Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@AmyBeth68 - Pitt is a strong contender, still waiting on that merit letter. Other than that, Temple, Fordham, ASU and UCF & UNM are all probably still solidly in the game. Tulane if she gets one of their FT scholarships, but that’s a slim chance at best. We haven’t visited UNM or UCF yet, we’ll go in February & that could be a game changer.

@SC Anteater If the school says it’s only optional, then IMO, I wouldn’t send any. I really don’t know what is considered a decent score on the Japanese subject test because of all the native speakers, but if that weren’t an issue, then a 610 is low. And I still think it’s odd to take only 1 subject matter test, so I think it could raise more issues than submitting none. I know there is a thread on CC about whether colleges really mean optional when they say optional; some people think if you are in a strong HS where the GC knows about subject tests and the kids do too, that this isn’t really optional for you. But reading that, I still think it’s a balancing test, and if it were me, I’d not want to submit the Japanese results. And sure, your kid can study and take the December exam, but if it’s option, if it were me, I wouldn’t do it. There are so many things for our kids to do between now and winter break that I can’t see adding anything else unless it’s mandatory. But that’s just me.

Congratulations @GertrudeMcFuzz !

Right about this time, I sure do wish my D applied to some rolling admissions schools. Mailbox is kind of empty around here.

No school next week = Application-palooza!

I certainly hope my D18 gets accepted to her ED school because her interest level in completing her other applications is ZERO.

My S18 applied to 3 rolling admission school and already has acceptances in hand, but the school he really wants to go to won’t notify until March, so it’s a lot of sitting around and waiting for us.

My D has mostly applied to schools where she is confident of acceptance, but it is the merit award that will really determine whether she can attend.

My D has some acceptances in hand as well. All with great merit packages, so I won’t be crying if she procrastinates and doesn’t get anything else done. She might be crying, though.

You all asked earlier if S’s score changes the list. Tonight, we discussed adding Georgia Tech as his in-state school, instead of the local college. His new score makes Tech more realistic, it’s in-state, and it’s more home-school friendly than in years past. Plus they take Common App, which he already has completed. It’d be a regular decision application since he missed EA.

S18 got a post card from UTD with the regular deadline dates for the McDermott Scholarship but he already submitted by the early consideration deadline. Anyone else that submitted early get this card?

Yay for the confirming SAT score @kayak24!

Yes, S got the same postcard @3scoutsmom. Two copies in fact!

D18 found out that she was accepted EA to UGA this afternoon while we were driving down to Atlanta for her Stanford interview (traffic was a nightmare). The interview lasted nearly an hour and went well.

@traveler98 Glad you guys got it too. I was a tiny bit worried that it meant that DS had messed up his early app!

Could one of your kids who are going to be CS majors PLEASE develop some program that weeds out kids who already applied from mailers from colleges that say “please pick us”? PET PEEVE!!!

@apraxiamom – GaTech is the deal of the century for GA kids interested in STEM. Top notch school for (relatively) low cost.

@droppedit: he likes science and math ( is taking AP Physics and Precalculus right now, AP Calculus in the spring), but his planned major has been linguistics. Ga Tech, with its international community, is good for that too.

@traveler98 and @3scoutsmom , D did not apply to UTD but received the same postcard today. Mass mailing today from UTD, apparently! They need to save their postage for the kids who haven’t already applied.

I was kind of surprized that they sent out that post card, I heard they always have tons of applications. Maybe not as many applicants this year?

Do you think it may have been NMSF-related?
