@bearcatfan Where are you finding scholarships? My twins have applied regular action to their choices, so we don’t know anything yet.
@Twinmma Most of the ones she’s applied to have been local/regional. We found some of those through the guidance office, but a lot of them I knew about from seeing the announcements in previous years.
There are a couple on her college’s website she will apply to (but she’s not 100 percent sure she is going there yet, so she has until March to apply for them).
@Twinmma, does your school post scholarship information on their social media? The school where I work does. My son is pursuing scholarships based on organizations to which we belong.
Long wait over Christmas break is finally over, and DS’s Singletary scholarship interview is now scheduled. Feeling relieved!
Good luck with the teaching to drive!
Well D submitted her final apps last night, again without asking someone to proofread them. I had a quick glance at one this morning, and suffice it to say that it is more likely that it hits above freezing here today than it is that she will be admitted to that school. (We are in the midwest.) I’m not even looking at the other one. 8-|
DD’18 submitted her final app last night! Phew. #:-S
@suzy100
My DD didn’t share a single essay.
It never occurred to me that she should or would, she’s always been very independent. I would have liked to read them out of curiosity but alas, she didn’t share.
My daughter had her sister proof them, me not so much lol! Fortunately my older daughter is a writing fellow at her college so she offered grammatical help but nothing to do with content. Sorry to hear @Suzy100 but they will be authentic and hopefully that’s meaningful to the admissions team.
@SnowflakeDogMom, she shared others with me purely for proofing for typos. She’s also very independent and would never have permitted me to suggest substantive changes, nor would I have offered them. She really has a unique voice in her essays, so I couldn’t have even done it. For one question that asked essentially what the student likes to do in his or her free time, she ended her answer with “or” - as in, did not complete the sentence.
I would have pointed that one out to her.
ETA: That one is not very meaningful @AmyBeth68! It’s OK though, really. I’m not even going to say anything to her. It was the longest of long shots anyway.
I have not seen anything my daughter submitted. Rightly or wrongly I thought this was something she should do on her own and if she wanted me to read them she would ask me to do so.
Funny story, the other day my wife got a call from woman had watched our daughters before they started school and she said that she saw notice from her church that my Daughter won a local $1000 Unity Scholarship. The woman asked my wife what she had written her essay about and my wife said she had no idea and suggested maybe the friend asks her as she might tell her and then she can share with us.
S18 has been acting like the world’s biggest little kid today: playing in the snow, skidding around. He’s never seen snow and he is thoroughly enjoying today’s Savannah snow event. It started snowing at noon and it’s still snowing now.
@apraxiamom No, I’ve not seen any scholarship info on social media. I’ve have boys contact school counselor for suggestions and we’ll check threads under ‘scholarships’ to see what I can glean there.
My son’s school announces college acceptances on the morning announcement. Needless to say - he is not sharing with them…lol He said he “might” share his final decision.
Also, like some of you, my son didn’t share his essays or ask me to proof. Said he was having his English teachers do it, since they are “trained” in writing…feeling the love here…
Down to last essay. 16 colleges whew! I applied to 3 back in the day. Two EA acceptances before the holidays with some nice merit and some good news after a really stressful Fall.
@Veryapparent it was 3 for me back in the day too! Ohio University, Bowling Green and Kent State - I had aspirations to go out of state that my parents humored for a bit, but eventually they put a cap on it.
I am wondering how many of us were in that range and what the precipitating factor was/is for the substantial increase and when it happened?
@ChattaChia My DS won’t announce his acceptances and said he won’t until he chooses his college. He has declined my desires to post pictures on Facebook of him with his banners/acceptance letters. Oh well. Someday we can share with others and celebrate.
I wanted to see the essays (my money is paying for the applications and colleges), and I reviewed them for all my kids. One wanted help from the beginning, the others reluctantly handed them over when they thought they were ready. At least with my kids school, I don’t feel that the teachers and college counselors do a great job with essay editing. They are reading for a lot of students and don’t put the thought in that we do. I thought there were plenty of edits to make. Did it make any difference? I don’t know. After 3 rounds of college apps I really don’t know what makes the difference. However, my kids were 3 for 3 with their selective ED schools, so at least I didn’t give them too much bad advice
@Veryapparent @labegg I only applied to 1 school back in the day. I was essentially an auto-admit for UT Austin (I wouldn’t have gotten in there today) and was a commuter. It was a no-brainer for me. I ended up transferring my junior year because I wanted to get away. I don’t remember applying to either college being any work at all.
@labegg It’s definitely the common app. I remember handwriting all my essays and filling out 3 separate applications. Also I don’t really recall there being a merit aid thing back then. We were full pay (7 kids though). It was the state school route for me. At least my D is casting a wide net in the hunt for merit aid…I think that’s different now too. Many of her friends are doing the same.
