Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

So we finally got list finished for apps this summer. Volleyball starts with camp last week of July then full bore starting August 1st. Trying to get as much done before Aug 1st to avoid delays. Only 7 total on list

  1. US Naval Academy reach(app in scheduling physical and working on Noms! Recruited athlete)
2a) SMU Match/Reach: chasing merit and athletics $
2b) Colorado School of Mines: Match/Reach Chasing merit and athletics $
  2. Texas auto admit chasing honors and Merit
  3. TX A&M auto admit chasing merit
  4. TX Tech auto admit chasing merit
  5. UTD auto admit safety guaranteed merit
feeling pretty good with her list and she has been working on essays, LORs, and Noms for USNA for a while. All except CSM are ApplyTX app which is very easy and only have to enter info once and can reuse. All TX schools are auto admit as well so it will be the Academy first then best package of school+honors/athletics+merit$$ as we get offers.
    looking forward to the fall!

At the moment, S18 will be applying to the following schools:

CalPoly SLO - good match and such an easy application! Not sure if there will be a possibility of a scholarship from them, so not counting on it.

Colorado School of Mines - we’re thinking of this as a “possible” school for him even though he is an auto qualifier for the $14,000 OOS scholarship to cover out of state tuition and make it the same as in state tuition. We are hopeful he will get an invite to the Harvey Scholarship program as well.

Georgia Tech - Reach. Hoping he would get invited to be in the running for either Provost Scholarship or maybe even Stamps.

MIT - Pick a name out of a hat reach

Stanford - Pick a name out of a hat reach

University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign - Possible - would hope for either Provost or Stamps here as well in addition to Honors program invite

UMich - Ann Arbor - Possible and would hope for Honors College and scholarship

UW Seattle - Match, but his major is a reach even with their new freshman admit policy for this class so if he doesn’t get into the major when he gets his acceptance, he will not attend

University of Wisconsin - Madison - Match - Hoping for scholarship money as well

Virginia Tech - Match - Hoping for Honors Admission and scholarship money as well.

S18’s college process so far is organized chaos. He has 2 separate lists…a list for his sport and a list if he doesn’t play. He doesn’t know what he wants to study so colleges that make you apply to a certain school are stressing me out! He has no idea what he wants to write his essays about and I’ve brainstormed a few ideas with him and nothing seems to spark him. He has 5 weeks left of summer before fall sports start, 7 weeks until school starts. He works as a waiter at a private beach club. This is his 2nd summer there, last year he was a busser and they promoted him after one summer which is very rare. He is taking a ridiculous amount of AP classes next year but it’s what he wants to do. The next few months are gonna be rough in our house!!

Ooh I wish I could post a full list for S!
So far I know:
Oklahoma NMF money, safety
Trinity match, chasing merit (could do sport)
Miami of Ohio match, chasing merit
Stanford crazy reach
Washington U reach, chasing merit
Vanderbilt reach, chasing merit
“Maybe more” according to him!

@keepmecruisin My daughter was very similar…she had Service Academies, then D3 schools where she could play, then larger Universities. We’ve crossed off Service Academies…and only one of her D3 schools is left in the mix. But I totally get it, they have to determine how much they want to play…it’s very stressful for them (and us). Best of luck to him. My D18 is feeling the same crunch as fall sports have started already w/ summer leagues and weekly practice/weight room BUT…full swing is 2nd week of Aug and hoping she has her summer work AND essays done by then.

Thanks @AmyBeth68, the admissions process is not for the faint of heart but the recruiting process may send me over the edge. S has had 2 of the Ivies say they would love to have him on the team if he can get in on his own. I was like “yeah, ok, thanks for that.” When push comes to shove, if he wants to write their essays and give it a try, I will pay for the application and to have his scores sent. I hope they use my donations wisely lol.

@keepmecruisin I hear that…on her recruiting page an Ivy coach just recently reached out … same story. Her scores are good but we all know how this game goes with Ivies. Anyway, I think she’s starting to think that focusing on education and joining a club team might be her preferred path. But…it changes week to week it seems haha.

Woo hoo! UT Dallas acceptance in hand! It was funny how it happened. S had set up his UTD student portal account, and I asked him today if he would show me around the portal; I told him I wanted to find the key areas where he shouldn’t take any actions without talking to me first (such as accepting admission). He was playing a game and offered to log me in and let me look around on my own, and I could just alert him to the areas as I found them. When I got to the applicant page the first thing I saw was a message with the offer of admission. We laughed about me seeing his admission before he did. Of course we knew he was auto-admit, but we were both still so happy to see it officially. Sent a happy text off to H who is traveling for work, and we’ll have to figure out something to celebrate this milestone. My baby’s first college admission!

On a related note, how are you all planning to handle the access to the online portal when your students go to college? The financial stuff is all in the portal, so it seems like unless the student is 100% on top of things with money then the parent should probably have access, but it looks like all the grades go in there as well (I’m guessing many or maybe most colleges are like this now). I don’t want S to feel I’m micromanaging his college grades but I don’t want any financial issues to fall through the cracks either.

To date I’ve not gotten any kind of application fee waiver. One free mug and two free t shirts, but no fee waiver. I even asked if she got one by attending a tour/preview day and was told no.

Financially I don’t need one, but it would be nice (and I’m kind of jealous since it’s nice to save a couple bucks, lol).

For my D15, I have access to her portal. When I was having separation issues freshman year, I used to check where she ate and how much meal money she was spending…I don’t do that anymore lol. I respect her privacy but if there is something going on with the bill, I can handle it myself. She is busy and this way we don’t make a mistake inadvertently. Plus I get wifi access on lots of college campuses bc I know her password

D got a letter from Tulane offering to waive her application fee & there was an email (I think) from UCF that said any NMSFs should call the school & they’ll waive the application fee. That’s about all we’ve seen so far - other than a deck of cards from Oregon? I can’t quite remember.

@traveler98 - I guess it depends which school she winds-up at. If it’s a case where I’m taking care of money issues from my end, then I’ll need access to her portal. I’m just to anal that way & don’t want any mistakes or surprises. She already knows that I’m not going to be monitoring her grades & all of that any longer. I told her that college will be her show & she needs to take care of her responsibilities without me nagging or hovering over her.

And congrats on the 1st acceptance!!

When my D was a freshman, we did the housing application together and I offered to enter all of her immunization dates into the online portal for her. But I don’t have her password. She took care of course scheduling and her subsequent housing applications herself.

Her school has a separate bill access portal for authorized users. I can sign in and see the account snapshot, pay the bill and print statements.

S15 stayed in our area for college, so I didn’t have to think about much in the way of medical insurance and all of that. After looking at a couple of college websites, I’m now confused on what to do about medical for D18 - like how are the kids covered when they travel outside the country and all of that.

Any thoughts on the way to go here? Do most parents buy the school student insurance policy? Some of them look pretty pricey, so I want to make sure I factor that into the budget so it’s one less surprise later.

I have access to D16’s portal and will expect access to the boys as well.

Our kids are on our insurance policy so no need to buy one from the school. For study abroad OU requires you to buy a specific travel insurance for a $1.18 a day when out of the country but this was waived for DD’s current internship because they are paying the German National health insurance for her as part of the internship.

D15’s portal for grades is different than the one for financial aid. I do not have access to her grades portal. I also have her on my insurance policy so was able to waive the school one. I think we pay a small fee for her to have access to the student health center - which she has used more than I’d like!

I have access to D15 financial portal. Also to grades but I never look there because only final grades are posted and she has usually told me those by that time.

Wow, things are heating up! I skipped a day and I think there were 4 pages of posts!

My D is working this summer, so happy about it, but that means no college visits over the summer, and a really jammed fall.
@he@heli

Ok - learned a new trick this week. On Monday, DD’18 was invited to visit a friend at the beach. I said, “what a bout work?” She said she talked to her supervisor who said she could switch shifts and have the time off. So then I said, “well, if you can finish two college assays by Friday, you can go.” BAM! She finished two more college essays this morning and submitted her second college app.!

iPad problems, sorry. Want to thank helimom74 and everyone else for all helpful information.

@LMHS73 There is no application fee for anyone applying to Tulane…I just did a whole post about it being false/misleading advertising and promptly got handed my hat by the senior CC community!

From the Common App Portal:

Application Fees First Year Domestic Fee- $0
First Year International Fee- $0
