Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Two steps forward and one step back.

First app submitted to State U with no essay required. It was a late add to the list by D, and I think it was a good choice given her big smile once we hit the submit button. It’s the mental boost she needed. We also are seeing a green check for one teacher LOR received. Caused D to break out in the happy dance! Now we need 2 more teachers and GC to weigh in.

On the flip side, D has decided her CA essay needs major reworking. I agree it needs a little more polishing but nothing drastic. So hard but I’m trying to step back and keep quiet and let her work it out. Ugh.

Finally got something completed! NMF application. But minimal progress on applications. Suddenly he decided to study for SAT Subject tests this Saturday. Truly anything is better than essay writing I guess.

Planning on a REA application only plus some allowed EA and rolling. REA does limit him a bit.

@DiotimaDM what a day! Glad the girl is feeling better! And sorry to hear about your S’ DMV issues. I think it’s a right of passage.

@Kayak24 I wouldn’t be too surprised if they stopped doing tours shortly before finals. You don’t want prospective students looking at Stressed Out U.

@DiotimaDM, that is a seriously crazy day. I’m glad your son is ok.

No early decision here but some non-binding early action just because of the deadlines. Most are rolling admissions, so we know about four already. I won’t name them yet, but …

College #1 (this is a heavy favorite): Admission to U with merit, waiting on nursing decision in a few weeks
College #2 (a close second): Admission to U and nursing program with merit
College #3 (the “why did she even apply” last place college): Admission to U, waiting on nursing decision until January
College #4: (not out of the running, but not #1 or #2): Learned through the portal that admitted to U and we assume to nursing (they send both in one letter) but nothing in the mail yet

Waiting on three more. One she doesn’t care about, one she’s curious if she’ll get in (slightly reachy) and one that could be a nice fit but not as nice as the first two.

I guess you know your kid really likes their first choice when they say “yeah, I know the freshman dorm is the pits” (and it is!) but they don’t care.

Congrats @bearcatfan on all that great news for your D!!

Last night D finally finished draft 3 of her CA essay. It’s rough, but it’s a lot better and it’s under the word count. #:-S she sent it to me before even proof reading it herself! Which made me feel less bad about saying it still needs some polishing, because she never polished it! So there’s cautious optimism around here.

She’s feeling motivated these days because one of her schools sent her an email about a new automatic for stats scholarship they offer that she will qualify for. It’s large enough that it makes this school affordable for us. $-) She was pretty excited/relieved to see that, and it seems to have added some fuel to her tank that was running on empty.

Meanwhile my younger D22 has decided to apply to a creative arts school for HS and needs to prepare a writing portfolio and statement of purpose by the end of the month. So now I’ve got 2 kids I’m chasing through apps this month! :-t

@DiotimaDM - what a stressful day. Glad to hear the girl is doing okay.

Couple of happy updates:

  1. S reports that the girl I was worried about was at school today, so she’s fine. She and one other were carried out unconscious, but all seems well with them today.

  2. S got his acceptance packet for Texas Tech today, though he’s unlikely to go. Even so, it’s nice to have a back up in hand.

  3. Yesterday’s incident confirmed for S that he wants to go into disaster medicine. He says he was absolutely in his element and this is what he wants to do with his life. Thus far, he’s been a bit adrift as far as undergraduate majors go, but now he’s leaning toward Public Health, which UNM offers. He thinks it will be flexible enough for both med school options and non-med school options (e.g. MPH), and there’s a disaster medicine focus that overlaps with some of the EMS courses he’d like to take anyway. This probably means psychology is out as a major, but it was only ever a placeholder, so that’s cool.

He even has a new take on any essays he may need to write. We (including S) were on the last cruise out of New Orleans before Katrina, so S is working on an essay about how his life has been a series of disasters.

Congrats to everyone else who’s making progress on applications and getting responses back. Go, Eighteeners!

S has the common app essay done. That will be 4 schools. We sent his SAT scores today.

@DiotimaDM such good news today! That’s great that your S has reaffirmed his direction. And his CA essay, that could truly be hysterical.

CalState application question - my DD took this past summer a class at Cal Berkeley. How/Where does she put that in in CalState application and how does she turn in the transcript for it? Thanks a lot.

@msatoor - We just came across this same situation earlier this week. Under Academic History there’s a Colleges Attended section, add UC Berkeley and enter the coursework details. If the class satisfied an A-G requirement then be sure to designate it.

For the transcript, you’ll have to call the schools you’re applying to and see how they will accept a college transcript from a freshman applicant and whether they require an official copy or not. Every school seems to have its own requirement. You will either have to have Cal send it directly, OR order an official copy to be sent to you, which you will keep sealed and put in another envelope and send off to the school, OR if official is not required, scan a copy and upload or email directly to the admissions office.

If the class doesn’t satisfy an A-G req, I’d probably skip the hassle of sending it.

@msatoor also just had the same situation on CSU Apply Now app - pretty sure you also need to be sure to select that you are applying as a high school student but have taken university level classes - this question is on one of the first couple pages of the app and think it may populate the section of the app that lets you add “Colleges Attended” - that was what we were told. Add your college there and course details under “Transcript Entry”.

Also, even though you can go in and update the A-G list, I was not able to get the college classes to show on the A-G summary page under G. @Veronica123 did you have this issue?

Grades are self reported and transcripts follow after acceptance.

Longtime lurker here. Learning so much by reading! Will likely not be a prolific poster but will hang around!

DD18 has one acceptance in. She is on fall break so hoping to finish up a few more.

Whew, S18 has one in-state/OOS (DH and I living in different states temporarily) admission, 3 CSU apps submitted, and 6/8 of his LAC Common App schools submitted as of today. All that’s left is 2 “why us” essays and he’ll be done! What a relief. <:-P

@DiotimaDM
My DS a D. P. T has a BS in Community Health Sciences. This course of study gave him tremendous flexibility.
While still in undergrad his plan was apply to PT school, plan B was to get an EMT cert until he got into PT school.
Fortunately he got into PT school immediately.

He is now contemplating PA school as he would love to do both. EMT addresses his need for the adrenalin rush that those positions tend to have.

Your sons choice of Public Health should give him many options as well as exposure to many avenues. Congrats on a decision.

I spent the morning re-Tetris-ing S’s possible college schedule to factor in a possible major in Public Health. It’s a good thing I did because I discovered that I’d overlooked that a psych major has to have a minor to complete the degree. That’s 24 more hours. Oops.

What we have now is a schedule where something’s gotta give. He wants the following:

  • paramedic certification, takes one full year of coursework, plus a summer
  • theatre involvement, either through coursework or as an EC
  • a major in psych or public health, psych is 35 hours plus a 24 hour minor, PH is 48 hours plus a 12 hour focus area
  • some coursework in EMS / disaster medicine
  • required pre-med classes

He can do a psych major, a theatre minor, pre-med coursework and paramedic and still fit maybe one course in disaster stuff.

Or he can do a PH major with a disaster focus, pre-med, and paramedic, but this means no coursework in theatre.

If he splits the difference during his freshman year, taking a class or two in psych and a class or two in PH, he will have to pick up some hours over the summer or he’ll have to give up the paramedic year in order to make everything work.

He can take Honors versions of any of his classes, but he doesn’t have any room at all for the really fascinating, interdisciplinary classes offered by the Honors College itself. If he wants those, paramdeic’s gotta go.

Still a lot of great options for him, but not the easy-peasy, do everything you want, sort of schedule I thought he’d have before.

@SnowflakeDogMom Thanks! As of yesterday, he’s intending to major in PH with a disaster focus. I’m keeping psych in my notes as a backup because we haven’t yet talked out that it means theatre has to be EC-only, and then only if he has time for it.

Tetris is right, @DiotimaDM! Remember the good ol’ days when course catalogs were not available online? So much simpler. :-<

I’ve been looking at degree requirements for D, also. She has circled back around to favoring UBC. I suspect it will stick this time, especially since we will visit again in March, right before she has to make a final decision. She just needs some free time to finish up her UBC application. :expressionless: That free time is getting harder and harder to come by as swim season is ramping up. Oh, and she needs to get accepted. Minor details!

She says she wants to major in Cognitive Systems, Linguistics stream at UBC. It’s a huge major. @-) 74 credit hours, not including pre-reqs and general ed requirements. :open_mouth: She wants to take lots of foreign language classes also, and study abroad. She will have 47 AP credits going in, but she obviously won’t be able to use them all. She may even have to take some summer classes to fit everything in! But hey, summers in Vancouver aren’t too bad.
