Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@lifegarding Thank you so much! That is very helpful. Yes, November 2016 was the first time she took the SATs and August 2017 was the second. I’m sure that is why 2016-11-01 is listed as “Date Received”. I just hope they also got her August scores because they are significantly better. I’m sure they did. So far her admission checklist just shows the GC rec received, although since DD’s school uses Naviance, I can see that her transcript and teacher recs were sent the same day as the GC rec. Strange they are not showing up yet, but I am sure they will.

It is interesting that your DD’s school recommends not requesting transcripts or scores be sent until the application is submitted by the student. This would require students to submit the application at least 2-3 weeks before the deadline. I hope the colleges my DD is applying to can match everything together because her scores, transcripts and rec letters have been sent to three schools that she has not yet submitted apps for. Still finishing those essays for the 11/1 deadlines!

Good luck to all - it is a lot to navigate.

@melvin123 yep,I don’t think my kids app is super focused on one aspect of him. Part of the advantage of living where we do is that kids don’t have to be hyper-focused on one aspect of themselves in HS. So he truly is fully engaged with sports and clubs and academics. Probably not pointy enough for his top choices.

DD was called down during the last 15 minutes of the day. GC was polite. GC’s excuse for not getting things done in a timely manner - the school district did not download the school/class profile (which apparently they need to fill out the school reports) until Sept 21, of course that was three weeks ago…; Hurricane Harvey.

GC said DD was the first kid done in the entire 2018 class and that DD will be the first one GC will complete. GC swore she would have it all done by the end of the weekend. GC did mention something about needing a teacher evaluation to be completed for the Common Application schools -which is not clear to me because I thought the teacher evaluation only needed to be completed if the teacher didn’t write their own letter of recommendation? At any rate the Common App is now showing the GC and School reports have been down loaded. It should not have been this hard.

.

In other news - DD has officially changed her 2nd choice major (for schools that request one) to Forensics or Criminology. U of Colorado-Boulder which was in 5th place Friday morning has slipped a bit further after an admissions officer visited school on Friday. Colorado does not offer a Forensics degree. DD has firmly decided that she wants a minor/double major/concentration in forensics or something similar. It is so nice to see her start to bring some potential career choices into focus.

Both of my kids decided to take non AP science courses their senior year so they could investigate potential career options. DD2016 picked food science and DD2018 picked forensic science. It has been a double edged sword, while it would have been nice to knock out a freshman level chem or bio requirement, it is nice to see them enjoy their science choice and investigate a potential career interest.

I’ve been trying to find the words to describe D, but it’s hard. I will say one of the top ones is INDECISIVE. She has such a hard time making decisions. Choosing a college and a major is so hard. She worries about making a wrong decision. I’ve told her over and over that she can change her mind, but she still struggles.

Officially accepted to Alabama (not my first choice). Hopefully submitting CA to Purdue as I type this. Still a couple more potentials out there.

So… Indecisive, smart, funny, dedicated, genuine, cheerleader (all star, not to be confused with sideline)

My D was home and we tackled FAFSA, we both had to make new passwords for our FSA IDs, I guess they expired from last year.

Other than having to sign in what seemed like 50 times, everything went well, DRT worked without problems.
Then we worked on S’s FASFA.
So that’s done.

@labegg I think U Albany and OU have forensic science.

I think it’s great they are doing this exploration.

They should not be placing out of bio or chem intro courses in college imo.

@labegg , the Common App requires that each teacher writing a letter of recommendation also fill out a questionaire… Every teacher in my school gets a reminder from College Placement on or about August 1, saying the Common App is open. If you’ve written any letters for the rising seniors (we do ours in spring/summer before senior year) then it’s time to get to those questions…

So are the Letters of recommendation different than the questionnaire? D had a coach write a letter for scholarships and anything else she might need it for. We didn’t know anyway to upload that to her common app so was just going to invite him on there too and just not send the original one he wrote. We figured he could just copy it into their form? Or should we do something differently?

And once she has invited teachers on the CA I’m assuming it just sends them one email asking them to write something and then just sends that letter to whichever school she adds them to?

It was a very exciting weekend here as my daughter’s Field Hockey team won a huge championship game in double over time. She played 80 minutes of FH with no time off the field…and promptly woke up the next morning sick with a fever. These poor kids are working so hard in their senior year, all of them on here are! I wish for all good things as they continue to move through their exciting and daunting senior year.

Beyond that we made a big OOPS and forgot to actually pay for her Rutgers applications so it’s been sitting in limbo. Somehow there was no prompt to pay and since it’s a safety school we haven’t paid as much attention to the portal. When I went to check on a whim today I saw that it was pending payment. Oh well…I guess we won’t be hearing from them any time soon haha. So this is my friendly reminder to check your portals.

@labegg Forensics was on the table at one point for my D. I think it’s a fascinating major, good for her that she’s starting to make those hard choices by considering potential career.

Today is a productive day. Score requests submitted, transcript requests submitted. FAFSA submitted, Trying to get the CSS profile done but apparently the site is down. All that is left is trying to convince S to not wait until the last minute to complete the applications which is not an easy task

D showed me an email she got from college board that said she could submit SAT results to 4 schools for free if she did it by tomorrow,9 days after taking most recent SAT. That is before she even got results. Weird I thought but she did it and had them sent to 4 safeties.
Saw GC on Friday after brief ceremony to recognize students who National Merit SF or Commended. We love GC, I feel lucky after reading about what some of you are dealing with. GC told us she finished D letter and sent it and that one of her teacher letters is in and sent to her list. So schools are getting stuff on D before she actually applies. Hope it all gets matched up.
I feel like things are finally rolling here

We’ve returned from quick visits to two schools. It’s possible we are done with visits now, with small potential for a single shot in the spring. Would you like updated odds?

23% Alabama
20% ASU
17% Texas A & M
10% Trinity San Antonio
5% Tulane
5% Oklahoma
5% Texas Tech
3% Chicago
2% Princeton
10% The Field

When we did CSS Profile, earlier this month, the results said our selected college (Furman), would require W2s from parents and student, 1040 from parent, and 1040 from student. Do we start gathering that stuff now, or wait until Furman officially asks? Thanks.

An admissions rep from Penn State came to my DD’s school. He told my DD if she applied, her fee would be waived (for meeting with him, not because be of financial reasons).

Her friend applied using the Penn State app, and it worked. My DD filled out the Coalition app, and it is not giving her a waiver. Any ideas? She is going to email Admissions.

@3CollegeMom yup, at our school they require seniors to officially submit their applications at least 3 weeks before the college deadline to give the school and teachers enough time to submit their parts. And, this time they took more than 3 weeks to get DD’s submitted even though she turned it in a few days before the big rush from seniors.

So, all of DD’s November 1st applications had to be done by October 8, and her Dec. 1 applications have to be done the first week of November due to the Thanksgiving holidays! It’s crazy, but I’m used to it from last time with S16. Fortunately, D18 was quick on her 1 Nov. 1st application since it’s her top choice, and she’s only applying to 3 schools. She has one December 1st application left to wrap up (just the essay)…phew!

@DavidPuddy Bama must have been a hit!

I should be able to update odds in a couple of days as well. D and H are in Santa Monica, poised to strike on a multi-day USC visit. (FYI there’s a new light rail from downtown Santa Monica to the USC campus. :D/ ) When I asked D earlier today how she likes Santa Monica, she said that it smells like pot and people aren’t as friendly as in Canada. Hmmmm so I guess so far she isn’t feeling at home. I can’t wait to hear what tomorrow brings when she’s on campus, though.

@labegg It sounds like this is about the best news you could have gotten. Hopefully the GC’s part will be done quickly, and you can all move forward.

@AmyBeth68 Congrats to your D! Those wins mean so much to the kids. They will have great memories of that day!

New question: is your kid getting swag yet from their accepted schools? D got a pop socket in the mail from ASU last week. Fun.

@ShrimpBurrito
You said it.

Specifically, virtually all the students that **we ** interacted with during our visit were remarkable. It was actually humbling and awe inspiring in some regards, and I don’t mean that in the hyperbolic way.

@apraxiamom, I think I’d call Furman’s Financial Aid office and ask how to proceed.

@Astro77, agree with calling admissions.

@ShrimpBurrito, what’s a pop socket?

@DavidPuddy, glad the visit went well! I’ve got a smart nephew who goes there.

Next up for D is some more essays for two schools with a November 1 due date. We are inching our way along.

@suzy100 a pop socket is a grip/stand that you attach to the back of your cell phone. They often have fun designs or logos.

My D finally finished her CA essay. Woo-Hoo!!!
