Wow! Are these private schools who are publicly announcing test sores and acceptances etc.? Crazy!
There’s enough competition! The kids are pretty tough on themselves already and most like to lay low and do their own thing competing with themselves. I understand about motivation for further accolades, but it should be with the permission of the student.
All of you affected by the winter storm, stay safe, warm and dry!
We got hit by some snow and pretty heavy winds. Since the weather was peaceful the evening before the storm, I inflated our twelve foot Santa as usual. In the morning I noticed the wind and ran outside to make sure the Santa was okay, but he was gone. I followed the cord and nothing was at the end of it. Then I heard the sound of a sail flapping, and looked over too see Santa high up in a neighbor’s tree. I called the neighbor who tried to pull down the shades in his living room before his two year old saw it and got upset. It turns out Santa was a big hit among the neighborhood children. After the snow stopped DH and another neighbor with a long pole helped Santa down.
Meanwhile the doctor called about my blood work and I am B12 deficient again. No wonder I am doing silly things like buying a Santa inflatable and leaving it out in a storm to fly away.

@ChattaChia - - just . . . WOW!
Public school…perfect score…first in it’s history, apparently. Ironically, I figured the news article was coming, but it hasn’t…yet…
I think my D18 is done applying to colleges with 8, just some scholarship apps to finish. Phew!! 3 admits, 1 deferral, 4 to hear from yet (3 of those are reaches).
In my day, admission to a 4 year college was a HS graduation requirement at my tiny parochial school. You didn’t have to go, but you had to be accepted in order to get your diploma.
I had a choice of 3 or 4 Virginia state schools with COA about 5500 a year
regardless of school. I came out of undergrad owing 10k or so.
My D18 could apply wherever as long as we could weigh the options before deciding. It’s tough with friends committing already, but we don’t want her taking on a big debt unnecessarily. When asked if she has a favorite school, she says she’s not sure and I believe her. I think she’ll make the most of wherever she ends up. I love Pitt, but I don’t want to influence her choices…can’t wait to see where she ends up!
My D just got the final scholarship offer for Rowan. $15,000! Bringing net direct costs down to $11,000-ish. I’m feeling very thankful right now as I consider what a blessing it would be to get her through debt-free.
We’ll have to see how her other options turn out since size will be an issue for her. Ideally, she wanted small with an opportunity for close relationships. H and Grandma are going to be so pleased when they hear the news.
@MACmiracle congrats to your daughter. That is great
Woohoo @MACmiracle!
Fantastic @MACmiracle! That is a stellar merit award!
Congrats, @MACmiracle
I’m remembering typing my apps, for some reason colleges used colored paper? It made corrections difficult. And then waiting for the big envelope…ah, the memories. I think I applied to 8 schools, but two were because of a bet with another student that I would get in with my less-impressive stats.
No college apps for me. I did a three year vocational education program in Germany.
I did on-the-job training and went to vocational school. It was all free, in fact I got a small salary that increased every year.
Congratulations @MACmiracle !
Great merit news @MACmiracle !!!
Who won the bet, @ollie113?
@suzy100 Ha! I did, but only because applying as a female STEM student gave me a bit of a push.
I applied to two schools senior year (our local directional and a private school an hour and a half away). I announced that spring that I didn’t want to go to college at all. However, the jobs I have the altitude for tend to require a college degree. Bussing tables didn’t agree with, so the following year I started at a LAC where I had gone to a summer program between junior and senior year. I took a gap year before there were gap years. I didn’t find college particularly difficult, but I can’t say I enjoyed it either. No surprise; I never liked school. I didn’t want to go to grad school, but the economy wasn’t doing well in 1987. I got my master’s, and spent about half my career in either colleges or elementary schools. S16 applied to 2 schools (it turned out he had doubts about going to college immediately, and he should have heeded them). S18 applied to 4, and should know where he’s going once his first choice tells him if they’re coughing up enough need-based aid.
Well my DD got an acceptance to Penn State today. Also to the University Park campus and into the pre-engineering program.
But no mention of merit money, and I hear they’re not very generous. So probably not going to be her choice, as we’re OOS.
@Astro77 Wow congratulations, sending good vibes on the merit for PSU!
DD hit send on her final app tonight. She’s been deferred at her top choice, accepted EA to 3. Waiting to hear on one more EA (pesky Northeastern w/ late notification date) and 4 more RD, plus the deferral. Will be a long couple of months. But I suppose I’m glad they are done. She’s refusing to apply to a couple of LACs I’m suggesting - sticking to her guns of wanting to go to a mid-sized university (not one of her schools has “college” in the name). Not what I’d thought she’d lean toward, but she’s a stubborn one who knows what she wants – which is, basically, something the opposite of the small, rural high school she goes to now. So I give her credit for that. Now… the waiting game.
