Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

My S was also born September 99 and I went back to work when he was eight weeks old. Between the baby and work, life was kind of a blur for about a year and I really don’t remember Y2K. I’m going to guess it was our usual New Years…relaxing at home and falling asleep well before midnight. I do vaguely remember getting out several hundred dollars in cash just in case there was a problem with the banks.

@Kayak24 , like you, I figured the hospitals were the safest possible places to be.

@traveler98 , I remember the cash warnings. I don’t think my husband and his family withdrew any, though.

All apps finally in here as well. I’m so glad we’re past the point of friendly reminders.

Y2K I worked in a call center for the credit card industry. Oh what fun. Same call over and over.

Happy New Year to all the wonderful supportive parents of 18’ers.

Long time 2018 parent lurker here, just waiting to extend my gratitude to all of you for your insight, humor, honesty and great information. It was nice to know so many out there were also walking this path, in addition to my real life friends. The anonymity here opens a space for a lot of great information exchange - some of the info shared here would probably not be comfortable to talk about in real life, so I’m so glad it exists.

Happy New Year, and best of luck to your amazing kids through their process!

As I mentioned in a previous post dd not not have Vanderbilt on her oginal list and was not even on radar until we visited 1st week in December. As such she did not have her ACT score sent there when she sent them to all the other schools she applied to.

Waited until yesterday to apply to last two schools. Today she realized that because Vandy was not on her original list she had not sent act scores there and also realized that unlike lots of other schools Vandy does not seem to have a grace period for scores, recs etc. after application deadline.

She sent a request to ACT today to send scores and an email to the regional ac. Remains to be seen if this knocks her application out.

Of course I reminded her if she hadn’t waited until last day to sent app when she had a whole week off she would have discovered this in time to sent the ACT in a timely fashion.

Welcome @Jensmom27! Good luck to Jen!

DD’18 just finished her last college app essay!

Happy new year to all my CC’18 friends - thank you for all your support and all your advice!

Happy New Year to All!!

Thought we had finished with the essay portion of this fun journey when we finished college app #12 2 weeks before Christmas but no such luck…#1 ( I think) so far on her list of acceptances was the only one so far with no merit. Back to task with you guessed it complaining she went. I was not too tolerant of the complaining as the only thing she had to do all vacation was these two scholarship apps for this school. Just told her it was her call…so far with no merit this is her most expensive school …if there is no even attempt at scholarships we can take it off the table. She got to work and today she finished and I proofed the essays for one of the applications. She still needs a recommendation and to complete they other before January 10th…read January 7th in this house…but at least we are In the game.

Happy New Year!!! May 2018 bring all of us blessings and joy. Lots of changes are going to to take place in 2018 not sure I am ready but I know its coming. Congratulations on all the acceptances. Had a lot to catch up on. I know all of the kids will find where they are meant to be.

Very Happy New Year to my CC friends! I’m thankful for all the information and support I’ve received from you all!

3 scholarship essays completed and submitted today but it was pulling teeth (wisdom tooth joke) to get them done during the 2 weeks off for the holidays.

Is anyone have particular preference regarding college quarter vs semester system? My DD wants to attend UCs, but her cousin told her that quarter system is very tough (since my DD is more slow pace and says she wants to take time working and enjoy college experience), she also applied to some strong CSUs which are semester system, I just wonder if I should even worry about this factor. (I personally experienced both and love the quarter system because I have no time to screw up). Can’t wait for the decision and envy those who at least couple some in the pockets or have decided where to go. We won’t know until March!

Well, D submitted an app at 11:51 last night. None of the essays were proofread so I hope they were OK! 2 more on the table for today and then that’s it. D may win this year’s procrastination award.

@burghdad good luck. After i read your post i went back to check that all DDs scores had been sent. Her list hasnt changed so we were fine.
I will need sedative for next 3 months though.

@suzy100 my S18 is still trying to finish Wash U stuff. I’m guessing too little too late at this point. I’m still not even sure why he is applying there, but maybe it is fate? Good luck to everyone–application season is drawing to a close finally!)

@booajo My son is also working on those. I don’t see him finishing apps for all of them, but I am hoping he’ll get apps done for Danforth and maybe one other. Sure would be nice if WashU had just one application for the several merit scholarships it offers, wouldn’t it?

@jjkmom we’ve discussed semester vs quarter since most UC’s and SLO are quarter based. Prefer semester for various reasons but in terms of deciding whether to go to one school vs another this would fall low on the list.

Here are my reasons for liking semester better: transfer/DE/AP credits just seem to line up better, less classes required hopefully means less scheduling issues typical at CA publics, academic calendar may be out of sync.

Of course these reasons did not deter many from applying to UCLA this year

Hey guys. It’s been a while since I’ve checked in. Thought I would give an update for where we are.

DS did raise his ACT score at the December sitting. While I had hoped this final ACT test would bring us closer to a decision it has done just the opposite.

Just shy of the amount needed for the Presidential at Alabama but it does better our position. Bama still has his heart but our budget is pretty firm and short of more scholarship money I don’t see the UA Scholar award at Bama doing enough. Breaks my heart and this is a point of contention with DH and me now. I wish I could wave a wand and make it happen.

Ole Miss comes in as the best option economically but DS doesn’t really have warm fuzzy feelings. Our tour guide wasn’t great and we just did the general overview and the honors college when we went so considering another trip. I know the honors college there is popular on CC but it was a turn off for DS. At the end of the day I’m not sure DS is going to do Honor college wherever he ends up anyway.

He liked Texas Tech when we visited and considers Tech his 2nd choice after Bama. He does qualify for a scholarship here that puts this in the budget although more expensive than Ole Miss. If we are honest this is the most likely option at this point.

At the last minute he decided to send in an app to A&M (thanks to Harvey they had extended the deadline. At least Harvey was good for something). He also sent an app in to Baylor. I don’t see either of those matching the offers we have money wise but you never know.

Oh and he applied to UAH after they offered a fee waiver where he would receive full tuition . But he really wants the big university experience so I don’t expect this to turn into anything. Maybe we can use the offer for leverage with UA?
