Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Those of you whose kids have Pitt acceptances, are you in PA or out of state? Just curious. We are in PA, FWIW.

@amominaz Bless you for being so positive. I’m thinking about having to handle the rejections. My D seems to have a priority list, but we’ll also have to visit some of the campuses during winter and spring breaks or weekends to help with the decision. Hopefully, my D will have some good choices to weigh. Location will be a huge factor for D.

@RoonilWazlib99 sorry for saying the obvious! Anyway, congratulations to your son. I’m glad he received some much deserved recognition.

@amominaz if my D is so lucky as to get into several schools (hey, you never know), as soon as she knows she would rather go to one school over another school, she’ll let that other school know.

@AmyBeth68 Pitt should give your D a ton of merit aid because you are their best cheerleader! Seriously, I’m sure your positive posts about the school has resulted in multiple families looking at the school that might not otherwise have done so. Did they give you any idea about when you’d hear about merit? Fingers crossed for you!

@sushiritto - I am sure we will have our share of rejections!! So far, she has been accepted to our in-states (doesn’t want to go there), two OOS state schools with great merit packages (doesn’t really want to go there, either), and one OOS private with a great merit package (would probably go there if she doesn’t get into any of the ones she wants to go to). These schools were low hanging fruit. The others are going to be significantly more difficult!

That’s a good question, @amominaz. I’m not sure how we’re going to handle that. If nothing else, I will probably encourage D to hang onto her super-safety NMF school until the very end, JUST IN CASE.

I’ve seen a lively discussion about this before, maybe on the parents of 2017 thread? Some people feel you should decline asap if you know you won’t attend a school, as it might open a spot for another student, and others feel you have every right to hang on to all of your acceptances until May 1 and that you SHOULD, as teens are fickle and you never know what could transpire before the decision deadline.

@amominaz Your daughter situation sounds like my daughter’s. She has some state schools acceptance but doesn’t want to attend. One private but its last on her list of private. Her fav school won’t let us know for months I think. And then to wait for merit package. Ugh. I want time to slow down as its senior year but I really want to know the college and how much it will cost. LOl

@melvin123 HAHA yeah we’re big fans of Pitt…I hope that her enthusiasm was obvious in her essays lol! Thanks…they are sending out merit beginning in the middle of November through March. So we’re not sure what to expect!!! But staying positive and waiting on the others to come through that she applied for…hoping University of Delaware will release notifications on their portal soon.

@twinsmama - Out of State here (California)

I thought UDel doesn’t even have a deadline until December? Do they review /release results on a rolling basis?

@astro77 yes UDel traditionally begins rolling admit starting in November. Who knows what this year will bring haha. But good question, maybe it’s changed from last year. They haven’t been highly communicative so I’m not really sure what their process is?! Maybe we won’t hear until December like Rutgers and several others.

Thanks @AmyBeth68 ! I did not know that. Hmm…need to get her going on that one!

We are hanging on to acceptances until a final decision is made - I think that will be around February, once all nursing decisions are in and once she knows about the honors program at one of her top picks. And of course any further aid.

These are not tippy-top schools, so I don’t think there’s any danger of denying a seat to anyone by waiting a few months.

@AmyBeth68 , do you know if Rutgers is rolling. DD applied EA but the portal says decision date is in January?

@Pri930 from what I understand from last year’s notification they began rolling out on December 15th. Perhaps this year they are pushed to Jan. 15th but I would check the portal beginning in mid December just in case.

Not that S will be in the situation of comparing multiple acceptances, but my past behavior and my general inclinations lead me to believe I would work with him to narrow down the list and decline superfluous offers well before May 1, especially if there were elite schools or large merit packages involved. I used to be a decision analyst and it’s in my wheelhouse to sort through options based on key metrics; I doubt I could just leave a stack of acceptances alone knowing that S can only choose one. That urge to winnow down to just the top 2-3 contenders would be much stronger if he could free up merit aid or competitive spots for other students.

@AmyBeth68 , Thanks. I really do hope they do not wait till january. She submitted her app in September.

We’ll be leaving our options open here until a final decision is made. In my experience with my older D, things change and additional offers are made right up to the wire.

Yes we won’t decline most offers until a final decision is made. There may be some that can be ruled out earlier, but I doubt too many. I don’t feel it is necessary unless there are scholarships that could be re-allocated. If that is the case, we’ll aim to be quicker to decide.
