Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@burghdad yep, S18 has applied to Vanderbilt and Wash U. My current “fear” is he gets in without merit. Good problem to have of course!!

@Booajo of course because she didn’t have Vandy on radar before visit the deadlines for any merit money had past a week before.

@AmyBeth68 @Booajo that’s too funny that you meant Miami Ohio. You can tell I had warm weather on my mind!

@burghdad count me in with everyone else saying that you hit the nail on the head. Like you, I promised too, and I really felt that I couldn’t go back on my promise even though the commitment was more than I anticipated. Also, my D did everything asked of her, so I didn’t think it appropriate to withdraw the carrot that I had dangled for the past umpty up years.

I just hope that our kids’ college experiences are everything that we have hoped for. I’m not talking about fancy dorms or gym facilities or five star dining, but instead rich intellectual conversations, being exposed to new areas of learning, internships and study abroad options, and of course enjoying a nice (but not crazy!) social life. I feel so sorry for the families who really struggle to pay for college and their kids are miserable. I had dinner tonight with one of my relatives whose D is a college freshman, and they fit into the latter category. I really give kudos to them, though, for noticing all the good things that have come out of this experience, even though she hopes to transfer for next year. Some of the good things included learning how to cope in an environment that she doesn’t feel comfortable in, increased independence, and since the school was in a different region than where she lived but was where her grandparents lived, she was able to develop a relationship with them by going out to dinner with them twice a month.

The last thing I want to say about this is that when I list the things I want my D to obtain in college, it’s easy to see that a lot of colleges can give our kids this. Which gets back to the original point, is it worth the money, when other schools are substantially less and maybe even free?

What we did was compare the schools and the amount of aid in writing to the schools as the process ended. This allowed ourduaghter’s higher ranked schools to see what she was receiving. We had good luck with having our daughters’ first ranked schools increase their aid based on seeing their competitors level of scholarships.

Deleted.

I missed scheduling to pull my DD’s wisdom teeth out in time, when I called after Thanksgiving holiday, all Winter break appointments were all taken until Jan 14th (MLK weekend), I scheduled for her on the 13th thinking it might just take couple days to recover, but the discussion here scared me, I hope she doesn’t get so many puffiness days… worried…

So S18’s dentist has not said anything about his wisdom teeth. For those of you getting it done, was it something you needed to bring up or did dentist tell you it was time?

@jjkmom My daughter did not go fully under. The oral surgeon said if she had, he could have provided steroids to help with puffiness. Apparently she was a challenge, so that might have had something to do with her degree of swelling. Another kid she just visited, who did not go under either, didn’t swell at all. She also bruised a bit along her jawline, but because she is Asian it was not as noticeable as it might have been had she had a lighter skin tone. He warned her she could have a black eye, but thankfully that didn’t happen.

I really think it just depends how much “work” they have to do - it’s very individual, unlike perhaps other types of surgeries. I think she had a particularly hard time of it … it took her about a week to feel back to normal (with some tough love). Her stitches have all fallen out, but she goes back Tuesday to doublecheck that. She was also put on antibiotics for 8 days, and is still doing an oral rinse twice a day. She only took the Tylenol 3 for the first day or so, after that it was regular Motrin. She had tacos, carefully, last night so I think we are through (had it done December 20).

@Momma2018 When she had her usual xrays done at the dentist they would show up and it was always a “someday” proposition. Her teeth grow very slowly. During the summer, they grew a tiny bit. He said we could wait a while, but with college looming I decided to go see if they could come out now. It was a tough choice - wait a while and maybe they would have been easier to remove, but waiting could put her into college and it might have been more challenging to schedule it. They were not causing her problems at all, but it was clear from the xray that they were going to eventually.

She’s glad it’s over, in any case.

@Momma2018 S18 was complaining of pain on the right side. We knew it was the wisdom tooth so I made an appt in early Nov. with the surgeon since we had already gone through it with D16. The removal was initially scheduled for Friday after Thanksgiving, but needed to be rescheduled. Due to exams he held out until this past Wed.

My D had absolutely no swelling but it was an easy removal and she had a five day course of low dose steroids. The surgeon told us she would get some swelling regardless but I was obsessive about making sure she kept her head elevated and keeping up the on and off icing routine going for the first two days.

@Momma2018 Our orthodontist did a xray at her retainer check. This summer she was not ready but Nov xray said yes. S20 is ready too but I could not do 2 at once. Our removal is the 3rd.

Happy New Year to all on this 2018 parent page. You have been so gracious, supportive, enthusiastic and helpful. Wishing all good things and fun adventures for you and your kiddos in the coming year!

Our two oldest religiously did the ice packs (frozen mini peas in zip loc bags tied around the head) on/off about every 20 min on the first day, and a bit less often on the second.

Second day was a bit of swelling, third day was the most, then it decreased.

My son got a doctor’s note for 3 days off from work last summer I think. He was over the worst by then. But complete healing takes several weeks if the teeth were impacted in the bone. They usually have a follow up appointment a week after the procedure to assess healing.

My kids had orthodontic treatment and on the panorex xray they took, you could see the wisdom teeth and position. They told us that they had to come out.

You can ask the dentist to do a panorex xray next time he goes for a checkup. If it is recommended that their wisdom teeth be removed, I would do it this summer, before starting college.

Interesting that our dentist now recommends a much younger age for removing wisdom teeth. I was surprised when he said my D15 was ready to have them removed during her freshman year of high school. In fact he wanted it done before he put braces on her. All three of my kids have had normal to slow tooth development and, although the wisdom teeth were visible on xray, none were even close to erupting through the gum line. He likes to refer them to the oral surgeon for removal before they show any sign of root development as the roots can get a bit convoluted as the teeth grow. D18 also had hers removed 9th grade year, same situation.

The procedure was shockingly fast- from the time they took them back for the procedure to the time they wheeled them out for discharge (heavily sedated and groggy mind you) it was perhaps 20 minutes max. Fast recovery for both to boot. Feeling lucky- hoping it goes as well for D22 some day

Re Wisdom Teeth Removal - My D had her consultation on Dec 28 - 4 teeth $2880. Since we missed the end of year window I may get another opinion as that seems kind of high to me and our dental insurance is not great. Curious if that’s the norm or just more California pricing that I have grown so fond of!!

@Momma2018 - I just had two of MY wisdom teeth out this break! All four of mine came in nicely and there was enough room so I didn’t need to have them out (no braces or anything for me either). But I cracked one straight through over Thanksgiving so they decided to remove it and the one above it as that would then be a “nuisance” tooth. I had zero swelling and mild pain for about a week. No complications.

My kids are almost 18, almost 16, and 8. There has been no discussion of wisdom teeth removal for anyone, so I’m hoping they are lucky and got the good teeth that just come in the way they are supposed to. Maybe your kiddo has them, too.

I think when my D got them out they were $1,300 for all 4 and for my S $1,600. We had to pay only a fraction because of dental insurance. This was done in office, so a few hundred per tooth and anesthesia was billed by 15 min increment (took 30 min).

But we live in a smaller rural town.

@my2caligirls Our quote was 1900 for all 4. We don’t have dental insurance so we will cover the complete cost.

@birdie3 did you inquire whether medical insurance might cover some of it? They might if the wisdom teeth are bony impacted.

@mommdc @birdie3 thanks for the info - know it depends on how impacted they are but that helps.
