@MACmiracle I think rain is preferable to snow. Good luck to your D at the scholarship competition!
@MACmiracle - I am so sorry you are having to deal with the stress of your daughter healing from a concussion IN ADDITION to all the typical senior year stresses. Hoping you have dry weather and clear minds for the trip!
@apraxiamom , Congratulations!!! How wonderful for you all!
We are still getting the “pending” message when trying to check SAT scores. NMF status is riding on a confirming score for D. Do you think if I check the website enough it will magically appear because they will feel sorry for me? >:D<
Delurking from the 2019 Parents thread. Were your NMF kids told what a confirming SAT score would be?
Oh man, that would be maddening @Kayak24! I hope you get great results soon!
And congratulations to your D on the great score, @apraxiamom!
@homerdog Mine wasn’t, but it was a moot point. We knew his 1490 would be enough.
@homerdog , I called NMC a few weeks ago and they would not give me a straight answer other than it will not be higher than the Commended Score (211). They said that last year it was 206 (with a 209 Commended) and that it may be lower than 211 but that they cannot give any firm number bc they won’t pool the data until late December.
Yes, don’t they have to see how many high scorers they have by state?
Thanks all! Doesn’t change the list, but will hopefully increase merit.
@mommdc In short, the quality of the school’s network (with employers, other schools, alumni) and the (arguably) better education (smaller class sizes, better facilities, more research opportunities).
@apraxiamom Woot! Woot!!!
@mommdc No snow is a blessing.
I’m counting our blessings these days and seeing the glass as even more than half-full.
I’m overwhelmed by all the kind congrats and support from this group. You guys really have been great and it warms my heart. THANK YOU.
@apraxiamom WOOT! Congrats on that fantastic score!!!
@MACmiracle continuing to keep your daughter in mythoughts…I really hope she’s feeling better. What a tough situation, especially during an already stressful time. Much love to you both.
We finally got the update on the portal from university of Delaware…Acceptance into the Honors College. It’s a nice confidence boost! We’re headed out to Pitt on an invitational Honors Experience visit that my daughter received last week. She has meetings with some folks in admissions, honors college and head of the Russian Dept. I think this will help her to determine if Pitt remains in the top spot (I don’t see how it won’t, but good to meet with a professor from her program). It is a lot of driving just a few days before Thanksgiving, but I think it’s worthwhile at this stage.
Maybe I better prepare myself that D will be one of those kids this time who doesn’t get her SAT score until next week. %-( Part of the problem here is a decision will need to be made, if she doesn’t achieve the confirming score for NMF, about whether she wants to try again in December (and therefore study for it). There isn’t a whole lot of time for that and certainly none to be wasted studying for another SAT test she may not need (so many college essays still looming and a few apps still looming, plus lots of AP school work and winter sport starting).
D did NOT feel good about the Nov. SAT after taking it, so I’m not holding my breath for a good score here. She much prefers ACT and her confidence was completely rattled after the unexpected result from the Oct sitting (which isn’t a good recipe for a good score on the November one).
I just need to know either way so we can figure this out. (sigh) And I would really love if they could just tell us “your scores won’t be out until Tuesday” (or whatever it is) rather than the relentless checking of the CB website only to see a foreboding message about how they apologize about D’s scores still Pending.
She missed the guaranteed confirming score by one point on the last sitting. Please just let us know what she got on this one so we can move on, College Board. I’m so tired b/c I tossed and turned so much last night and woke up multiple times, probably b/c this was all on my mind. D is really leaning away from the big NMF scholarship school but we don’t want to close the door on it because things could change as answers from other colleges come in.
End rant. 8-|
@kayak24 I’m SO sorry you are dealing with this, I can’t imagine the frustration :(. The waiting is so brutal! As for her feeling she didn’t do well, Sometimes when they feel that way it’s the exact opposite!! That happened with my D on her last ACT…she really wasn’t confident at all and then she ended up getting her best score by 4 points. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for her…she’s worked so hard and this is a lot of stress :(.
Apropos of nothing, I just read this on the site today and truly LOLd.
“Saving neighborhood cats on your balcony does not count as community service.”
You’re welcome.
Congrats on the new & improved score @apraxiamom !
Have a great revisit at Pitt @AmyBeth68 glad the UDel portal finally sorted out for you as well and @MACmiracle I hope your new, shorter itinerary works well as good compromise for your D.
Man @kayak24 you have truly had the rollercoaster journey, I am so sorry you’ve got SAT drama now, so frustrating. I’ll keep the positive vibes heading your way!
Thanks for the LOL @suzy100 :))
@Booajo yes it’s about options isn’t it? It’s been especially hard because really her schools are all low-match/safeties because she’s hunting merit, so she’s not worried about not getting in, and she seems to have lost some of her fear of not getting enough $$ as well for some reason. In my own mind, based on the anecdotal evidence here on CC from last year, as well as what I’ve gotten from NPCs, I think she’ll be ok with the schools she’s already applied to, and that she vastly prefers to any other option. But, like I said, it’s about having options, and having a slam dunk that you wouldn’t mind is no bad thing. I just can’t believe we’re in the middle of Nov of her senior year still searching for that!! ~X(
I think she’s going to go the CSU route. We’re supposed to go to UCR tomorrow for a preview day event but at this point i’m not sure it’s worth the time to go. I’ll discuss it with her tonight.
Soapbox rant trigger warning…
I think that @mommdc makes a very valid allusion in the post about maintaining GPA for scholarship. I encourage everyone with a scholarship opportunity to pay close attention to the fine print regarding continued eligibility. Maintaining a 3.5, 3.2, 3.0 GPA in college is no easy task. Many straight A kids in high school are not straight A kids in college. Anecdotally, it seems most level down a half to a whole grade…A to A-/B+ or B to C etc.), particularly if they are a STEM major or are attending a school that has core subject requirements for which they have no interest or less apptitude. Liberal arts professor (english/history etc) have been known to stick it to STEM kids. First level STEM classes are notoriously hard weed out classes. And the plan old stress of adjusting to a new environment can play havoc on GPA. It’s the proverbial big fish little pond, little fish big pond. There are a fair number of CC Class of 2016 kids with stellar stats that are experiencing all kinds of “bumps” in the road, from grades to emotional stress to change of major. Sometimes we see the college admit as a finish line of sorts when, in fact, it is a whole new starting line and just because they won the last race, doesn’t even mean they will finish the next one.
(Sorry I am in a cold hard reality mood today. My rant was in no way implying that anyone’s kiddo is not perfectly capable of being super successful in in whatever race they choose to run!)
DD’18 had one interview this morning and has another tomorrow afternoon – after her last H.S. XC race. milestones.
@labegg , those are really great points! Thank you for sharing because it’s unhealthy for any of our kids to go into that process with a skewed vision of the reality they will face.
Thank you all for your support. I’m thinking this process HAS to have less curves and roller coaster rides with S20. We’ve exhausted the lot with D18 already and it’s only November. #:-S SAT score still = PENDING (sigh) Has anyone ever received an SAT score on a Saturday or should I hang up the College Board stalking until Monday? L-)
In other news, DH just called and said there is a large envelope from Pitt that arrived in the mail this afternoon. I’m waiting for D18 to arrive home to open it and she’ll call me and let me know what’s inside. I suspect it may only be her Admission letter (email admission arrived a few days ago) but it sure would be nice if there is a merit offer in there. I’m not getting my hopes up on that though, since Pitt releases merit in weekly batches (supposedly a committee meets on Fridays and mails decisions on Mondays) and D only applied two weeks ago.
