@CuriousInCincy My sons score posted at about 2 pm today (but still nothing by mail). Most of his classmates got theirs by mail last weekend. We’re in Cincinnati too.
I wish our district got out of school at a reasonable time of year but my D doesn’t get out until June 23rd!!! It’s pretty crazy because the kids that have a lot of APs are sort of in a weird place, so they do projects etc. The only downside is that she got into Girls State and of course it is during Finals Week so she’s a little stressed about that. With our district you are required to take the Honors version of a class prior to taking the AP version so while she’s had APUSH and APComp her Physics, Calculus, German and PreCalcTrig are all honors so she will have actual finals in those courses. I feel like there is never a moment to breathe for her. Congrats to all the kids who are becoming official Seniors very soon :).
@gclsports I hope it went well for him. My son’s score went up, so we are all happy heading into the summer.
Just catching up …
So I’d like to announce that I’ve survived my last 8th grade trip to DC (went with my 2018 grad on her trip, too). Hours and hours on a bus crammed in like sardines, an already-rambunctious class and 90-plus degrees made me go to my happy place a couple times. 8-}
The last day of regular high school here is Monday, followed by exams. They are all wearing their “senior” shirts, yikes!
Let the games begin - and, like someone said above, may the odds be ever in our favor.
Survived the week full of band concerts for both my kids. One more week of regular school, band auditions for next year and then finals week and we are done. Then TexasSon is taking the ACT on 6/10. This years Seniors only have next week and graduation is on Memorial Day weekend. Anxious for the HS to announce the dates and times for c/o 2018. We have family graduating from another HS in our district so we know we will have 2 graduations to attend out of the 5 in the district being held that day. Curious to know if we are in for back-to-back or early/late or something in between. Both schools are rather large. sigh
S has three weeks to go, but things are definitely winding down. His AP classes are doing small projects and some self-directed reading. He’ll have a final in Honors Pre-calc. His first EMT class starts the day school gets out, and a different class starts near the end of June.
He’s very ready to be done with school, and he’s looking forward to summer.
First day of summer vacation for DD’18. I asked her what she plans to do with her first day off school - she said, " I am working." She is up in the lifeguard chair as I type. I love that kid. :)>-
Its 5/19 and your kid is out of school? 4 more weeks here in NJ With APs done it certainly is chill out time academically but sports playoffs have started. Lots of awards dinners for various activities, Prom, Teen Arts etc keeps em busy
Next Wednesday is D’s last day and she is ready. She’ll have to take 2 PE classes over the summer at a local CC to check off her phys ed requirements WHICH SHE LEFT TO THE LAST MINUTE. Crazy-making.
First day of summer break here, too. D slept in, then took her time painting her nails. Fingers AND toes. ;
Basically today is the last day of school here, next week is just exams but DS18 is exempt from all of them but still has to go for roll call.
One Common App essay, that should also work for Coalition App, is DONE! Yay! Gosh knows how many supplemental essays yet to go… and a few individual school app essays too. Teachers lined up for LOR and DD is exempt from all of her finals so grades are pretty much all taken care of too! Just waiting to get the June SAT and ACT tests done and Apps to open so she can get this whole app part of the process out of the way. Really wish those May SAT scores would have been back before June test date (convinced that is actually a marketing ploy by college board to rake in some more cash…). She is aiming to be done by October (OK not going to lie, I may have actually said I will kill her if apps are not done by Oct 15.
S18 had his last, and only, exam yesterday. So he is officially off for the summer. We celebrated with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 last night. He will be busy preparing for a national classical singing competition coming up in a week, then will be getting some service hours directing a musical which will be performed at area retirement homes. Second half of summer will be more relaxing for him.
I’m just starting to make a college "to do " list for DS18 but I’m sure it’s much shorter than others here, he’s only going to apply to one school, UTD so he can start on his Apply Texas App in June, he’s confirming with teachers about rec letters next week, and I’m also working on a (short) list of local scholarships I want him to apply to.
Wow, feels like we still have a way to go here. S is busy busy and even though AP tests are done, school still seems to be constantly having stuff due. Plus he is taking his driver’s test on Monday and track is into post-season competition. Also taking June SAT.
Probably going to visit only one school this summer, and then let him send his applications and only visit the last places if he 1) gets in and 2) gets the $$. So in other words, March and April 2018 will hopefully be busy!
@3scoutsmom, So happy for S18! Go Comets!
S met with his GC today for his junior year review where they make sure he’s on track for graduation. He is. He technically only needs two classes to graduate, and he’ll be taking one of them at the CC. That leaves him having to fill four periods at the HS, which will probably look like AP Lit, AP Calc BC, Honors Theatre, and Honors Anatomy & Physiology.
He also met with a special counselor who only advises about college - where the student should apply, how the portfolio is looking, etc. That person told S that with his stats, he could go anywhere he wanted*. S replied that he would be taking a National Merit offer at UNM or Tech. Counselor demurred that OOS tuition would be expensive, and the UCs are great schools. S said the NMF full rides included OOS tuition, and at the UCs, the most he could expect was Regents for $2,500/year.
He said the college person let him go after that. S assures me that he was polite, but the counselor seemed a bit non-plussed that he didn’t want to talk about dream schools. See, he already has his dream schools. They’re just not what people usually think of when kids say “dream schools.”
*Mom’s caveat - yeah, if he had two winning lottery tickets. One to get in and the other to pay for it!
@3scoutsmom Ditto what @BingeWatcher says. Whoosh!
GaTech’s Admission blog has a nice piece on fairness and admissions:
http://pwp.gatech.edu/admission-blog/2017/05/16/admission-its-not-fair/
This is something I’m slowly beginning to understand (hey, I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer!) after watching admissions play out on CC and elsewhere.
I’m also beginning to better understand the other side of the coin: which colleges “fit” D18 the best, beyond the most obvious things. For example, I looked at the syllabus for some classes at a top school the other day. For many of the classes, the final grade was around 40% midterm and 45% final. I don’t think a Big Bang grading scheme like that would work well for my D18, who is a known procrastinator. Her current favorite school has a better grading scheme for many classes, with three big tests counting for 25% each and another 25% scattered around. Having more checkpoints along the way would work better for her.
@droppedit what a great idea re: checking the syllabus. I hadn’t really considered that. I don’t think your D18 is really that different from most kids re: procrastination and assuming they will all be getting involved in clubs, activities, sports etc once in college, making sure there is a time management fit for them is just as important as other factors. Thanks for sharing!
