Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@planner03 and @droppedit, you both are right. D’s score went up just by one point to 34, she is just happy that it didn’t drop down as she knew it is not going to be great, she said math was horrible and seems like she is true, her math score fell down to 31. She is debating to take it again or not, any benefit in taking it third time?? her desire is to go to a private school with scholarship.

She got admission at Olemiss, just need to apply to Barksdale honors college, she is a NMSF , likely she will get full tuition.

@bearcatfan. I too wish DD20018’s guidance counselor were more responsive. GC has had the common app requests since August 1 (USC since since mid July) and still no movement on her end of things. She did call DD in last week to ask her if DD’s brag sheets and resume were done in Naviance, because they won’t do anything until they are, the brag sheet and resume have been done since the end of school last year. This GC tried to pull the same thing on DD2016 saying “you haven’t finished your naviance info so I can’t do my end” . In both cases things were done. I am not sure why she doesn’t check before she calls them in for a meeting. This time she actually told DD she doesn’t like working with non- Common App/Apply Texas schools and asked DD if she was sure she really wanted to attend them?! (This would explain why she never did finish DD2016’s app to Rennesselar…)

I understand these large public school GCs are waaay overloaded and with the hurricane here I am sure ours are taxed to the extreme. If I calculate correctly they each must have around 600 kids, about 150 seniors, each. We do have a College Center that is staffed by 2 people, but honestly I am not exactly sure what they handle beyond AP test registration, finding proctors and scheduling college admissions reps for visits (which by the way we have had none so far this year). I plan on addressing how the whole college admissions process is handled with our school district after DD graduates.

@planner03 I would spend the extra $12 and send both if it makes it a 35. At the end of the day, another $12 (per school) investment on a college education is a drop in the bucket. You don’t want to wonder if spending another $12 would have made a difference.

For the record, it’s $13 now. :expressionless:

@labegg, do you meant that the GC just didn’t finish an app for your other daughter? What happened with that?

I’m not going to get really pissy until sometime next week. I’ve emailed, let’s see if she responds. If nothing by Monday, I will call. Most of the schools do not require her input, thankfully.

We are just. Burnt. Out.

@Bearcatfan yes, the GC never uploaded the letter of recommendation from another teacher or GC school report my DD kept following up with her all the way through December, DD eventually gave up because she had started receiving acceptances from schools that were higher on her list. Maybe it is a good thing because I have trouble spelling Rennselaer. I fully expect this counselor to not finish DD2018’s application to U of SC.

The evidence continues to mount, indicating S isn’t as interested in McDermott as he thought he was before the NMSF notification. Unlike @3scoutsmom’s S who was even more energized about McDermott after he learned he was NMSF, in my house the McDermott app progress has come to a screeching halt since the NMSF notification last week. If I weren’t comfortable with S being one-and-done with UTD and had to shepherd him through more college applications I think we’d both be miserable right now. He’s doing great in all his classes and he’s got three ECs going right now with a fourth in the works, and he even went to homecoming with a group of friends (he’s never gone before). He just seems to be done with writing personal essays.

@labegg, I’m giggling over here. It’s Rensselaer.

Exactly! Took me a while to master Marquette, where she eventually landed!

@labegg - That is something I’d be going to the principal over. You already have evidence she never finished one for your older daughter.

I’m a little nervous about this one, I’ll admit. I know it’s only September, but …

Update on the college odds. My board has become even more boring.

UTD: 100 percent. S insisted on putting UTD as his first choice for the NMF application, and wouldn’t even consider putting “undecided”. H and I have permission to buy and wear UTD shirts, and I can get a garden flag. Car decals are also allowed although I don’t know if I’ll get one. He hasn’t accepted his offer of admission in his UTD portal yet but he’s had a busy couple of weeks. Probably this weekend he’ll accept.

Things here are rolling right along. S has started rehearsals for A Christmas Carol, and he’s super stoked to be part of a show again. He takes his written driving test tomorrow morning, and he has an all-day, out of town theatre field trip on Saturday.

He hasn’t started the NMF application yet, nor the Elks MVP application, but we have a tacit agreement that we don’t talk about that sort of thing on rehearsal night, so I’ll wait until Friday to bring it up. (Rehearsals are M, T, W, and I’ll leave Thursday eve. for celebrating if he passes the test at the DMV.)

I checked in with Texas Tech, and they say they never got his HS transcript that was mailed back in June. I asked them to double check to see if it was a matching problem since the transcript arrived before the application window opened, but we might have to request another one. I’m not too fussed over it since TT is his backup school.

We were supposed to head back to ABQ at the end of the month for a re-visit, but it would mean missing two nights of rehearsal so S put the kibosh on the trip. We might reschedule, or we might not. S is certain that’s the school he wants, so it’s not a make or break thing.

Congrats to everyone who’s been accepted recently! Isn’t it a relief to have one (or more) in the bag?

How many times do I have to tell my D to write a thank you note to the university representatives that come to her school? It’s like getting her to write thank you notes for gifts received at a birthday party many years ago.

Every time I read “college odds” posts from you folks, I have to smile and laugh, because I have no freaking clue. None. She did remove two BIG TIME reaches from her college list yesterday, though their removal makes me sad. :((

Last night, she tells me she not going to apply to CSU and I had a “hissy fit.” I told her that it’s a huge mistake to take SLO off her list. She said I didn’t know what I was talking about. Eventually after a round and round, she said she’s not applying to Colorado State. :open_mouth: What? That school was never on any of our lists. This is the reason we hired a private GC. %-(

@sushiritto - do we have the same daughter?

I think we are making some progress. Very very slow though. I think he has a good shot of getting his list down to 10 schools. Right now 8 for sure to apply to, and 4-6 maybes.

Big trauma here right now is that he is injured and it is negatively affecting his favorite sports season. So sad because early season had gone GREAT. Might actually help him figure out how much he cares about continuing his sport in college though. (Trying to find the up side here.)

I think we’re all feeling the September stress…common app was submitted for one of her schools (top 2 are done, 1 is an acceptance). But she still has two more with a total of 4 additional supplemental honors college essays, I can’t even push her or bring it up right now. She’s in a pretty big AP Calc BC meltdown at the moment. First exam finished today and she texted me that she’s positive she failed it. :frowning: Yikes. She’s normally a strong math kid, but this class seems to be by far the most difficult one yet. Beyond that our odds have changed again…i’d say 70% Pitt, 20% UDel, 10% the other two. If she had the financial package from Pitt already, and they hit her target, I’d say 100% Pitt. She’s burned out, we’re burned out lol, only two weeks into school :confused: I feel your pain @DavidPuddy .

@DiotimaDM very exciting about Christmas Carol…my older daughter is a performer, in college now, I always get excited thinking about the shows :).

@keepmecruisin True about the cost.

Still this process creates such paranoia and S thinks, "well if I send the old score to show them the 36 in Science I am also showing them the 32 in Math, plus I am showing them that I took it twice and couldn’t improve.

@amominaz Sometimes it feels like the Twilight Zone in our house or some parallel universe like in the original Star Trek.

@booajo So sorry about the injury; I can only imagine how that is impacting him. I hope he’s able to heal and get back out there. I
