So I spontaneously burst into tears twice today…I think the impending Senior Night on Thursday for her sports team has me a bit emotional. To say the least.
@traveler98 I like your motivational tactic!

@pri930 I teared up last week when someone asked me a question about DD2018. I was feeling particularly vulnerable that day and teared up after a phone call from DD2016 about an apartment lease for junior year too. It happens…hugs.
D18 has mostly reach-ish schools that are all ED. Her safeties are ok but she is super thrilled about them. Would go to two of them but definitely would be disappointed.
My concern is that if she doesn’t apply somewhere ED then the chance of her getting in to one of those schools RD is pretty slim. Also applying to USC which is a crap shoot to say the least. The scattergrams are all over the map for them. Husband went there so that may be a little but helpful, but who knows. She is NMSF so that would obviously be great tuition-wise (especially since she will get no need based aid anywhere) but I am a bit hesitant to roll the dice when her chances ED somewhere else are much better. Ugh. This is brutal.
It’s baffling that UMD doesn’t accept the Common App. What a pain.
Ugh I feel your pain. Brutal. I went to a function the other night. A parent told me all the schools we are applying to are “hard to get into.” Thanks. Poor kids.
@labegg - yes, our S18 submitted his app for UW - Seattle on Sunday night. He got the auto response of “congrats - your Coalition app has been submitted” along with the note that he can “contact the admissions office with any questions.” Nothing with a status portal or anything.
But he just received an email from a Common App school that he submitted a couple weeks ago that said his app was complete. So that one took two weeks. I’m not sure on what to expect from UW. I’ll ask around. At least 100 kids from S’s school are applying, so there will be some insights, I’m sure!
Are you kidding me with this CSS Profile?
@labegg - just found this on the UW website - it says that after you have applied:
"After you have applied for admission, you will receive an invitation to create a UW NetID by email.
Please note, for autumn 2018 freshmen, you should receive this email invitation in December."
So it looks like we just wait.

Still chasing down one last extra LOR! Anyone else worried about waiting until the end of Oct to submit the Common App? I’ve heard the website slows down like crazy as the deadline approaches. :-SS
@Veronica02 oh yeah, I’m right there on the last minute worry train with you! Not much I can do, at this point it’s all D… :!!
Don’t even get me started on the LORs. That’s a black hole I’m scared to even look at! X_X
Update on the bribery-induced progress: I am totally going to have to pay up. Just today S has gone from ~60% to 99% complete on his written McDermott app, and he asked me to review it and offer suggestions. Everything he wrote today was really good…not at all rushed just to get it done. Some answers were super creative, and even the more dry responses are well written. A few responses blew me away. And he’s so excited! About McDermott I mean, not about the 2DS gaming console. :))
Before bed he’s planning to sketch out ideas for his video, which he now seems to feel much more confident about. He has just busted right through his writer’s block and has remembered why he wanted to join the McDermott program in the first place. Makes me very happy to see him like this. $250 is a bargain to see him regain his confidence and be so energized.
I love this, @traveler98!
Well, at least I know test scores have been submitted over here. I did that today per D’s orders. Just for her REA, EA’s and one for merit consideration.
Now pretty please finish those essays and submit before I go :-&
My S18’s school report (large public high school) was finally finalized, but it contains some inaccurate information and I am looking for feedback about whether this is a big deal or not.
The inaccurate information relates to the Honors and AP classes offered by the high school. Specifically, 1) the report incorrectly states that the high school offers AP Calc BC, although it only offers AP Calc AB, and 2) the report lists 4 AP/Honors classes that are offered for the first time this school year. Because these classes weren’t offered previously, current seniors did not have the opportunity to take most of them (two are sophomore-level classes and one is a junior-level class - they used to be advanced classes, which is what most of the students looking for challenging classes enrolled in as sophomores and juniors, but now the classes are available as AP/Honors to current sophomores and juniors).
My son has been doing EA whenever possible, and has recently decided to apply ED to a big reach. The school report is already uploaded to his Common App, which is otherwise basically ready to be submitted.
However, I am concerned that it now looks like my son declined to take a bunch of challenging classes. I am also concerned for other students at the high school, who are likely to be unaware of these inaccuracies. I have notified the high school about the problem and am waiting to hear back. I am thinking that the school report should include footnotes or something indicating that the new advanced classes became available in the 2017-18 school year. Obviously, the Calc BC should be removed.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m wondering if I am overreacting by thinking this could be a problem. I do know that the counselor checked “most rigorous” on the questionnaire for my son, but someone looking at the school report would not think he actually took the most challenging courses available, which he basically did (he took 7 out of 8 APs offered, 1 of 2 Honors, and all “Intensive” classes offered.)
The talk about bursting into tears is making me project forward to what next year will be like. My D hates, with a passion, talking on the phone, and she oftentimes refuses to answer it. Anyone else have a kid like that? What are we going to do when our kids are in college and don’t answer? Call the RA? Any suggestions?
I think the “most rigorous” check mark will go a long way – I imagine most would look at that and not carefully compare lists of offered classes against the transcript. But I would at least alert the school to the issue and try to get them to fix it.
@pickledginger I think that the fact that your GC marked “most rigorous” will outweigh the number of classes listed as possible in the school report. I wouldn’t over think it too much at this point. But you may want to ask the GC. The only silly question is the one that is never asked, IMO.
How did you get to see the completed school report?
Whoa lots of stress in here today. There is work to do and yours kids will get it done (perhaps with some prodding
@labegg, the completed school report was posted on the high school’s website. I think that is standard, at least for the public high schools in my area.
