Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

So true, @LOUKYDAD !

Happy Common App roll-out day, everyone!

I know OU gets most of the press for NMF scholarships in Oklahoma, but Oklahoma State has a very nice package as well. A friend whose son is likely NMF visited both OU and OK State this summer and took the potential NMF tour at each. Her son actually loved both schools, and according to the link below the OK State package for NMF is going to be very nice for our 2018 kids. Unlike OU, OK State is still offering full OOS tuition waiver.

DS was trying to rollover his common app account this morning and had issues. Did it work for anyone else? It won’t let him set up a new account either.

He did get his U of L app submitted though (not a common app school, they have their own online app). I think it was pretty simple. That’s one down at least!

We are hoping that UNM’s program will survive intact. UNM enrolls far fewer NMFs (e.g 15) than places like OU, Bama, etc., which means it’s a much smaller line item in the school’s overall budget, hopefully less worthy of notice when cuts are being handed out.

@LOUKYDAD

DD is having issues with her rollover as well. They fixed the first issue and received an email to try again. Now it gets stuck on the 4th step of the rollover, the type of registration. She notified them of the issue. Their response…we are working on it try again later this afternoon.

DD is not a happy camper. This is, of course, is my fault…if only I hadn’t made her create an account early… lol.

She just needs to decide if she should use the Coalition App vs. The Clemson Online App for Clemson, which opened today. Her Coalition app is open and ready to submit.

@bearcatfan what kinds of things were on your fact sheets? Last night I was looking at a couple of schools’ common data sets to see how many big classes are at each school, to see what are the most popular majors, what is “very” important vs important or considered in the school’s decision process (most notably, some schools care about interest while others don’t, and some schools care more about ECs than others), and to try to figure out just how much of a boost at each school applying ED would give you. The last thing is really hard to figure out because I can’t see how many of the ED kids are unhooked, and I know that at most schools the athletic recruits are in the ED class along with some other kids.

This is very particular to nursing but we had: Direct admission details/GPA to keep, whether they superscore, application process and any merit deadlines, interesting stuff, tuition/COA/NPC, campus life which included #students, housing, religious services and stuff like that, and where clinicals are and how many hi fidelity mannequins there are.

Not a lot of that would be applicable to you if you aren’t doing nursing. Some of it is mine, some of it is from my daughter. They are just kind of cheat sheets to keep the different schools straight.

It is interesting that OU was impacted (somewhat severely) and OSU was not. They are both governed by the same BoR right?

When we did our summer touring, OU was as far out as I felt we could make it given our time constraints. I regret not adding the extra time (it would have required an additional day to our trip) to make it to Stillwater.

We looked at OU and Tulsa on our Oklahoma swing. Somehow Tulsa just did not show well. Didn’t consider OSU–not sure why now.

At this point, we are trying to find good merit from D3 schools where my son could run. Trinity TX for sure. Washington and Lee? Grinnell? Denison or Wooster? Would love to hear if anyone has been to these.

DS really woke with a head of steam today. Alabama app submitted - two down, three to go! There will be more work on know on honors and scholarship apps, but it feels good that he is at least knocking something out.

The other three schools are common app. DS reports that the common app account rollover works now, and Cinci and Centre questions are up and loaded, so he can work on those later.

Woot! Woot! for DS of @LOUKYDAD ! Just got to knock 'em out one at a time.

Happy Common App. Rollout Day to everyone!

DD’18 has 8 schools on her list, only 2 are Common App schools >:P

The Common App site keeps crashing. Ugh. This is especially harrowing when trying to keep 2018 son on task.

Guess I’m glad S is not ready to start common app?

@Booajo , I actually ran at Washington & Lee many moons ago. It has a great 5 mile cross country course on its back campus (Telegraph Hill still gives me nightmares). Outside of the Johnson Scholarship, which although they give out 40 a year is still insanely competitive, there is not a lot of merit $$. Financial Aid is great though, if you qualify.

I am now fighting with Parchment. Well, I think it’s the high school’s fault but they will never admit it.

I registered my daughter using the school’s access code. A filled out application popped up with my daughter’s school email. But … I think the email is wrong, and she never got the confirmation email so she can’t sign in. Through some sleuthing, I figured out that the school considers her email to be xyz.org. But the actual school email she gets email at is spelled out. For teachers and admins it doesn’t matter - they get emails at both. Maybe they did something hinky to to the kids’ emails. All I know is I sent out test emails myself, and the xyz.org email consistently comes back. I’m hoping Parchment can go in and change her email somehow.

The transcript lady at the high school is going to upload her transcript (without that low ACT score, yay) and let me know when she does it. We will see what, if anything, she sees on my daughter’s account re: email.

ARGHHHHHH. At least I am doing this early. I’d be flipping out if I needed this information sent today.

He switched browsers from Chrome, with some success.

@HeliMom74 Sorry you are dealing with glitches. You guys could do what my DS did. Called it a day and went to hang out at the pool.

We visited Trinity at one of their all day open houses. I don’t have a ton of insight, but said before they “knew what they were doing” that day and my S was very comfortable there. He will be applying and hoping to compete for top Merit Scholarships (very competitive).

@HeliMom74 I was having trouble with my parent account, but was able to get in this afternoon on Firefox.

My daughter hasn’t tried hers.

Oh, and … we decided to keep the ACT on the transcript. It turns out they had all of them, not just the state one. That means the good ones were on there, too. That wasn’t made clear to me. So, they have them all on there now and I’m okay with it.

And … I took a picture of her transcript. She’s now ranked 50 out of 370. She went down about 20 points thanks to not taking a full AP load. Still very respectable, in my book. Her GPA remained the same though. Weird.
