Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

What’s the average depth of the OK quakes? If they’re shallower, then louder makes a lot of sense.

What’s scary is that OK earthquakes and tornadoes sound similar. Sheltering for the two events is very different.

2-5 miles, on average. I think.

Quietly slips OU app to the bottom of the pile… :-S

DD16 is moving into an apartment in Norman OK and I made sure she had earth quake coverage on her renter’s insurance!

@vistajay The OK quakes are small ones, usually 4 or under. Here in CA, it’s got to be 5 or more to even get our attention. Even a fiver is usually just a dish-rattler as long as it’s a low 5.

They are smaller, but since they’re shallower, we can feel them. A ~4.0 will wake me up at night.

Yeah, a good 4 will wake you up, but over here we roll over and go right back to sleep. Kind of like “Was that a quake, or did the cat jump on the bed?”

Woah, @HeliMom74 that’s crazy re: the earthquake insurance premium!

@DiotimaDM @ShrimpBurrito , I kid. My D15 goes to college in L.A. and I live in hurricane country, so some earthquaking would not deter us! Tornados, on the other hand… 8-X

The 1989 Loma Prieta (Santa Cruz Mountains) earthquake was one that got my complete attention, but the 4’s and 5’s are pretty “meh.” They’re usually quick with little or no damage. For me, 6+ will get me to focus on where the exits are. But honestly, earthquakes seems so rare here in the SF Bay Area. I haven’t felt one in a very long time. Knock on wood.

@katstat1 Aside from rolling admissions, it can depend on the school, but for most schools the answer is: not at all. AOs are too busy on the road in the fall visiting schools, doing college fairs, etc to be reading applications. They collect them all and only start to go through them during “Reading Season” (Nov-Dec for EA/ED, Jan-March for RD).

First app done for S18. He got a letter from Montana State with no LOR, no Essay and a 2 week decision. He filled it out and submitted it last night. Montana State was not on any list we had talked about. Go figure.

D18 got home from first day at school and was giddy. She got her favorite teacher for AP Lit. I don’t know why he’s her favorite (and the favorite of every kid in the school it seems … when he shows up somewhere all the kids going running to him, calling his name). I know he makes the classroom fun but he grades hard and piles on work. He is one of the few male teachers who isn’t a coach of some kind so I guess there’s the novelty aspect. However, she’s only had him for one class in the past while her other teachers (all women who she has mostly had for several years) have opened up great opportunities for her, especially the Biotech teacher who sort of took D18 under her wing during the troubled 10th grade year all the way through this year. I don’t get it! Don’t get me wrong, she is thrilled that she has “all her favorite teachers” for this year (great!) but the special attention for the AP Lit guy is really missing the big picture. The Biotech teacher changed D18’s life.

Hey,
Since Common App now allows students to write about whatever they want, couldn’t my D use an Apply Texas essay (Topic A in this case) for her Common App essay?

@droppedit what is taught in a biotech course? How is this different from biology? Is this this where they teach you how to work in a bio lab?

My S HS counselor said earliest they have transcripts etc ready for students in September. I think it’s unfair that if a student has everything ready to go in August, that they have to wait for their HS.

I need to find a way to keep myself from continuously refreshing UK’s scholarship page like a crazy person. Sorry you guys have to keep hearing me vent about this!

@CB04 same at our school, the reason is they want to wait until after drop/add is over so they don’t have to make corrections in case kids change classes

@melvin123 – the biotech class focusses on genetically manipulating microbes (with a ton of lab work). I’m getting way above my pay grade trying to explain it so I’ll just throw out some terms I’m familiar with: PCR, gel electrophoresis, modifying plasmids, etc. Under this teacher, D18 went from a kid we could barely get to go to school two years ago … to a kid who went to StateU for an biotech internship this summer (the teacher encouraged D18 to compete for a spot)and won the award for best presentation at the end, had the prof saying he wants to be her interviewer for his Top 15 university, etc. She’s certainly my favorite teacher!
