Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Yes, one was successfully submitted but that one is the long shot one and is not needs based. Also the one with the issue is the one with the package we need to make it work. It is the one I had her do first as it was the most important one. School opens late today due to weather so my daughter will be in classes but I am going to call. So frustrating because I had callled last Friday just to confirm they had everything on the financial aid end. They did not have the CSS which I submitted 10/4. Person for that was out sick and due to holiday had to wait to Tuesday for her to call back.

Spoke with her Tuesday and was able to pull up my receipt from 10/4. She was able to pull down the CSS. Then tried to confirm with the person in admissions who oversees this application that the school had the CSS and it was linked. She was in a meeting, end of the day. Wednesday I called when I did not get a call back. Discovered later school was closed Wednesday and Thursday due to weather and does not open until 10am today.

Only slept a few hours. Feel so sick. This has been a long week of ups and downs.

@MinnieFan, I’m so sorry for all the stress.

You are doing everything you can, @MinnieFan . Hang in there.

@MinnieFan So sorry to hear about your stress. Although we haven’t had any missed deadlines my husband and I were just sharing our angst about the evolving financial pictures at schools. The school that is the best match for our daughter academically (she’s interested in Pharmacy) has accepted her with a guaranteed admissions to the PharmD. Not a dime of merit aid from them. Her SAT is exactly at the published cutoff for merit. She’s been accepted to a couple of great liberal arts programs that give merit and/or meet full need with little or no loans so the financial picture is MUCH rosier there…but the pathway to the PharmD is longer and less defined. Argh!!! If someone finds a magical source of tuition dollars please post

@MinnieFan Agree you’re doing all you can. Sending good vibes.

Oh @MinnieFan I’m so sorry, I’m just sick for you and your D. Hang in there! It sounds like you’re doing what you can. Just know that there are many of us across the country thinking of you guys and sending positive thoughts. We’re rooting for you guys!

S is still not feeling great about college since being NFW’d by Ithaca. I suspect that it may be best in the long run, since he’s never been a motivated student. The CTCL schools seem ideal for him. I get kind of a “we’ll do our best to help your unmotivated student find something that he/she likes well enough to graduate” vibe from McDaniel. He’s always liked getting into the more competitive programs, but has lacked the motivation to do well in them.

Oh @MinnieFan, we have had enough scares here that your post caused an adrenaline rush. I’m so sorry. I hope the school will be forgiving. All good vibes going out to you guys today.

I know people have said that the F in NFW stands for “financial” in the college cost context, but I prefer to think of it as the other F word…

I am breathing again!

School just called and scholarship application one has been received as well as application two. The financials are not in yet but they are behind on everything due to being closed for two days with the weather. They were very nice and said “we are here to help”. I think I found my favorite if the finances work out.

Thank you all for the encouragement and I thank the power of prayer for getting from 9pm last night to 10:30 this morning when the school called.

Positives that came from this are that my daughter is fully invested in the WHOLE process now and my husband has realized I cannot do this college parenting all alone…well I can but at a great cost to my mental health. Think my daughter will be on top of all communications now without my nagging. We as a family are really talking nuts and bolts of finances and will be doing it together.

Also positive we learned how high this school is on my daughter’s list. I still want her to keep a couple of the other acceptances in the running as we sort out finances and so forth but I know we can knock of some of the lower on the lists ones and narrow down. This way when the last letters come in March we will have our game plans in place.

Please everyone learn from us …have a system in place where the students are checking those portals and letting you know where they are. We have a goggle spread sheet for her. I put dates to check in (2 a week for top schools and those still waiting to hear from 1x a week for others). She fills the box in green when done and puts messages in the box next to it. Developed this last weekend after not getting the answers I wanted from her. She started it last night and that is how all this was discovered. I no longer have to say a word.

Also get receipts, proof, confirmation emails from all submissions.

Now that my stomach has stopped flipping I am going to try and get back to work.

Thank goodness @MinnieFan

HOORAY!!

We are in the midst of a similar panic, although the stakes are not as high. Bottom line is to make sure your child ASSUMES NOTHING. Have him/her check those portals often and thoroughly.

@MinnieFan I just saw your post for the school that caused so much issue. We applied there too. I guess I need to have DD check her portal. She hasn’t been checking them as often as I guess she should.

@MinnieFan - Just went up and down the panic room with you reading through your post. So very happy to hear it was all worked out, but I feel for all the stress the last 12 plus hours had brought you.

I agree that so many of our kids do not understand the importance of VERIFYING that all items they think were submitted were ACTUALLY submitted and RECEIVED by said schools. You can’t just assume that clicking submit and closing the window is the last thing you need to do.

My D18 much better as following up than her younger brother D21. I will have to literally be sitting next to him the entire college application journey. Heaven help both of us!!

@MinnieFan I’m so glad it worked out and yes, I hope, lesson learned. My DD is very casual about some things which makes me the uptight planner a bit crazy but she turns obstinate and stubborn when nagged or even reminded. I’ve bitten my tongue a lot and have had to remind myself that I cannot want this for her more than she wants it for herself and let her navigate. Its so hard, there is so much going on, so many deadlines etc. but she is stubborn in the whole “I got this” attitude and I have to just sit back.

Thank goodness that worked. And I will say that even with the ED acceptance in hand, I still remind DD to check deadlines. The tuition and housing deposit are due Feb. 15 but we already paid so a couple of days ago I had DD check that the money was indeed taken out of her account AND that her student portal indicates it has been paid (all school related payments are funneled through the kids’ accounts without us touching it. Otherwise there are tax ramifications, a painful lesson we learned after paying DS’s first semester on his behalf).

@2014novamom can you clarify what you’re talking about? Maybe 529 plans that weren’t paid directly to the school? None of us want adverse tax consequences! Thanks!

@SnowflakeDogMom your description describes our house until 17 hours ago. I think she gets it now and if not she knows she has no one to blame but herself and she is the one who will benefit the most or suffer the most. I will help in anyway she needs but she needs to own it from now on. I knew she got it when in her initial explanation to me between tears she said she was researching outside scholarships and would apply to everything she could. If this didn’t take 3 years off my life I would call this disaster a blessing.

@2014novamom I am curious too…as we delve into the next chapter what are the tax ramifications?

@vistajay 4 years ago my D14 was also invited to that weekend at U. Miami. It was very well done. She didn’t end up up getting that scholarship but they did increase her merit award and invite her to a special program, I don’t remember anymore what it was. With all that, she still didn’t feel it was the right fit and didn’t go there, but she still says today that if she had gotten the scholarship it would have been very hard not to go there.
