@RelocatedYankee my D15 is starting pharmacy school in the fall at Pitt, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
She was fortunate to get a good merit scholarship at Pitt, and we are instate. She qualified for the conditional admission as a freshman and that was great for her, she only had to submit one pharmacy school application.
She also applied to Duquesne, and their scholarships are good for 6 years. But Pitt was always her first choice.
Some other schools to look at for good pharmacy programs and merit are UToledo and Ohio Northern.
UNC CH is competitive for admission, but even more so for merit, but they do give need based aid I think.
The pharmacy program OOS tuition is >$40 k though.
Don’t hate me because I am done with campus tours.
Had the last one today. Not sure if it is campus fatigue or my inner princess coming out, but I was kind of grumpy the whole time. It was very humid out, and we had a 1.5 hour walking tour (which honestly is the longest tour I’ve been on - most are about 45 minutes). We were offered water when we were done, but dang that was a long hot haul.
@bearcatfan Love the Thunderdome analogy! I also love how @3scoutsmom 's school handles limited parking; letting the Juniors decide which 2 out of 3 semesters is a fabulous idea.
@RelocatedYankee I"m a pharmacist and have a pre-pharm student working with us this summer. She goes to Purdue and is stressing about her application. Butler here in Indiana, I believe, has a guarantee entrance into pharmacy school if accepted into pre-pharmacy as a freshman. You might want to check them out.
Essay work? Minimal.
Talked to coaches re recruiting? Minimal.
Campus tours? 1. (Vanderbilt–now his favorite.)
Arranged senior schedule? No.
Applied for parking? Yes! Phew, at least 1 thing accomplished.
@katstat1 Thank you! Any advice relative to completing pre-recs at one undergraduate program and then applying to another school’s PharmD program? I Don’t have a sense of how many students the Butlers of the world accept from other schools.
DS18 is back in the nest as of this afternoon, home from five weeks of the KY Governor’s Scholar Program. He had an awesome experience! So glad he got the opportunity to go. About 350 kids from all over the state on his campus. I could tell today as he said his goodbyes that he made all kinds of new friendships. (I joked with him that I have never saw so much man hugging going on at one time ) Of course they won’t all end up at the same school, but if he ends up at one of his in-state options (especially UK, but also Centre or U of L) there will surely be a contingent of GSP kids that he will know from this summer, which would be a great bonus.
Another thing that was obvious is that he has lost the nerves about being away from home. I could tell he is really looking forward to the real thing next year.
Only one more full week of summer to go for us. We will see if he begins to attack the applications next week.
If she is sure about pharmacy and gets some merit somewhere, then a 2+4 early assurance or 6 yr program is probaly best. The merit helps with the undergraduate cost because the last two years will be pricy and full pay or loans.
I would start with instate programs, then private and merit opportunities at OOS public.
Budget related topic i promise: i am a day 1 reservation holder for a Tesla Model 3. With the first cars being delivered tonight and my estimated delivery date of early 2018, I am very excited… but also extremely nervous. The reveal is going to hopefully finally help decide wether this is a feasible purchase.
We have budgeted for having two kids in college but with S15 going a year early and S18 possibly getting into schools where the out of pocket expense is based strictly on need (and the laughable amount above free cash flow that actually comes out to), the funds haven’t matched up exactly as we expected. So now, on the eve of the reveal of my dream car, i am a nervous wreck thinking about making a large purchase in 2018, even if its been a years long wait to get here.
I think I will feel extremely guilty if I push S18 towards high merit over stretch schools that meet 100% need and then turn around and get the car. I mean… I have always been up front with our boys about our budget and that some schools may not work out based on costs alone… (we said we would cover the cost of whatever the out of pocket expense would be of attending an in-state public assuming they received bright futures… and those funds would be used wherever they decided to go) but it would still make me feel like I have failed somewhere along the line. Ugh. This is supposed to be a magical night!
@rwmannesq lol… over my cold dead body! The extended range is awfully tempting. See, if I am “stuck” with standard range, S18 would have to attend a school closer to home. Getting the extended range is really about giving my DS his freedom, right?! The premium interior is so we can… uh… study the stars through the glass roof. Yeah, education expense confirmed!
Nah, we are empty nesting with S18 so having to adjust what the new normal around here with budgets and transportation and even just hobbies/obsessions is going to feel very weird no matter what.
Maybe you should justify it to yourself as an example of “if you work really hard in college you, too, can have all this some day.” Got to give the young ones goals.
@RelocatedYankee I would recommebd going with early assurance program or doing pre-pharmacy at same school he would want to go for pharmacy. I think they are more likely to take from their own school rather than transfers in.
So question…son got a 4 on the AP English Language and composition test. For senior year, he’s registered for dual enrollment English. My issue is that the AP score will get him credit for the same classes as the DE English. Thinking he should take DE Literature instead, but he would have to take it at the college since only the regular one is taught at his HS by a college professor. Also don’t know if the school would let him. It just seems like a waste. He’ll have to have another English credit to graduate and could do the easier Honors English. Anyone run into this?
DE English. I guess if you didn’t score well on the AP, then it would be good. But in his case the 4 gets him the credit he needs. He would take two semesters of DE English, so college English I and II. And, no, Lit isn’t offered. Neither is physics, so he took it over the summer this year.
