want to go there, would prefer smaller. Business school is his thought right now. He loved U of Dayton and LOVES Gonzaga. Wants to apply to about 10 schools. We will not get any need based aid, need merit. Any ideas of good smaller-ish schools that fit the bill where he has a shot at merit?
My son’s scores are not posted yet. For those whose kids got their scores, did they take the ACT with or without writing? The ACT webpage on score reporting is confusing. It implies both that multiple choice scores will be available and that they won’t be available until the writing score is added. When my D15 took it with writing, her scores were posted separately.
@wrights1994 where are you instate?
We will be focusing on instate schools not too far from home that offer music education, history/polysci and IST.
Need to try and get merit as well, we might get a bit of need based aid from private schools.
Look into the Colleges that Change Lives CTCL.
For business you can also look at Ohio University, Temple, Ohio State, Duquesne
Hugs to those who didn’t see the score they were hoping for and cheers for those who did!! I’m in the camp with @my2caligirls and @1518mom still waiting!! I hate this part! I guess I don’t mind waiting but it’s harder seeing others know, and still NOT know! :-S
@labegg my D had very split scores with her math and science much lower than english and reading when she took it in June. Her composite came out reasonable, but I had the same concerns you have regarding individual scores (especially math) which is why I had her take it again…
@wrights1994 the thread for parents of 2017 kids with 3.0-3.4 gpa (or something like that not the main 2017 parent thread) have been keeping and maintaining a detailed list of their admittances and merit awards. I think it’s been a few weeks since they last posted the update, but if you dig around in that thread you will find it and it is a GOLDMINE of information. Shout out to @eandesmom for doing the work to keep it updated! There is a wide range of gpa and test scores represented on the list despite the thread’s name.
@1518mom my D took it without writing this time, and hers aren’t posted yet. When she took it in June, she took it with writing and the multiple
@RoonilWazlib99 congrats on whittling down the list! Glad his visits are going well!
@1822mom Funny, we just got back from L&C and Reed and my D preferred L&C over Reed, which is a headscratcher to me, but kids… ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Pro Tip for any of you planning college visits: don’t do what I did and save some of the strong matches until the end. We’ve seen 9 schools now, some of which were just “Hey, do you like big or small schools?” kind of visits, but D is getting discouraged we haven’t found a great match yet. We have some strong match (or what I think will be strong match schools) coming up, but they’re some of the last ones we’re visiting. Which was probably a mistake.
I’m so sorry for those of you who are still waiting on scores. That would make me crazy!!
@1518mom, my D took the test with writing. Her MC scores are up, but not her essay score (which I don’t care about one bit).
@ShrimpBurrito, there may indeed be schools on D’s list that would require her to send all ACT scores. That’s my next research project. 8-|
@odannyboySF lol yes, it’s interesting to see how they surprise us in their reactions to places! :-? Even though I wasn’t surprised L&C wasn’t for her, I was surprised by just how bad their visit was. I’m not sure which factor was more problematic, the Saturday factor, or the bad tour guide factor. One thing I have decided is no more Saturday tours for initial visits unless we absolutely can’t avoid it. That is one factor at least that I can possibly control. And I’m sorry your D is feeling discouraged that she hasn’t found a great fit yet. Hopefully each visit is giving her new insight into things that are important to her, which helps find the right fit in the end (we hope). I know that happened for my D.
@1518mom it’s supposed to say her June score released MC before writing above, I don’t know how it got cut off!
@mommdc we are in Michigan…which is a huge reason why my older son is at Michigan. Not enough merit anywhere else to get it down to the cost of in state! I will look into the CTCL as well!
@1822mom… thanks for the tip on the 2017 board! I will look there!
@1518mom , my son took ACT w/o writing and his scores were available this morning. His account status showed as “tested” the day before, which I am told is a sign that the scoring is about to be released. If your child’s status was “registered” then it is not ready yet.

@odannyboySF here’s the other side of that coin.
In ninth grade, my D did a little research and declared her Dream School. It’s a match/low match and very affordable for us, so we visited the summer after ninth grade, just to get the ball rolling. She absolutely fell in love with the school, and didn’t see the point in visiting any other schools to give this first one some context. She reluctantly agreed to visit some others, but it took awhile for her to really open her mind to other possibilities.
I don’t know that there’s one best way to do this. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Eastern Michigan and Michigan State are on this list:
W and S’18 visited University of Miami Monday. W thought it was great. Medium size, good academics, big time sports, urban area but a real campus, fairly modern, lots of food choices, active student body buzzing around campus, opportunities for merit. Apparently the kids on the tour from the northeast loved the weather. S’18, thought it was ok, conceded that it had a lot to offer, but too warm and too many palm trees. The boy really wants to leave the state, but we’ll really have to work on the affordability side of the equation to make that happen…
