Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@labegg – Thank G*d for the SAT score auto-admit when I applied to UT-Austin back in the Stone Age! I think my class rank was 50% or so with a terrible GPA. I’m not kidding … and I was admitted into Electrical Engineering. It’s no wonder kids are nervous wrecks these days.

@labegg on online friend had a son in a highly competitive private high school. This was detrimental when it came to auto admit and her son was capped. He appealed and was admitted to UT for this fall.

I just bought DD airfare for her orientation in May.

Currently starting to plan the road trip to take her to school in August. Her older Brother and I as it doesn’t look like Dad can take off the time. We know first day of classes but need to confirm move in date.

Last fall when DD and I visited we had no idea it was also parents weekend until we arrived. We had no trouble getting a hotel but it will be on my radar as soon as I can find the date. Since Dad can’t go on road trip this summer, I know we will go to parent weekend.

DD is going to Huntsville, AL. The biggest issue is flights, as the Huntsville airport is not served by Southwest and its limited and expensive.

Nashville is 100 miles north with much better options but that involves a shuttle or a rental car.

@SnowflakeDogMom I’m a little envious thinking of your trip to Huntsville. I always wanted D to apply.

UMiami result in! My DD got in with 20k Presidential (tuition only), 17k UM Coral Grant (can be used for any expenses) and a couple of other Scholarships…so combining it with BF and the FRAG…$49k in money.

We’re very happy with the package and we still have NM and Benacquisto in play. So I am hoping that money can also be used with what the school offered since we’re still 14k away from it being covered fully. fingers crossed Anyone talk to Miami on how the Benacquisto factors into the overall Financial Aid picture? The FA office was packed when we toured.

@flsoccermom22 Excellent news! Congratulations!!!

Ok I’ll play odds games. Big changes here.
Minnesota 50%
Trinity 15%
Vanderbilt 5%
Miami Ohio 5%
The field 25%

I love seeing the odds. So interesting!

Odds here are:

Furman 34%
Centre 33%
Elon 33%

DS said last night that if he is accepted into the honors college at UK, more than 99% sure he is going to UK. So I guess those are the new odds. February 16th may be it for us then. Two more weeks.

As always the odds here are simple, 100% UTD. S was notified yesterday that he didn’t make it as a McDermott scholarship finalist, but he’s handling the rejection well and is still very much looking forward to UTD in the fall.

Yeah, are odds are 100% Syracuse! LOL. Of course the only school that didn’t give her merit. She only has one school left outstanding (Clemson) and I’m just curious at this point whether she’ll bat a thousand and if they will give her money.

Speaking of money, got the prepaid tuition contract from Syracuse yesterday. Pretty straight forward. We pay for 8 semesters tuition up front. If she withdraws we get the tuition back but without any interest (or any penalty). Any outside merit scholarships she gets that are paid directly to Syracuse will be applied to room & board and fees other than tuition. Still need to talk to our tax guy before we decide.

Still a wide-open field here. We are waiting on a few items that could easily tip things in different directions - Pitt Chancellor’s scholarship, ASU Gammage Scholarship, a visit to UCF and the passage of the Florida education bill. Looking forward to having a choice in hand & moving on to the next steps!

Still just playing the waiting game here. Waiting to hear from seven schools still. At least S18 got an interview request yesterday from one so there is something happening.

Also waiting to hear on Mines Honors Program. They said their first round of reviews would happen in late January. It’s a first come, first served thing and he got his app in about a month after he was accepted to the school itself. We’ll see.

With so many schools still in play, I can’t even begin to make a reasonable odds guess.

@2014novamom, be careful with the scholarship issue to make sure they don’t become taxable in your situation. Scholarships in excess of tuition and fees and books are taxable, as are any scholarships that are required to cover anything other than those three items. So if a scholarship is specifically designed to cover room and board, for instance, it is taxable even if the student doesn’t already have a full-tuition scholarship. In your case I don’t know how that would work with prepaid tuition, if it’s not possible for the scholarship to be applied toward tuition even though tuition isn’t covered by a scholarship. Taxable scholarships are uncommon enough that some tax pros don’t know about them and mistakenly tell families not to worry about it. There was a whole thread about it here on CC a little while ago. Several posters had otherwise trusted tax pros tell them no scholarship is taxable, which isn’t true.

Thanks for the advice @traveler98. I’ll keep that in the back of my head but frankly I think most of the scholarships my DD will get (if any) will be very small and paid directly to her to cover things like books, etc.

@2014novamom as to Clemson merit money it is based purely on stats. If you go to their NPC on the website you can plug in her numbers and it will tell you what she will get in merit money. They have three levels, $7,500 $10,000 and $15,000 based on various levels of stats.

Odds based on expected admissions decisions

Clemson 65%
Udel30%
The field of Princeton,Vanderbilt and Brown 5%

If she was accepted to all the odds would be

Vandy 40%
Clemson 30%
Brown 30%

Princeton and Deleware 0%

I wish I could play the odds, but 1) my son either really doesn’t know his preferences or
Is keeping his cards very close to his chest, 2) we are waiting on merit info from one school and admissions/merit info from quite a few others, and 3) we will visit 3-5 schools over Spring Break. Big $ would be a thumb on the scales, but I don’t expect any more to be forthcoming.

Hmmm, D is waiting on 13 schools. Of those, only five are acceptable without big merit, all reaches.

Long, long wait until the end of March.
