@bearcatfan - I can’t remember the exact date, but D18 took her school-wide ACT in Feb and it seemed like a long time went by without hearing about results. The GC said it would still be a couple of weeks before the results came out, but by that time all of the kids found out (from other classmates no doubt) that the scores were already posted online and they were all scrambling to create their ACT accounts so they could find out how they did!
I totally agree with your “red states” colleges thoughts & I was surprised to see the U. of Chicago on the list; if my liberal-minded D knew that there would be seats available because other people were avoiding the state, she’d jump at the chance of getting one as that’s her #1 reach school.
I seriously doubt though that schools like that will have any problems in filling their incoming freshman classes while also rejecting a zillion applicants just because some potential students feel uncomfortable about applying.
@pri930 - this year colleges switched to prior-prior for tax returns. So for fall 2017 everyone used tax returns from 2015. For class of 2018 you will use 2016. So you will have a completed tax return in hand to fill out forms starting in fall of senior year.
Colleges update NPCs through the fall. There was chatter on different boards about NPCs giving different results in Oct/Nov vs Dec/Jan.
LOL at anyone eliminating Oberlin from consideration because it is in a supposed “red” state. Oberlin is well known to have one of the most liberal student bodies and admins anywhere. More likely, Oberlin saw a drop in admission due to its own reputation and recent incidents, not its physical location.
Our Ohio school told me that, initially, these results will not post to existing accounts. Since they registered the students en masse as a school, that is the case. Not sure why results take longer to get on the school-wide test.
My D eliminated Case Western and Oberlin as college possibilities, not based on OH politics, but because Lebron James plays for the Cavs. :)) Big Warriors fan.
@LMHS73 - Our school told us the same thing. 3-4 weeks for results, which is longer than it takes for “regular” sittings. Most students sign up with their email address and will be sent an email when the results are posted.
We cross off a lot of blue state schools, particularly where there is talk of microagressions and safe spaces. If the schools paid me instead of the other way around, it could never be enough to send one of my kids to Middlebury or Berkeley.
All politics aside, as parents I’m sure we’re researching everything available to us to ensure the health, happiness, and safety of our kids no matter what school/state (red/blue/purple) they finally wind-up in. I watched (with my jaw agape) the video that showed a bunch of studious, hardworking kids being accosted in a certain school’s library. When I read that the administration applauded the actions of the perpetrators, that school immediately came off our list.
I already have enough to worry about without adding that kind of nonsense to my list.
@LOUKYDAD “We cross off a lot of blue state schools, particularly where there is talk of microagressions and safe spaces. If the schools paid me instead of the other way around, it could never be enough to send one of my kids to Middlebury or Berkeley.”
THANK YOU! That means more open spots for my kids. Please let me know which other schools you’re crossing off your list.
With all due respect, please let’s avoid delving into the political in this thread - even tangentially. It’s too valuable a resource to many of us to even risk taking it in that direction.
I’m curious what summer plans everybody’s kids have. Mostly for the vicarious thrill of it My D has foot surgery scheduled for the week after school gets out and will be non-weight bearing for 6-8 weeks, which I plan to enforce by keeping her on a couch or bed with the thing elevated. I am taking no chances at all on the healing process! BUT I also want to keep her occupied in some productive way while she is sitting around all that time.
Current ideas are: 1) working on her college essays, 2) working on her IB diploma Extended Essay, 3) Art project that she could use for her IB art exhibition next year, possibly even a photo series on her foot - working title (by mom) “D’s Left Foot” :)) , 4) Work on some organizational tasks for her community service project, 5) Dad’s contribution - work her way through watching the 100 best films (though what list of “best” films is still open to much debate).
D’s idea - binge watch youtube videos, or whatever catches her fancy on Netflix, and play a million hours of Sims4 possibly all at the same time. :-<
Needless to say it will be a summer of probably way too much togetherness, and she will likely emerge more ready than ever to depart the nest for college! ;))
The foot surgery thing really stinks. At least you are able to schedule it when it’s most convenient. My vote is that she does a good mix of her ideas and yours. Have her set some concrete goals and make arbitrary deadlines.
My D will be very busy over the summer, as usual, although she’s shifting her focus a bit. She has swum competitively for most of her life. She thrives on the structure. She’s made the decision that she won’t swim competitively in college, so she’s sacrificing her summer season a bit, adding in some new activities that better serve her future goals. So, she will still swim two-a-day practices, most of the time. She’ll continue to coach the younger swimmers a few hours a week. But, she’s adding in a weekend job doing some private coaching, which will make her less available for out-of-town meets (and building up her savings). She’s also going to McGill’s Summer Academy for two weeks in July, right before the State swim meet. She knows she won’t be getting best times and she’s okay with that. Since she’s pretty fixated on a #1 choice college, and it’s not McGill, she’s looking forward to a couple of weeks of playing in Montreal and dipping her toes in the college world.
D will have some summer homework, and she may start on some college essays/applications, but she won’t be applying to that many schools. She’s done with standardized testing, minus APs.
I bet all the 2018’s will be busy this summer and my D is one of them.
Besides essays and apps, my D will be traveling to abroad for 2 weeks with her volunteer group, a summer medical internship at Stanford, various hours at her year-round PT job, a TA at the local middle school, math tutor for a local tutoring business. And a week at a camp in Yosemite for relaxation. And maybe CR/AR ref a few soccer games to earn some spending money. Phew!
Summer is always so short. S will be working on his 100 school mandated service hour requirement by directing and producing a play to be performed at several underprivileged venues, then to family vacation, then to a 2 week music camp at U of Miami-Frost, then to a four week mountain away camp where he is a counselor, then we either hit the beach for a few more days before school starts or try to squeeze in another college trip. Whew!
