College of St John/St Benedict. I keep thinking it could be a nice safety, but he says no way. Even got a recruitment letter from coach for his sport, still no go.
For my D16, it was Augustana.
Oh, and University of Chicago of course for both of them.
Vanderbilt, UChicago, & U of Denver - TONS of mail from all three. Also, Vanderbilt usually sends her items in triplicate, whether it’s a card or a big book - 3 of the same item come every time!!!
Lots of college mail for us today also - got the big W&L envelope & a big envelope from Rice & then regular type marketing items from 9 or so other schools.
Notre Dame began Freshman year before any others and continued for most of HS but has slowed this year, ironically, unless it just seems that way as other schools have joined in due to age logistics. Reed seems nonstop. I don’t even know what state it’s in or why they send so much mail.
D just doesn’t get that much mail. 3-4 a day tops, probably a recent average of 5-6 a week. She hasn’t actively opted out of mailings, so maybe it’s a regional thing? We are in a fairly rural zip code.
Hmmm schools that send us the most stuff without D having expressed interest? Case Western, Kenyon, UChicago, SMU, Smith, UDenver, UTulsa.
Tulane, Pitt, WashU, and Rochester send a lot, too, but she has visited all of them.
Re: The marketing from schools we’ve shown no demonstrated interest…we get a lot of material from Vanderbilt, U Chicago, U Minnesota, U Rochester. I’m amazed at the extent of the mailings and the quality of the booklets and pamphlets. We’ve even gotten some phone calls from a few of these schools. Oddly the schools in her top choices, where she visited and has shown a lot of interest send far less materials, including Pitt @S18D20mom haha. I wonder how they determine their marketing targets without demonstrated interest? Fascinating!
D18’s mail comes in waves. I’ve seen quite a bit from Northeastern lately and a bunch of postcard-type mail from others. I think she’s getting more email now. That’s probably more effective for kids these days and it also lets the marketing people know when you click on the links.
We get Pitt too! Almost daily it seems! The other 2 are Kenyon and LSU (Geaux Tigers!). She has absolutely no interest in any of them. But I think it’s interesting UDenver is on some of your lists. She has visited there, but gets very little from them (she decided not to apply, but they don’t know that!).
I love hearing about which schools are sending your kids things. I’m absolutely fascinated by why schools send things to which kids. Obviously they buy a list of kids who score in various tiers (I was surprised that Rice bought the SAT2 list), and they target kids who have visited them, but beyond that I don’t know what else they are targeting. My D isn’t interested in LACs, and has received very little from any. I think Reed maybe twice and a couple of others, but not many. She gets a lot from U Chicago and its all beautiful(how much do they spend on marketing?), and from Notre Dame (I’m sure that’s because she checked Catholic on standardized testing). But I don’t remember her ever getting anything from Georgetown, for instance, or any other Catholic schools except Fordham and one she visited. She also gets from U Denver a lot and she’s never been and doesn’t remember ever clicking on anything. She’s gotten a few things from the same schools everyone else mentioned, but nothing from Rochester or LSU. I think the one we were most surprised to see was SUNY Binghamton.
I can finally answer the question on how many school D is applying to: 12
2 safety schools; 4 match schools; & 6 reach schools. But (truth be told) even her matches are kind of reachy, but that’s OK with me.
One of the safety schools is a National Merit school & she could take advantage of that if she moves on to NMF or (if not) the school offers enough merit money (based on test scores, etc) to make it very affordable for us.
Wow - 12 school applications seems like a LOT to keep-up with; I don’t know how those of you with more than that keep-up with it all - you must be VERY organized!!
Does anyone know how to tell if a counselor has finished their portion of the Common App? Right now it says the GC has “started” it on October 5 (if you remember my long story, my DD submitted it on 9-1).
Will there be a checkmark by “counselor recommendation”? Do the colleges start processing without the GC information if they see it has been started?
The early action deadline is December 1, but I impressed upon the GC that interviews start in November so the deadline is really ASAP. Ugh. It is so worth applying to schools where you can bypass the guidance counselor …
We"ve been getting a lot more mail lately too. We get a lot from Case Western which she has no desire to even look at. Also, from Vandy. Get the most from Trine. We live fairly close so maybe that is why but she has shown no interest. We are catholic and live close to Notre Dame but haven’t gotten anything from them. She has decent stats but apparently they aren’t interested. It is interesting to see what’s in the mailbox everyday.
My daughter has started unsubscribing from the dozens of college emails she gets a week. Some of them say on the bottom that they received her name through the ACT … so I think for my second one I will have her check whatever box says “don’t bother me,” since older DD didn’t apply to any schools that sent her rejection-bait emails.
In terms of regular mailings, Case also sends my daughter a lot. Granted, she contacted Case first and now is on a major mailing list. She will get the occasional piece of mail from other places. It all goes into recycling.
I have the same question as someone asked earlier…
Is a resume really required on the Coalition App? This may get UMD scratched from D’s list (we haven’t visited anyway).
