Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@odannyboySF My daughter has done a couple interviews when we have visited, but she hasn’t scheduled any yet for the schools we aren’t going to visit soon, or for Bryn Mawr, which wouldn’t let her interview in April. (Had to be June or after).

She is definitely applying to Bryn Mawr, so I’ll bug her to get that one scheduled. Beyond that, there are bunch of schools on the list that we are not going to visit soon, but she is not sure she is applying to them or not. I hope if she gets the list finalized by the end of the summer, there will still be plenty of time to set up those interviews.

@bearcatfan Is that an Ohio thing? I’m not aware of it at our school. If given the choice, I think I’d leave the scores off, as others have said, so you can choose which exact ones to send via ACT itself.

@odannyboySF The biggest challenge f the interviews (for schools that interview) is getting on the schedule of the local alum who is conducting the interview. Depending in which city you live and the number of participating alumni in town, the slots are finite. So, the sooner the better.

Just read a post from the GC’s office on Naviance about timing of applications. They are requesting that students do not submit applications until after the second week of school and stress that transcripts and recommendations won’t be sent until after this date anyway, that they will be “communicating relevant information” with students during the first two weeks of school. The post didn’t say it but I assume they want to wait until after the drop add period. Hopefully they will have updated the 11th grade rank by then. They do encourage students to start on their applications and essays over the summer but just wait to hit the submit button. Apply Texas opens on July 1st and the Common App in Aug 1st.

^^^ Interesting. Our D’s high school says they mail transcripts over the summer. I guess we just get the rec letters once school starts back.

Once the dust settles from finals, we have to sit down and figure out the timing for all our schools. Yeah, “we” have to talk about “our” applications, lol.

It’s possible that all applications could be in by October 1, because most of the schools have rolling admissions. Wouldn’t it be nice to have Thanksgiving dinner with a couple acceptances?

^^ This. That’s what we’d like, too. Early apps, early acceptances, no more stress and waiting. We’re saving all of our stress and waiting for the NMF cycle. :)) :((

My daughter is planning to apply all RD, so the goal for the summer is to finalize the list and get the essay done. But she’s not going to actually apply for a while.

My D is actively resisting applying somewhere early in case she changes her mind about where she likes. (Spoiler: she won’t.)

We will be applying over the summer when applications open. We probably aren’t reaching as much as some here but we are chasing merit. Fall is crazy busy and his first choice school has rolling admissions and will send out acceptances early Sept for summer apps. That would be nice to already have in the bag.

I’m not sure if anyone was looking at Alabama due to their excellent OOS merit schoarships (full tuition for OOS with a 32 ACT) but they have changed their scholarship tiers and capped their Presidential scholarship for 2018.

http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.php

Running their Net Price calculator will still show you the old scholarship (S17 qualified for $26,950 using last years criteria) values. Using the new criteria he now qualifies for a $19k scholarship. Not horrible but not the full tuition that it was using last years criteria.

Pretty disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

@jpc763 this is getting lots of buzz today on CC - I may be wrong but it looks like they up’d the UA Scholar award to $19k/yr which is more generous than last year (I believe). Curious if these awards will now track with tuition increases yr to yr. Still a good deal but they definitely ruined some dreams for ACT 32 students.

Thanks for posting, @jpc763. Do you know if they are still offering the National Merit Finalist scholarships?

ETA: it looks like those have remained the same.

S18’s first choice is UA. Received an email from the local recruiter this morning with the new scholarship info as I had been asking her if she knew anything. I hate that they moved the finish line as S18 but at least we know what we are dealing with.

@my2caligirls I believe you are correct. I have a spreadsheet with the merit scholarships and requirements of the schools we are looking at. Last year the UA Scholar was $71904 over 4 years ($17,976). That helps because S18 got a 29 first time with very minimal prep so I would think a 30 is definitely in reach and hopefully the 33.

Ah, interesting. It looks like the NMF scholarships are also going to change. See post # 27 in this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/1994280-presidential-scholarship-requirements-2018-2019-p2.html

D just texted me & found out she’ll be getting 2nd semester “A” grades in her AP Calc BC class & lab!! I’m hoping this might make up for her 1st semester “C” grades in the same class & lab for NMF purposes??

Any thoughts on the subject that might make me worry less (or more for that matter) would be most appreciated. Those are the only “C” grades she’s gotten in HS - actually, the only “C” grades she’s ever gotten in her life! She spent an enormous amount of time on her Conrad Challenge project 1st semester and that took time away from her regular studies - she missed getting 1st semester “Bs” by mere percentage points. Into each life, a little rain must pour and all of that. I’m proud of her though for buckling down & hitting the books hard in the 2nd semester. =D>

I’ve been reading the posts for a couple of years now about how (this many) or (that many) semester Cs knock kids out of NMF contention from year to year & I’m still pretty fuzzy on the whole concept.

@LMHS73 it’s all a numbers game and the number of C’s varies from state to state and year to year.
@DiotimaDM gave a very good explanation here:

@LMHS73, does the transcript show semester grades or just final grades? Either way, congratulations to your D!

Well D is having a “work at home” day today. She became so overwhelmed with the amount of work on her plate and the looming deadlines, she begged to stay home. H & I were pretty firm in our refusal at first as we are both in the “unless you are at deaths door you are going to school” camp, but she eventually wore us down with reasoning which we’ve always told her is better than just whining. Basically her argument boiled down to the fact that the classes she has today were all going to be giving class time over to work time, which we countered with great so go to school and work!, which she countered with I get no work done there because people are constantly interrupting me and distracting me, and here is the lengthy list of things I need to get done.

So we caved but told her she would be working under strict supervision. Usually we leave her to her own devices to get her work done, but honestly a part of me feels like she’s in this situation because she hasn’t been using her time effectively. So I had her show me what she’s working on, and her progress, and I check on her every hour or so to see her progress and make sure she’s staying on task. So far so good!

@daffodilpetunia welcome! My D is also full IB! She doesn’t do her EE until next year though. I think they do it in the fall, they just got the paperwork to choose their mentor.

I’m late to chime in on the test scores on transcripts discussion, and I actually don’t know if D’s school puts them on there or not, but I do know that several of the schools D is planning to apply to will accept scores submitted on the HS transcript so that saves $$ if you only have 1 or 2 scores.

Writing essays and working on filling out apps is high on the list of summer activities around here. She’ll apply EA wherever she can, and just having the paperwork ready to go will I think be a huge relief to her as the school year starts. One less thing to worry about!

RE Alabama, looks like NMSF is Presidential so will not quite cover tuition now. But NMF remains unchanged, at least a far as I can tell.
