Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I like the ice cream idea.

So, S’18 seems to managing stress pretty well, on the surface. But he shared with me that he had a dream last night that he forgot to submit something in all of of his applications and that he needed to take a gap year and reapply. Looks like a classic stress dream to me.

Re senior year stress, S seems to be handling things pretty well. He didn’t have the college app season to worry about and none of his classes are giving him trouble. He’s doing less socially this semester though, because almost all his friends are busy doing applications every weekend and the few that are already done like S are not the “social planners”.

Typical Friday conversation:
Me: “Do you have plans with your friends this weekend?”
S: “No, everyone is doing applications.”
Me: “But what about Friends X, Y, and Z? I thought you said they were done.”
S: “Well yeah, but they didn’t say they wanted to do anything.”
Me: “So did YOU ask THEM if they wanted to get together?”
S: “Well, no, but I’m ok with that.”

Sigh. He has plenty of friends and he will go out if someone else plans it, but I don’t think he’s been the originator of any social event since he grew out of sleepovers (eighth or ninth grade I think). Even when he’s had groups of friends over to our house it started out as someone else saying “hey, we should have a game night at someone’s house!” and S chiming in later to offer to host.

Stanford is tomorrow and I think thats the first of the top schools to announce. Good luck to those who applied.

@traveler98 - that’s my S21. I think every weekend could come and go and he could care less if he has plans or not. Hoping that once kids start getting licenses he will get a little more active socially. He is a friendly, chatty kid, and happy to go somewhere if asked but zero initiative to plan anything.

Whoops, thanks @Pri930. Sending good vibes for the Stanford decisions tomorrow.

Can we get a roll call on who has a kid waiting for the Stanford decision tomorrow?

Good Luck tomorrow! @Booajo @RoonilWazlib99 @droppedit and @Pri930 I hope I did not miss anyone.

@amominaz Is your student applying? If so, good luck to you too.

@birdie3 - no, not mine. Just want to know who I need to be rooting for tomorrow!

Omg this is so fun! It’s getting real now, folks! I don’t have a horse in the Stanford race but am so excited for the members of the ‘18 crew who do! We’re pulling for all of you!!

Crossing all appendages for @Booajo @RoonilWazlib99 @droppedit and @Pri930 big day tomorrow. Buckle up everyone it’s getting real now. Exciting and nerve wracking all at once. I also don’t have any of the tippy tops/ivy to worry about but will be rooting for all of you that do!

Lots of luck to all. Adding us to the list. However, I do not have a good feeling about this. I hope to hear good results from you guys.

Good luck @cardinal2020mom

My D applied REA to S too.

I’m sure most of you know know this already, last year, 745 students were accepted from a pool of 7,822 REA applications (9.5%) and I’m sure applications have increased this year. And there are plenty of recruited and preferred walk-on athletes included in that number and Questbridge matches too.

@sushiritto, best of luck to your D. I do wish we know how many QB kids they took in.

Out of curiosity for those who applied to Stanford REA, was it a tough decision for your DS or DD to use their one “bullet” (as they say) for Stanford? Was there any other school with REA or ED that was a close second or was it Stanford or bust in the early round?

It was easy for mine. The other schools he is really interested in all were public.

No, my daughter has not applied to Stanford SCEA. Sorry if I confused you all. I was just saying that Stanford is tomorrow and its the first Ivy\Top school thats releasing the decisions.
Good Luck tomorrow! @Booajo @RoonilWazlib99 @droppedit @sushiritto and @cardinal2020mom .
So excited for you!!!

SO nervicited for all our Stanford hopefuls! :-SS @-) Rooting for you all!!

I have the utmost empathy for anyone’s kid struggling with AP Calc this year. It was my D’s horror class last year. She made it through with a B both semester by her fingernails and she is still bitter about it. She had the opportunity to continue more of the same with the same teacher this year in IB Math, not surprisingly she chose to take IB Math Studies, which is basically stats plus a lot of review for her, instead. She has not regretted that decision even once this year.

Her other “blemish” if you can really call it that (which I don’t), is IB Visual Arts. Never let anyone tell you art classes are easy, she squeaked through with Bs last year and it’s a 2-year commitment so this year it’s more of the same. :-< It’s funny, the calc teacher used to tell/warn the kids that his class was the hardest one in the school, but I don’t think he ever took that art class!!

Finally, BIG congrats to @GertrudeMcFuzz on Barrett!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

@Kayak24 D is like me. “Swing for the fences.” If you’re going to fail, then fail spectacularly.

Wayne Gretzy once said that “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” So, she’s using her one bullet to shoot for the moon. I like cliches. :))

D has some other private reaches on her list, that’s she’s very interested in too, but most of her favorites are CA publics.

I too will be eagerly watching this thread tomorrow. No ED/REA/SCEA in our house, and I can only imagine the anticipation and stress involved. Here’s hoping that all of our kids can roll with it, no matter the outcome! :-*

D has a friend who has applied ED to William and Mary. D is counting down the days with her. D mentioned last night that no one in her inner circle has committed to a college yet. If this friend’s ED goes through (and it likely will), she will * know where she’s going to college for sure * and that seems to freak D out a little. It’s getting REAL, folks!
