Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Question about Naviance - when D18 linked her common app to Naviance, the schools she marked as EA in common app still show RD in Naviance with no way to change it. Anyone have this issue?

@Pri930 We have not got that far, but one thing that really irritates me about Naviance is the way application dates are posted. It could really mean kids (without obsessive parents) missing priority dates for scholarships. They really need to fix that.

I even had a GC tell me not to worry about EA and priority dates because they don’t matter for admission.

Admission is the least of my worries.

Agree @MACmiracle
Naviance is worse than worthless for me. It is counter productive. The implementation and features the school uses is incomplete at best, and incorrect at worst. It is frustrating.

Agreed regarding Naviance…it’s not helpful at all.

When discussions with children don’t go as planned…
Started a discussion with son about what he really wants out of a college in the hope of identifying a few more schools for him to apply to (only has four on list) that ended with him cutting two (doesn’t think he’d ever accept an offer from either after really considering what he’s looking for.)
Now there’s only 2!
:)>-

Don’t worry @BuckeyeMWDSG were a one and done family here. Just make sure one of those two is an assured admit!

One and done here, as well, though I insisted that S apply to his second favorite, too, just as a backup.

Another one-and-done here @BuckeyeMWDSG. If you can afford both schools on your S’s list and he would be happy at either and he’s sure to get into at least one, then you know he’ll land in a good place. There’s still plenty of time for him to add schools to the list if he wants.

My older daughter was a one and done. She knew where she wanted to go, it was a safety/match with guaranteed merit money and the program she wanted. I didn’t push her to apply to other schools…she was stubborn haha. Anyway, it’s worked out very well. She’s a happy, busy Junior who has been incredibly successful. I guess she really did know what was best.

@snowfairy137 Sorry, didn’t mean to smear ya! I just didn’t want to go back to that thread. I might have posted to it. I thought it better to not return to it.

The mailings are coming fast and furious, many of which have schools with local info sessions. But they’re so many and they range from San Jose all the way to SF and over to the East Bay.

D and I had a good talk last night. She’s down to 20-22 schools (5 are UC’s) on her list. 8-} A lot of reaches, a few targets and a few safeties. We’re going to have pare down some more, but thankfully, on her own with her GC, she got rid of several I thought were bad choices. I keep pitching Vandy and Nashville, but she told me she doesn’t like country music. =)) Oy vey!

As for Naviance, for whatever reason, all of the functions are working properly for D, her school and D’s GC. And I love those scattergrams. Though I realize they’re likely a bit on the positive or happy side of reality.

Lastly, I signed D up for the October 7 SAT date last night. She told me she wants to take the Spanish subject test for the heck of it. Just another early Saturday morning for me and it’s 30 minutes away this time, since everything else is booked locally. :((

S hit the button for his UK schools today, using the British common app (UCAS). Now it’s on to American early action deadlines. Hoping for some news before the holidays to take off the pressure.

@labegg. My son is a DPT. Absolutely loves his career. Awesome to get into a program that is start to finish. Sons application season to PT school was stressful and expensive as he landed a couple of interviews thousands of miles from where he went to undergrad.

Each time S18 gets a fee waiver enticement, I start justifying his application to that school even though it was not on his initial list. Latest one is Sewanee. I am thinking, “Why not? It’s free!” I might need a 12 step program to resist, were it not for the fact that S18 has completed 0 applications to date, and is already showing signs of app fatigue. He will not take kindly to my trying to talk him into adding schools.

I’m a bit envious of those whose kids are so focused in their college search! Six months ago I thought that might be my D, too, but now her apply list is all over the map, both literally and figuratively. Every school on her list offers something that is important to her. All of those “wants” don’t exist at a singular school, so she’s got the bases covered piecemeal. :stuck_out_tongue: Every now and then when she’s talking about her colleges she’ll say, “But I can only go to one,” with a touch of panic. She’ll eventually have to decide which of those “wants” are most important to her.

Big news of the day at our house is that D has declared she won’t register for the AP Chem test. =D> She’ll have enough going on in May–she doesn’t need the extra stress, especially since she likely wouldn’t use those AP credits anyway. I can’t talk her out of the Physics AP test (she’s loving the class!), but I’m glad to see D making some logical decisions.

Still frustrated to not have received official notification. It is nice to have confirmation from our insider but while others are working on their essays and apps and whatever else it is NMSF candidates have to do to apply to be NMFs, my child is still behind the starting line. How can the NM board think this is fair and equitable?

I had a question on the Common App I was hoping someone could clarify for me:
If we are applying EA for some schools and RD for others, we need to submit the application before the Nov 1st EA deadline. Do we have to have all the RD portions completed correctly at that time? Or are we allowed to modify the supplementals and short answers for the RD schools until their later deadlines?

^^When you fill out the Common App, you will name the schools that you plan to apply to. When you do that, if that school requires supplemental information, you will see that as you go through the application for that school. When you are finished, you will hit the “apply” button and it will be only for that school. So hitting apply doesn’t send your app to all your schools. So, that’s a long way of saying that no, the apps for the RD schools do not need to be ready when you apply to EA schools. Hope that makes sense!

I guess I should caveat this by saying that this is how the Common App worked a few years ago and I assume it’s essentially the same today.

@dowzerw, your student is not behind the starting line. The application isn’t due until October 11, the essay prompt is out there, and from all reports the application is quick and easy. My S hasn’t gotten his notification either. Most international students will not have received theirs yet. Hundreds and hundreds of NMSF in Harvey-affected areas aren’t even back in school yet, let alone have gotten their notifications. There are plenty of schools just here on CC in which GCs refuse to give out the information until September 13. In reality your student is ahead of the game, just as mine is, because we know they are NMSF and we know the essay prompt. Even in S’s school that promotes the PSAT, every year there are NMSF who have no idea what NM is all about. I guarantee there are kids in his school who will have no idea about NMSF until the GC informs them, and I guarantee they will still have plenty of time to fill out this easy application. Your student, and mine, also have the benefit of parents who know we can call NMSC as soon as those press releases come out on September 13 to get application login info if the school still hasn’t released it. I get it, the NMSC process is unnecessarily drawn out, but at the end of the day 15 out of 16 NMSF make it to NMF. The hard part is over and there is plenty of time between September 13 and October 11. Your kid isn’t behind.

Thank you @suzy100 that makes sense

@dowzerw
While I agree the approach NMSC takes to NMSF notifications is absurd, and certainly frustrating, I don’t think you are at all “behind” the starting line, particularly since it is not a race.

The application itself takes a few minutes because it is a recycle of things you have already done or will do (for the common app for example). If the essay is a concern, it’s topic is well known. If sending scores is a concern, you can send them now. The balance of the items are up to the school, and there is time after September 13 for them to do what is required.

It’s the type of thing that is frustrating, to be sure, but also they type of thing for which fretting over is a waste of time in itself. Every year, thousands of kids get notified on “September 13th”, and simply complete the tasks and submit with plenty of time. Folks on CC are the exception to the rule, in my opinion.
