Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

The historically curious global citizen.

The self-aware theatre nerd.

The (dreaded) bright well rounded kid with the sweet, funny essay.

The socially aware nerd who just wants to bake cupcakes.

The smart people-pleasing artsy kid

A well-adjusted intellectual kid who believes in being heavily involved, seeks out leadership roles, and throws his whole self into all of his activities.

I am loving these descriptions! What a wonderful bunch of kids we have!

I’m loving it too - great idea @labegg!

Talk me off the, angry mom ledge.

Sent the edited, nasty but nice, email to GC (with a bcc to the head GC). I asked 2 specific questions. GC sent a response to me in under 1 hour, fastest response ever, but this is what it said…

“I will meet with DD today. Thank you for your email.”

Yeah, that is it! Didn’t answer my questions. I am completely annoyed now. While I understand this is DD application process. I asked the questions about transcripts and naviance requests, not my DD. You don’t just ignore my questions because you know you can bulldooze my kid in a face to face meeting.

It will go to the prinicpal now, so angry.

@labegg I have been having an issue for 3 weeks trying to get answers as to why the GC was saying the transcript and GC LOR were sent to Udel on 9/28 but Udel keeps emailing me saying that they never received those two documents. GC said it was sent via Naviance. Udel insists it never arrived. I left it up to my D18 to sort out at first, but she was in limbo between both her GC and the college. Finally I stepped in, reached out to both and yesterday after a few frustrating emails from both of them, the reality is that Naviance is not functioning properly and that was the issue. So the GC has sent the items via email attachment and awaiting word from Udel that they’ve been received. I’m wondering if the Naviance issue isn’t national vs just an issue with our school system? Figured you might find this interesting.

My D: Globally conscious Field Hockey playing Russofile who speaks German and plays the French Horn.

Really enjoying the short descriptions of all these wonderful kids!!! Now my very nosy question, what are they all planning to study in college or are they undecided? Mine is going in as a double Economics and Russian Major with a German minor/certificate. But honestly…as is typical of many kids this age she has changed her mind about 4 times over the past year alone! Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Chemistry were all on the board at one time or another. Russian and German have been the steady interests though.

@@amybeth68. I did find that interesting and helpful!

Future selfie-seeking sports medicine doctor without a bedside manner but with extraordinary penmanship. :))

More mail this week from ND, ASU, UofA, etc.

Last CA essay finally re-written. We’re coming down to the wire and D will be REA’ing and also submitting a couple EA’s for public OOS schools. Plans seem to be coming together at the last minute.

Earnest, strong, sensitive, animal-loving girl who does everything with gusto and has a killer backhand.

So I am wondering how many of you parents out there helping your kids with the application process? Ours is an extreme procrastinator who does everything the night before. So I have been filling up the applications requesting score reports and transcripts waiting for him to write the essays. I do wonder if I am doing the right thing here since there isn’t going to be anyone next year when he is in college. On the other hand it is really hard for me to see him mess up things and fail. This has already happened with the NMF where his essay had a few grammatical errors. Any such mistakes in college apps would be disastrous I guess. Sorry for all the venting…

@labegg I’d reply with “what time will that meeting take place, I plan to attend so that all the matters will be resolved by the end of school today” The reply from GC was dismissive, I hate to be dismissed.

@ak200008 I don’t do anything other than ask occasional status questions. My DD with one exception (Berkeley) has refused to apply anywhere that requires additional essays. She has used common app and I have had nothing to do with the process. She wrote an essay on the fly this week to apply to UAH honors college, she didn’t keep a copy, I never saw it, she just told me about it.

I struggle with how much intervention is too much/not enough intervention. My DD drew a line in the sand long ago that basically said “Mom, back off, I got this” and I respect that (most of the time). Every once in a while I have to shut my trap and bite my tongue but overall, she has got this, on her timeline and I stay out of it.

My DS was a bit more of a plodder and I was more involved although he only applied to one University, no desire to apply anywhere else and my BFF was the head of perspective students and held our hand thru the entire process. She followed along all the way thru to commencement where she arranged “special guests” (front row) seating - His experience was easy start to finish.

@AmyBeth68
DD started off wanting to major in Astro-Physics, then she switched to Secondary Education with an emphasis on English/Language Arts. Now she is vacillating between Astro-Physics and English but all under Secondary Education. Would not surprise me if she became a high school physics, science or math teacher.

My DS started off undeclared - he went undeclared until he was a Junior. He thought he wanted to be a Physical Therapist but along the way he dabbled in Political Science, Premed and Law. In the end, he is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

A smart, well-rounded shoe-lover battling a long term foot injury.

I’ll add @AmyBeth68 that she is very undecided. She has a few fields she knows she doesn’t want, but gets very stressed at even the idea of narrowing down the list. She’s going for mostly small schools with a smaller set of majors, so that will help narrow things down for her! :))

@ak200008 I consider myself D’s executive assistant for college-related matters. I have done data entry on some apps, mostly just those that require entry of courses and grades from off her transcript, I help her set deadlines, know what deadline are approaching, and I was in charge of sending score reports. She’s in charge of her essays, her common app and interfacing with her school (and oh man does that part make me nervous!! ). I absolutely share your concerns about letting them do it vs letting them fail and what will they do next year? etc. Honestly, I think there will be a learning curve, and I am working on passing more tasks in general off to her this year. And I do make sure she understands exactly what I am doing for her, so she knows this is a unique situation, and she is grateful.

@labegg I positively have hives reading your trials with your GC. It is probably too late, but I would text my D to have her call me immediately when she is called to GC and put me on speakerphone during the meeting so I could also be there. No hiding for the GC that way! [-X

@ak200008 I am acting as project manager for the app process. I made list of to-do items, initially at a high level, but more recently at a very detailed level. And then we scheduled the things out, week by week, so that everything can get turned in on time. She marks things off, and adds things to the schedule as needed.

I’m not worried about how she will manage next year because she has always “project managed” her own school work just fine. It’s just that managing this complex set of stuff on top of what she is already doing for school is too much.

@labegg Oh my goodness. I’d be spitting nails about now. ~X( Please let us know how your D’s meeting goes.

@ak200008 That’s been a tough line for me to walk as well. Mostly I’m asking questions to make sure she’s on track and not missing anything really important, but I’m doing a little bit of behind-the-scenes scut work. I have been sending ACT scores to colleges. I mailed a transcript to a college today, but D had to get it from her counselor. I reviewed D’s Common App, at her request, before she submitted any of the applications. Overall I’ve been impressed with how D has taken charge and managed everything. She knew it would lay at her feet, though. I did a lot of initial research to help come up with good college options that checked all of her boxes and would work financially, but I’ve always told her that once it was time to work on applications, it was all hers. It helps that her (excellent) GCs are clear that the college application process is the student’s thing and that they need to be in charge as much as possible. I have had almost zero communication directly with the GC with regards to the college app process. (And thankfully D does have excellent GCs and I haven’t NEEDED to get involved!)

@AmyBeth68 D’s major will depend on the school she chooses. It will be some variation of Cognitive Science with Linguistics track, Linguistics, or Computational Linguistics. Oh or Neuroscience with Linguistics minor.
