Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@1518mom, I just checked one of D’s EA schools, and FA documents are due 15 days after apps are due. THANK YOU for making me check on that!

I amend my earlier statement. @Kayak24, now I’m sweating it.

We had an amazing college visit.

It was the only school that D asked to visit, and it checks off a lot of boxes for the things that are important to her. But I’m still processing her desire to only apply there and nowhere else. @-)

With maximum merit, it will be possible with federal loans. But I will insist on at least one instate public safety, just in case.

I still think she should look at two other similar schools to get a sense of the different vibes, maybe just so I can feel we covered all our bases.

Omg @suzy100 I just had a swift increase in heart rate after reading that. I initially thought you meant 15 days after you submit the app, but reason to hustle it up nonetheless. Thank you for that example of a school’s policy!

DS just got his official acceptance to UTD (it took a little while because he was waiting on approval of a the application fee waiver) he is an auto admit anyway but still nice to have it be official now:-)

My D is a combination of a perfectionist and procrastinator, so early app submission in her world will mean 11:45 PM on 11/1. ~X(

I got a little “huffy” with her last night, but it’s very difficult when she works late into the night and gets up early to work some more on her homework. She has too many things going on at the same time. And the deadline is looming and she’s rewriting one of her essays.

@Veryapparent Our school has a heavyweight process, and one aspect of it is that the brag sheets were due to recommenders some time last month if they want any letters for ED or EA. I am hoping that the heaviness of the process means that stuff gets in on time. Nothing is in from the schools or recommenders yet.

You know what’s crazy? Our school didn’t have them available until the end of September AND counselor had to email it to parent because school won’t pay for paper to print. I tried to get my stubborn kid to use a generic one but she insisted it would not be accepted. Her one teacher who has responded is just using her resume draft to write it. Its called how to make a parent go insane!

@daffodilpetunia - our school is the same way. Hard deadline of 9/28 if you needed anything on 10/15.

Ugh, DD has an literature teacher this year who delights in setting his students up to fail. Paper is due on Friday, and he is positively crowing when he tells them everyone fails the first paper. He will pre-read, and make comments for improvement. Her first pre-read got a 7/25. Her second pre-read got an 8/25. The highest pre-read she’s heard of is a 12/25.

Teachers like this make it hard to explain to her that literature can be fun and interesting 8-|

Congrats on it being “official” @3scoutsmom !! <:-P

Everyone else… :-SS ~X( I’m right there with you. Between my D, her school, and my D communicating (or not) with her school, I think I’m going to end up with an ulcer from the stress of worrying if this is all going to get done in time. And now I get to add “the system may be overloaded and glitching on the last day” to my worries! %-( We do have her scheduled to be DONE well before then, but this girl has already missed some of the self-imposed deadlines we’ve set-up so… X_X

I sent her ACT scores to her EA schools last week. So the part I have control over is done. I guess it’s time to start figuring out how to let it go into her hands… :-j

It is really hard to let go…but I think with kids these days even the uber responsible ones, they tend to think that things magically happen.

Hi-still waiting on my child to finalize his essay for the CA. Can I still send score reports now? I feel kind of antsy yet useless but if it is silly to send before they get his CA, then I wont. input? thanks.

I’ve been sending the scores 2 months before the due dates. Some of them do take a good week to be received.

@manykids2000 - yes! Go ahead and send scores and transcripts if required and if your school has it set up where students send their own transcripts.

Our S18 sent his scores and transcripts to all schools (even regular decision ones) a couple weeks ago. He sent one app around the same time, but then four more this morning and still has seven more to submit. The school will set up a file/account for your student when they start receiving things.

You should have your student keep track of whether or not things have been attributed to the right account once you have access to the portal at the school.

ok thanks all! Glad I asked. His transcript requests he put in, GC needs to send those.

Total rookie question here:

How does the student know when the transcripts, test scores, recs have been received by the respective schools?

Is there a central location (D’s school uses SCOIR) or do you need to follow each school’s portal?

DD worked on another app over the weekend and finished it up and submitted it today during her lunch break! She is so very different to our first two. That is 8 submitted and 1 acceptance in hand (w/ merit) from a safety. She has an out-of-state cross country meet this weekend, so she added a college visit to the itinerary!

@Kayak24 The colleges send info about how to log on to the schools portal once the application is recieved.

@3scoutsmom , is it then common practice for students or parents to follow up in each portal and keep an eye on the submissions? D has a classmate applying to 20 schools. I can’t imagine keeping up with all of that, let alone the essays! [-(

Another rookie question? What triggers the transcript? If it is being electronically submitted by counselor I guess you have to give them a list of schools? Counselor is writing the recommendation and I assume getting it on common app? Wouldn’t they automatically send if they were posting recommendation? How does this all work?
