@labegg I hear ya! I didn’t know about the shooting at GA Tech but there was a shooting near campus at University of South Carolina this weekend, in the Vista restaurant section of Colombia. 8 people were shot, some are critical. It’s so nerve wracking!!! The alcohol deaths are terrifying to me, you can preach to your kids to make good choices but it’s so easy to over-indulge in alcohol when you’re young and inexperienced. My heart breaks for these families, the young man that died last year at Penn State was a fairly local kid here in NJ and was truly just a stellar kid who made a bad choice followed by a lot of other kids making equally bad choices. So so sad.
D18 just checked her SAT ll Bio score…800!
Wheeeewww!
Doing the happy dance here. :bz
Congrats @Astro77 !! =D>
Hugs @MACmiracle I feel for your D. I doubt there are words that will adequately console but I hope she’s able to see it for the blip on the radar that it is very soon. After all, this time next year this will all be forgotten and she will be settling in to her new college home! >:D<
Last night, after the struggles of the day D confessed that part of the problem she was having was with the school. This particular school got added to her list without the thorough review she gave all the others because of its location and size. Now she’s looking at it more closely and second guessing it. I actually don’t like this school at all for her but I am trying to keep myself neutral as she debates it. It’s hard and even though I don’t like the school for her I don’t necessarily think she should take it off the list. I know how things change and options are important. She’s going to think about it more this week and swears to me this isn’t about the extra essays. We’ll see. :-??
So does anyone know/suspect that their kiddo is posting over in the HS Class of 2018 thred?
I know that mine as admitted to coming on CC once or twice, but does not have an account.
When the acceptances start rolling in what are your plans? Will you wait for Accepted Students Day and have your child decide which event/day they want to attend or will you do visits on a quieter more typical day at the college? I’m torn on this, I know there was a thread last spring that addressed this topic. I am personally leaning towards re-visting her top choices in a less hectic manner, making a plan to go to the college and stay overnight, have her get in contact with a professor to sit in on a class and discuss their programs? I am concerned that all the Accepted Students Days will be close together and a bit hectic, I’d rather she see the school when it’s more routine vs the dog and pony show.
Happy Dance! DD’18 ran a fast 5K in her first XC meet of the year . . . she wore a big smile as she was congratulated by her teammates. She was really happy, but I could tell she wasn’t too surprised as she has been injury-free and worked really hard this summer. Then, this am, she woke up and checked her SAT - big boost - and said, “How did I do that?” (She didn’t study nearly as much for this sitting as she did for her earlier test.)
We took advantage of the 4 free score reports, but had to send out several more at $12 a pop.
I have spent all last year opening any college envelope that comes in the mail. Now, I have to start restraining myself. There is a big envelope on the table now addressed to her from one of her top choices … it’s hard to tell if it’s propaganda or any actual decision information.
The last time she got an envelope (from another school) it was to let her know they received her application. What a tease. 8-}
I do have the log-in information for everything, including her email. It’s hard not to check …
@glido So, I have to ask. How fast? Please no worries if you want to keep it a secret, but I love hearing about someone’s athletic endeavors just as much as their academic achievements. While I’m not strictly a runner, I do run, though I’m not like super-fast. ![]()
Congrats to everyone that took the SAT or SAT II’s in August.
@AmyBeth68 Probably a mixture of both Accepted Student events and typical days depending on D’s schedule. I’m just hoping D gets invited to a few Accepted Student days. My D is still waffling on her early decision choice and she claims there’s no perfect college for her. ~X(
@labegg oh no way is my D on here =)) I’m pretty sure she thinks this place is just for obsessed moms :-"
Congrats @glido!!
OK @bearcatfan is the school a rolling admit school? If not, it’s probably look book. If it is rolling, then you have something to think about. I wish you luck. I’d be feeling the envelope, holding it up to the light, etc. But I have no self-control 8-}
@AmyBeth68 I think it will depend on scheduling honestly. Fortunately, the majority of her schools are EA so we’ll know most by the end of the year which will give us ample time to plan and spread out visits. But I faced a similar quandry this fall with 4 schools on her list that she hasn’t seen yet but are in driving distance. Take her out of school to visit during the week, or take her to one of their weekend “Preview Days”? We’re opting for the preview days just because it will be easier. One of the preview days we’ll be going to is at a school we did take her to on a regular day last spring so we will at least be able to compare the experience. I think it’s just a tough call and going to depend on what works.
@suzy100, I’m back to report. Strange results verified. I suspected that her math fell since she can have a hard time finishing the math sections. But it stayed the same as last time. The entire drop was in the verbal part. The part where she has always scored in the 700s. Still not sure of the breakdown as this is just based on a convo we had in the car in the way to work. But weird.
Anyway, it’s helpful because if anything I was worried about the math specifically because she wants to study science. So if her math stayed fine, that is a good sign to me. And the verbal was a fluke, whatever the cause. And I was never worried about those skills in testing or in real life. So she might not get the best merit opportunities (or she might), but she will be fine going forward.
Another Common App question for the experts…
Does DD have to fill out all supplemental questions for all colleges she’s applying to via the Common App before hitting submit? She has some supplemental essays ready but some not and is anxious to apply to the ones she has finished. Is it an all or nothing submit button? Thanks in advance!
@kayak24 You submit by college.
Accepted Students days were an integral part of my D15’s decision making process. Yes it can be a dog and pony show but it’s also a time to check out the kids who will potentially be the freshman class with you. We found a much more specific program planned and what is emphasized and what isn’t is telling. You also get more details than what you get at a regular visit. While it was hectic to travel to them, I am a big fan of accepted students days.
Thanks so much, @snowfairy137
And I am assuming that once you submit your personal statement on the Common App, you can’t change it? Or is that wrong?
Shhhh. Can you guys keep a secret?
We have three college acceptances!
One is to a university but not yet to the nursing program - that admits after the first of the year, separately.
One is to a university that is in her top tier. She got a phone call and an email (and a nice merit award!) but a letter will be coming soon. We hope it also includes information on the nursing program, since it is rolling to both.
Another is to a university that is also in the top/middle tier and is to the nursing program as well.
We are waiting on three that start review in October, all of which I think are rolling. Another is rolling to the university but nursing admits after January. It’s frustrating when some of these programs keep you hanging, but patience has never been my strong suit.
As DD danced around the kitchen, she sang “I’m going somewhere, I’m going somewhere”. =D>
Congratulations @bearcatfan !!!
@bearcatfan - Woot! wonderful news!
@kayak24 I haven’t tested that, but I’ve heard you can change your personal statement for each college if you want. Most people don’t.
@bearcatfan that is great news.
We have an early acceptance to the University of Pittsburgh. My DD has a very ambitious college list and we live in a part of the country where this process is horribly competitive. While Pitt is a safety, she was so happy about the acceptance though and would be happy to attend - its a nice psychological boost. We know so many kids who aim too high and get shut out.
@Kayak24 : You submit the college applications one-at-a-time via the Common App. My kids submitted them one at a time, as they finished them. They loaded up all the personal data, loaded in the Common App essay after it was written and edited. Then added college specific supplemental answers and essays one-school-at-a-time: wrote them in WORD and then loaded them up and edited all the spacing issues on the common app software. Best of luck!
