Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

jpc763, has he looked at RPI?

http://rpi.edu/dept/math/ms_undergraduate/curriculum.html

My son is thinking about getting a MS in computer science after he finishes his undergraduate math degree.

@bearcatfan, PLEASE do not trust net price calculators. My son’s college was $15,000 per year more than the NPC told us, even after we made sure the exact info from the CSS Profile and FAFSA was typed in. It was not a question of being out of date, it was a question of being WRONG.

He really really wanted to go there, so he went anyway, but that’s $90,000 extra we are paying than expected.

The best option, and what we will do for my S18, is to have many options out there in each college applied to category, sure thing, probable, and possible. That way, there is a real choice. ED is NOT a good option for anyone who likes their money; my S15 did ED so the FA could not be negotiated in any way.

BTW, my S18 is waiting for his SAT scores tomorrow. Do they go to colleges today, or did colleges get them earlier?

I’m also wondering, do colleges other than those he listed get his scores? Because he is getting a few higher tier colleges that really shouldn’t be contacting him based on his program and GPA.

Also - someone mentioned SAT scores not being out before the next sitting.

The College Board stated that in addition to adding August, they are also going to have SAT scores in two weeks instead of the current almost five weeks.

https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/getting-scores

Colleges getting scores as early as 10 days after the test.

Although it does say August and June will still be pretty long, more like six weeks (they still will be doing analysis, and I guess their people do need to vacation some time!)

It would certainly help their bottom line to get in people who otherwise would have been too late to retest.

@rhandco For the May test, colleges begin getting scores today. HS GCs can also access today.

As far as other colleges, they buy lists from the College Board that fit certain criteria, but do not get actual scores unless they are sent by the student. The student checks a box if they are willing to be on the mailing lists.

I am so hopeful it’s good news tomorrow, DD is tired of testing.

@jpc763 Look no further than RPI, great school for applied math, pure math, engineering. He can even take both by minoring in one or the other.

I have a question. If a student takes the SAT w/essay on October 7, 2017, according to the CB:

“Scores are released October 20–26: Your multiple-choice scores become available online during this window. By October 31: Your SAT Essay scores become available. Within 10 days after you receive all scores: We send colleges your scores, and we send your paper score report if you requested one.”

So, doesn’t this mean that if you apply ED somewhere with a deadline of 11/1, the student’s 10/7 SAT scores may not be available for your ED app?

@GoRedhead & @rhandco - Thank you! RPI sounds great, but is too pricy for S17. He will need Merit $$$ and it looks like his school needed to submit him last month for the Rensselaer Medal. From the page “Selection information for the Class of 2018 (current juniors) was sent out in March 2017. Online selections for the Class of 2018 (current juniors) were due May 1, 2017. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 15!

@CA1543 I am a bit late in responding to your question on ACT science but from my DS16 that did best on that section repeatedly and has helped others increase their score: focus on the graphs and tables more than the paragraph(s) of info with each question. Science is way more about your ability to analyze data than reading comprehension. Most questions can be answered with the paragraph and/or with only confirming your answer with info in the paragraph. Good luck!

@rhandco Thank you - I figured as much.

Several of the colleges on her list are financial safeties (and what I consider low match/safeties academically) but of course there are some that are a bit painful to stomach. Not completely out of the question, just … ouch. I am not sure how things will shake out with financial/merit aid - we will likely get something - but I am prepared for the worst. Hopefully she will love a financial/academic safety, lol.

@sushiritto, I think each college has their own policy as to whether they will accept scores that come in after the app is technically due, so I’d check with each school.

@bearcatfan, when I ran the NPCs for older D and compared them to FA offers, I’d say they were generally in the ballpark with what I expected, but they did vary. They all landed within a $10K range of each other, but that $10K mattered! (These were schools that used FAFSA and others that required the CSS profile.)

For nursing I would look at the program, opportunities for clinicals, NCLEX pass rates.

^you should be able to look these up by state/institution, but I can’t seem to post link to pdf file

Here to vent a bit…my daughter got the dreaded call to the guidance office due to major scheduling issues for Senior Year. Her initial plan was to take: AP English, AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Economics, AP Art History (for fun lol), AP German, Wind Ensemble and PE (required). Unfortunately due to the major conflicts and her insistence that playing the Horn for 8 years and acquiring the position of Principal Horn for her Senior should not be given up to take AP Physics (note she is taking Honors Physics currently) AND she also did not want to give up her 7 years of German language to take AP Bio and AP Chem was a direct conflict with AP English…she’s now in a Dual Enrollment Honors Anatomy and Physiology w/ Lab (D/E with Seton Hall University). She also could’t work out Art History. New Schedule: AP English, AP Calc BC, AP US Gov, AP Economics (full year), AP German, Honors Anatomy/Phys, Wind Ensemble, PE. This still counts as 4 years of Lab Science but she’s worried that it will hurt her chances at competitive schools never having an AP science. Note that she is ALL OVER the board on what her major will be…typical of a 17 year old but Environmental Science and/or Chemistry is on the board. But she IS sure that she wants to study a foreign language for all of college, most likely double majoring in either German or Russian (which she does a college self study currently). Any thoughts?

Beyond that on pins and needles for SAT scores. Hoping they are in fact released tomorrow. She is hoping to see a 100 point increase, I am just hoping for no meltdown. This end of year stress is killing all of us haha.

Hmmmm, has she had any Chem yet? Maybe swap out APChem for the APEnglish and take an honors English? Or her GC could note in her recommendation that she couldn’t take an AP science class due to scheduling conflicts.

She’s had Honors Bio, Honors Chem and Honors Physics…and did well in all classes. She’s being stubborn. Apparently this Honors Anatomy class is incredibly difficult, kids say it’s harder than AP Bio who have taken both. I don’t know what the solution is…she does not want to go into engineering or computer science other than I think all bets are ON haha.

Thanks suzy100…as for College Prep English it’s a no go…for Jr and Sr year at our HS they only offer AP, College Prep or other. Unfortunately in our district there is typically only one section of each AP course. Not a terribly large school and can’t accommodate more than 1 period of each thus so many conflicts. :frowning:

I think it’s really important for kids to choose their courses based primarily on what they want to learn rather than how it might be perceived by colleges. Good for her! It sucks when scheduling doesn’t work out so that she can achieve both goals, but her commitment to language and music is great.

Will she get a “most rigorous” check mark on her schools report? If so one course selection shouldn’t override that, I wouldn’t think.

My D18 also has major scheduling conflicts. I am probably going to pay for her to take AP Calc BC and AP Computer Science online, scheduled at her school as “independent study”. And that’s just to fix her schedule, the school actually has AP Calc BC, we just can’t make it work.

@mommdc We are on it. We are staying in state but have sifted through the direct-entry BSN programs and have a list of 8 that are pretty good. Varying degrees of passage rates, but that’s to be expected. Thanks!

We haven’t been able to actually see the senior class schedule yet - guidance counselor says to call Monday (he’s not lying, he’s a straight shooter). I know what she requested, and she should get those classes, but it’s always interesting to see what the computer scheduling program comes up with.

We don’t get any clues about class schedule until a few days before school starts in August. If there are conflicts, you scramble the first day of school. :frowning:
